It seems all but official as Alex Smith's time in San Francisco is up.
Sources are telling ESPN that San Francisco has agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. In return, San Francisco will get KC's 2nd round draft pick in the 2013 draft (34th overall pick) and a conditional mid-round pick in the 2014 draft. This effectively ends the former #1 pick's tenure with the 49ers leaving a mixed legacy behind.
Eight years in San Francisco over. It's been an interesting time with Alex leading the offense. He was the #1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft and would forever be remembered as being picked before Aaron Rodgers. Smith never really had any luck in his first 6 seasons being plagued with injuries and different offensive coordinators year after year. Jim Harbaugh brought some stability to the 49ers in 2011 and helped Alex's game along with the offense. In those two years as a starter under Jim Harbaugh, Smith was 19-5-1 before losing his job to backup Colin Kaepernick after Smith sustained a concussion in the middle of the 2012 season.
Smith now heads to Kansas City where he and Andy Reid are looking for fresh starts. While Smith is no star college QB coming in the draft, he certainly can bring some stability to the offense if put in the right system. Reid, however, doesn't typically run the style of offense found in San Francisco. He's a very pass happy guy and Alex might not be the quarterback for him. Maybe Smith's college stats say differently but the pro stats says he's not suited for that.
While I would've liked Alex to go somewhere else, I honestly wish him the best and hope he has a fruitful career in Kansas City. That being said, the Chiefs are definitely not going to the postseason next year.
P.S. Alex might be the best option among available quarterbacks at this time but he won't likely be the savior for the Chiefs. I hope to be wrong.

No More Head Coach Vacancies in the NFL
Two more head coaches were hired in order to fill every vacancy in the league.
First, defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, Gus Bradley, is hired to be the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bradley is the only coach of all hired this off season to be from the defensive side of the ball. Bradley managed to mold the Seahawks into arguably the best defense in the NFL. They ranked first in points allowed in 2012 allowing 15.3 points per game. He now takes over a Jaguars team which is tied for 29th in points allowed, 30th in overall defense, and had a 2-14 record. At least he gets the 2nd pick in the NFL Draft to work with.
The 2nd and final vacancy of this off season was filled by Bruce Arians as he goes to the Arizona Cardinals. Arians was the offensive coordinator for the Colts and the interim head coach for most of 2012 due to Chuck Pagano's leukemia. He now takes over a 5-11 Cardinals team which was dead last in total offense and 2nd to last in points scored. He might have Kevin Kolb but they have a lot of work to do.
Hiring season for head coaches being over seems a bit disappointing what with the fact that Lovie Smith didn't get another head coaching job in the NFL. A lot of unproven NFL head coaches in the bunch with the notable exception being Andy Reid. Which of these new coaches will shine brightest in 2013?

Reid Goes to the Chiefs
The money was on Arizona and yet it turned up Kansas City.
After being let go by the Eagles on Monday, Andy Reid has reached on agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs to become their next head coach. It took a bit to sort out the details of the contract and to fire Scott Pioli as GM so that Andy Reid could have his own guy in there but the deal got done. Reid's unemployment didn't last long as he now has the task of turning around the worst team in the league. He has the entire off season and the #1 pick in the draft to work with.
Looks like Andy Reid knows where to go. The AFC West is easier to navigate than the NFC West making Kansas City truly the more luring option. Sure, Reid has to turnaround the Chiefs coming off one of their worst seasons ever but he managed to turn around the Eagles when he first took over that team. More likely than not, next year will be seen as an improved year anyway.
As for the Cardinals, have you tried petitioning to move into another division?

Andy's Choice... So Easy (Yet Please Reconsider)
Andy Reid gone from the Eagles means that a team will scoop him up and hire him as their next head coach. The two most likely destinations at this point for Reid is either Arizona or Kansas City. Reid will likely choose a spot very soon... hopefully not too soon as for no one to be interested in this post. Both KC and Arizona have just fired head coaches themselves with the Chiefs letting Romeo Crennel go while the Cardinals dumped Ken Whisenhunt.
Where would Andy Reid be most comfortable? It would be very tempting to say Arizona but I could make a good argument for Kansas City instead. It really has to do with strength of the division (and possibly the conference). Arizona might be alluring with Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald but you have to think about how strong the NFC West is right now and how strong it will stay for the foreseeable future. With young guns of Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson being the competing QB's along with great defenses behind them, how well do you think the Cardinals are suited for all of that? Andy knows the ins and outs of a strong division and how uncertain it can be.
So why not Kansas City and the AFC West instead? While Peyton Manning and the Broncos might be kings there now, age catches up to everyone and who's to say how long Manning can delay father time's arrival? You also have to look at the fact that the AFC West has no strong #2 team. The Chargers have the next best record in that division at 7-9 and while there is uncertainty to how well Philip Rivers can play under a new coach, you have to think without viable targets to throw to his career might be in decline.
Despite my attempts to try and sway Andy Reid, he will probably end up in Arizona. The Cardinals are more suited to passing the ball as opposed to the Chiefs who are currently built more for the run at the moment. Kansas City might have the #1 pick in the draft but it's a year too late for maximum value. Seeing the QB class lacking in the draft, Reid will likely choose the Cardinals over the Chiefs.

It's Coach Season (Not Duck Season)
Looks like some owners are starting their New Year's resolutions a bit before the ball drops.
The 2012 regular season has ended which means that it's time for some firings across the NFL. The most notable one is Andy Reid being fired by the Eagles after 14 years as their head coach. Philadelphia set the bar high for Andy Reid this year but the Eagles could not come close to reaching it. They went 4-12 (which is worse than 8-8), struggled to win the games they had won, and were certainly way off of making the postseason. Reid lead the Eagles to 5 NFC title games and one Super Bowl appearance but the team has noticeably dropped off the last couple of years and that cost him his job.
Another big firing was Norv Turner of the Chargers along with GM A.J. Smith. This firing came 6 years too late as Turner should never been hired nor should anyone have replaced Marty Schottenheimer. The Chargers failed to make the playoffs each of the last 3 years and San Diego is glad to see him leave.
Perhaps the biggest surprise firing was Lovie Smith. The Chicago Bears fired him after a 10-6 season in which they were just short of making the playoffs. Looks like that last second field goal that Adrian Peterson help set up for the Vikes cost Smith some Love. Smith was 81-63 as the Bears head coach and did manage to get the Bears to a Super Bowl a while back but failing the make the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row cost him big especially considering the team started the season out 7-1.
As for other notable moves, Arizona fires Ken Whisenhunt after a disastrous 5-11 season. Three straight years of failing to make the playoffs along with the trying to find Kurt Warner's replacement has now lead to finding a replacement for Whisenhunt. The Kansas City Chiefs fired Romeo Crennel after one season in which the team went 2-14. They keep GM Scott Pioli but are looking for a new head coach. General Manager of the New York Jets Mike Tannenbaum has been fired but Rex Ryan will remain as head coach. Pity the owner Woody Johnson hasn't realized yet that no Ryan can be a successful head coach in the NFL. Last one I'll mention is that GM Gene Smith of the Jaguars has been fired. Coach Mike Mularky could be next but it's clear that the new owner Shad Khan wants a new direction for this team. Could that be with Tim Tebow?
So many firings today on this Black Monday that I can't but help but wonder where some of these fired coaches will end up. Andy Reid will likely get a job somewhere but it isn't a sure thing. Romeo Crennel will probably go back to being a coordinator for some other NFL team. As for the others, we'll see.

Nick Foles to Start for Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles this year have been horrible for the most part just being lucky for the first few weeks and just plain bad following that. Counting the game against the Cowboys yesterday, they have lost 5 games in a row. While Michael Vick hasn't played as well as he should be playing, it's not all his fault or even the main reason why that offense is so terrible. The offensive line can't protect the QB to save their lives, more importantly Vick's life.
Over the season, Vick has taken shot after shot after shot and yesterday his head had enough when he had to leave the game with a concussion. Nick Foles came in and did alright for a rookie QB. He managed to throw a TD but also threw an interception that was returned for a TD. He went 22/32 for 219 yards as the Cowboys ended up blowing them out in the fourth quarter. Final score: 38-23.
The fact is that the Eagles at 3-6 are out of the playoff hunt and have to start thinking about the future. That being said, the one place they are going to look at is of course Quarterback. With Michael Vick out with a concussion as of now, the opportune moment to start rehearsals for the role has presented itself. Nick Foles will get a fair shake at the job as he has been the named the starting QB for Sunday's game vs. the Redskins. He will get time with the first team this week and show us what he's got this weekend.
As for when Andy Reid's job will be up for grabs, I can see rehearsals for that role just around the corner.

Eagles Keep Diving with Loss to Saints
The Philadelphia Eagles went into New Orleans this week with a lot of questions around them from whether or not Micahel Vick will be the starting QB to whether or not the outcome of this game will affect Andy Reid's job as head coach of the team. To make the questions go away for the time being, they needed a win.
The Eagles played the Saints in the Superdome who were themselves looking to rebound from a disastrous start to a strange season that had players and coaches of theirs suspended. They needed a win as well to get a chance of making something out of a lost season. Vick helped them get started right away throwing a 99 yard interception returned for a TD by Patrick Robinson. The Saints would get two more TDs before the half.
The Eagles managed to get the 2nd half started right with a 77 yard TD pass to DeSean Jackson after a turnover committed by Drew Brees via a fumble. The Eagles would then score a FG after a Saints fumble on the kickoff return. Brees would get the Saints to strike back late in the 3rd quarter with a 6 yard TD pass to Jimmy Graham. That gave them a 15 point lead that would not change for the rest of the game. The Eagles could not do anything else but fumble the ball in the 4th quarter. Saints win it 28-13 leaving both team 3-5 but heading in different directions.
The Eagles have 477 total yards of offense and get only 13 points. They had 5 red zone trips that resulted in no TDs. Meanwhile, the Saints and their struggling defense manage to get a big win at home as they get ready for the Falcons on Sunday. As for the Eagles, looks like more questions.

Andy Reid Fires Juan Castillo
Did Juan Castillo suddenly turn into a goat?
The Eagles this season have been a .500 team that look like a disappointment. Michael Vick has been sloppy, the offense is under-producing, the fans have become agitated, and the owner hasn't made it a secret that this must be a playoff season for Andy Reid and the Eagles. There's a lot of pressure on this team none of this is helping them. They just lost a game to the Lions in which they were ahead by ten points in the 4th quarter. A change has to be made... at defensive coordinator.
Eagles head coach Andy Reid fired Juan Castillo and put Todd Bowles, the teams secondary coach, in charge of the defense. Castillo spent most of his time in Philly as the offensive line coach until he was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2011. Since the move, the Eagles have never quite been the same basically being a .500 team since then with the inability of blocking for Michael Vick.
I'll never quite understand this move of firing Castillo or even promoting him in the first place. It seems like a weird transition from offense to defense like that. Even so, it seemed to be working to a degree. The only reason that the Eagles are 3-3 is the defense for the most part. The offense has looked awful with Michael Vick turning it over routinely. The Eagles have a turnover differential of -9 with the Chiefs being the one worse team in the NFL with -15. The Eagles right now are also the 2nd worst points per game team averaging 17.2 points a game. The only team that is worse are the Jacksonville Jaguars with 13 a game. If anything needed changing, it was the offense in one way or another.
