The last games of the group stage have begun and who will get a red rose? Okay, it's not the Bachelor. This is actually exciting. Group A finished their games today with two games happening at the same time with South Africa vs. France and Uruguay vs. Mexico. South Africa needed to score some major goals to catch up to Mexico and was on the way to doing that leading 2-0. But, despite being down a man due to a red card, France would score a goal to make it 2-1 and dash South Africa's hopes in this game. Uruguay, meanwhile, would beat Mexico and take the top spot in the group with 7 points. Mexico would advance to the next round as well despite losing this game.
South Africa and France have the displeasure of going home which is only a few blocks away for South Africa. It is sad to see both of these team already out of the World Cup. South Africa becomes the first host nation in World Cup history to be eliminated from it in the Group Stage. Not exactly the goal of Bafana Bafana. The laughable French, meanwhile, go home after so much controversy with their team: the team hating their coach, rumors of players quitting, qualifying for the World Cup because of hand ball. They actually finished last in the group. It might as well been the Irish. Truly a moment of pure shame for France.
