Rafael proved once again he rules Roland Garros by beating fellow Spanish countryman David Ferrer in three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. This is Nadal's 8th French title making him the only player in Tennis history to have that many titles at one Grand Slam event. Overall, Nadal now has 12 Grand Slam titles.
As for the Women's side, Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. It's Serena's 16th overall Grand Slam title and her 2nd at the French. Her first French title was over ten years ago in 2002.
A good couple of weeks of tennis as Wimbledon is just around the corner. Time to shop for some boring white clothes.

Andy Murray Wins First Career Grand Slam Title at US Open
Andy Murray has had a roller coaster summer with a loss at the Wimbledon final and then a win at the Olympic final to claim gold while going through both of those on the same court. The gold was a consolation prize at best but he would have another opportunity to win big.
As the summer closes, so too does the US Open and any interest in Tennis for the remainder of the year. With Rafael Nadal out due to injury and Roger Federer getting bumped off early, Andy Murray had a slightly better chance of winning the tournament. So did his opponent in the final, Novak Djokovic. It was a grueling final between these two as it lasted 4 hours and 54 minutes. The momentum was shifting towards Novak but somehow Murray was able to hang on. Andy Murray would win the match 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 and claim his first Grand Slam title.
An historic win for Andy Murray if not for personal reasons but for country. The 25 year old Murray is the first British man since 1936 to win a Grand Slam title in singles competition. The U.K. has put the weight of their tennis tradition on Murray and he can finally take a lot of that off. Murray has been to a Grand Slam final four times before this and it was all for nothing until now. Andy Murray said afterwords "Relief is probably the best word I would use to describe how I'm feeling just now... You do think: Is it ever going to happen?"
Well it finally did happen and congratulations to Andy Murray on finally claiming a Grand Slam. Nice way to finish the year.

Andy Roddick to Retire. WHO CARES!!!
Serena Williams and that's about it.
Andy Roddick announced that he will retire after the US Open. His next (and hopefully final match) will be tonight against Bernard Tomic of Australia. Roddick has had a good career by most standards in tennis as he had won a Grand Slam back in 2003 which was the US Open and nearly had another a couple years ago. He has also managed to remain relevant since 2003 until now as he has been out of the top ten for quite some time.
Okay, why do we follow this guy again? Andy Roddick has been a blimp in the radar ever since Roger Federer started dominate the sport followed by Rafael Nadal with Novak Djokovic now trying to start his own reign of greatness. The only thing that Andy Murray has been known for is that awesome serve that he has and that's it. A great serve will only get you so far.
What was annoying to me not Roddick himself who seems OK but the US media always focusing on him as the face of US men's tennis. I know people are more likely to watch something if they have the same nationality but it just seemed overdone in this case. Andy Roddick is (and soon was) a fine player but he wasn't good enough to excite casual American sports fans.
I don't care about nationality that much in Tennis and was always fine watching Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer go at it. While the match ups at time were boring to see over and over again, at least they warranted the attention. While Roddick has had success in mostly minor tournaments, he just hasn't done anything to actual earn the attention on the main stage other than being the best American male tennis player.
