Sorry I have written for a few days. I had an imaginary ailment that needed checking out.
The Australian open just concluded with some great winners and some controversy. First, Novak Djokovic proves he's still the #1 player in the world when he beat Andy Murray in four sets 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-2. It's the fourth time that Djokovic has won it down under and his 6th overall Grand Slam title.
Andy Murray shouldn't feel too bad, however. He managed to beat Roger Federer for the first time in a Grand Slam event to get to the finals. That has to mean something.
As for the women's side, there was some controversy surrounding Victoria Azarenka who managed to beat Li Na in the final in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to claim her first Grand Slam title. In the semi-final round to get there, she stalled for ten minutes with an "injury" after Sloane Stephens managed to rally a bit to survive 5 match points by way of Azarenka's serve. Victoria killed the momentum gained by Stephens and came back and finished her off with ease in the next game effectively ending the match 6-1, 6-4.
Azarenka seems to have stretched the rules at best when she beat Stephens and the crowd didn't like her for it as there were signs of disgust in the women's final. Hopefully the rules are fixed so that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.
Congrats to Djokovic on winning another Grand Slam title. As for Azarenka, nice hair.

Andy Murray Wins First Career Grand Slam Title at US Open
Andy Murray has had a roller coaster summer with a loss at the Wimbledon final and then a win at the Olympic final to claim gold while going through both of those on the same court. The gold was a consolation prize at best but he would have another opportunity to win big.
As the summer closes, so too does the US Open and any interest in Tennis for the remainder of the year. With Rafael Nadal out due to injury and Roger Federer getting bumped off early, Andy Murray had a slightly better chance of winning the tournament. So did his opponent in the final, Novak Djokovic. It was a grueling final between these two as it lasted 4 hours and 54 minutes. The momentum was shifting towards Novak but somehow Murray was able to hang on. Andy Murray would win the match 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 and claim his first Grand Slam title.
An historic win for Andy Murray if not for personal reasons but for country. The 25 year old Murray is the first British man since 1936 to win a Grand Slam title in singles competition. The U.K. has put the weight of their tennis tradition on Murray and he can finally take a lot of that off. Murray has been to a Grand Slam final four times before this and it was all for nothing until now. Andy Murray said afterwords "Relief is probably the best word I would use to describe how I'm feeling just now... You do think: Is it ever going to happen?"
Well it finally did happen and congratulations to Andy Murray on finally claiming a Grand Slam. Nice way to finish the year.

Andy Murray Wins Gold for Great Britain
About a month ago, Andy Murray failed to win Wimbeldon as Roger Federer claimed his 17th Grand Slam title. It was the 4th final that Murray had lost and this one most likely hurt the most considering it was Wimbledon. Murray, however, would get some redemption.
The Olympics have tennis (duh) and Andy Murray wasn't going to let Great Britain down. He managed to play his way to the final where he was set up to play (well, what do you know) Roger Federer. Now Federer was looking to complete the Career Golden Slam in this final which would be the cherry on top of the icing on the cake the size of the Alps. Andy Murray, however, was ready to take the cherry away. Murray was strong from the beginning and just didn't give the Fed a chance. Murray won the match 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and takes the Gold Medal in tennis.
Murray does get a win on the Olympic stage and does it for Great Britain. It's wonderful to get a gold medal in any event, even in Tennis. It's ironic he won it on the same court he lost on less than a month ago. Would he have liked to have won Wimbledon? Sure he would have. But to me there is nothing like getting a gold medal and to be able to look back at your life and say that I was a gold medal Olympian... Nah, still not better than a Grand Slam title. I tried, Murray.
