The one question that would've lingered this whole season for the Giants was could they re-sign Matt Cain for the foreseeable future? Matt Cain is an important part of the rotation and key member of the team that needed to stay for the Giants to contend for the future. The Giants knew it and acted on it. They and Matt Cain came to an agreement that will keep him in San Francisco for quite some time. Cain gets a 6 year, $127 million extension with the team. He also has a player option for 2018.
A big move for the Giants to keep one of their stars. I was worried that Cain wasn't going to come back and be tempted to test free agency. The Giants, however, made him the highest paid right handed pitcher in history. Now if only we could get rid of the biggest lefty bust in history. This huge amount of money will definitely affect their future dealings with Tim Lincecum when they start talking about re-signing him sometime next year. Of course Timmy doesn't become a free agent until the end of the 2013 season.
Good luck to the Giants. Season starts Friday for them and they seem off to a good start.
