Djokovic Wins Second Australian Open Title

The Men's Final of the Australian Open occurred earlier today with Novak Djokovic v. Andy Murray. Murray was looking for his first Grand Slam Title and had improved his game considerably over the years. However, you wouldn't know it at all if you had watched this match. Djokovic would beat Murray in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, and win his 2nd Australian Open Title. Murray looked sloppy throughout the Match and Djokovic took advantage of that. Murray has now lost 3 Grand Slam Open finals in his career. He can get to the final round but just can't close the deal.

Congrats to Djokovic and also Kim Clijsters on their wins. Perhaps these two will make bigger waves in the 3 other Grand Slams latter this year.

Clijsters Wins First Australian Open Title

The Women's Final of the Australian Open was earlier today as Kim Clijsters faced Li Na. It was a good match to watch for a Women's final as Li Na would take the opening set. Clijsters would not be deterred, however, and managed to grab some momentum to win the next two sets. Clijsters won the match (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and her first Australian Open Title. In a career perspective, this was Clijsters 4th Grand Slam title. I wanted Li Na to win and become the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam but China will have to wait a bit longer. Congrats to Kim and her first win down under. At least a first of some kind.

P.S. The Men's Final is tomorrow with Andy Murray going against Novak Djokovic.

A Parting of Ways in Tennessee

Don't give up hope yet perspective coaches that want a head coaching gig in the NFL. A late decision has been made within the Tennessee Titans organization. The Titans and Jeff Fisher have decided "to part ways" after 16 years together. Fisher has done so much for that franchise and even got them to a Super Bowl just over ten years ago. They've had some good years and some bad years but Fisher seemed to always be able to present a worthy team of a playoff run year after year. Fisher was the longest tenured head coach in the league going back to 1994 when the team was still known as the Houston Oilers.

Fisher will likely take a media job for the next year and then sign with a team next season. As for the Titans themselves, I'm not sure who they will get. Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher seem comfy where they are so they're out. Maybe Tom Cable is a possibility? It seems likely it will be someone looking for their first head coaching job.

P.S. Bud Adams right now reminds me of a parent who is mad at both of his kids for fighting and then punishes them both. Wait... will Bud now consider keeping Vince Young?

Federer Out of Australian Open Too

Rafael Nadal gets eliminated one day, Roger Federer the next. Federer had his Semifinals match against Novak Djokovic and also appeared off. Maybe Roger and Rafa enjoyed the off season too much. Anyway, Federer was beaten by Djokovic in straight sets 7-6, 7-5, 6-4. This is monumental as neither Rafa or Federer will appear in the Australian Open final. This will be only the second time since 2005 that either player did not appear in a Grand Slam final. Federer seems to be getting too old while Rafa struggled and may have injured himself late in his last match. I kind of like the instability while Tennis promoters are probably stunned a bit now considering that their big money makers are both out.

Novak Djokovic is in the final round and now waits to see if he will face Andy Murray or David Ferrer.

No Rafa Slam

Rafael Nadal entered the 2011 Australian Open with the intent of winning his 4th straight Grand Slam Title. He seemed to be doing pretty well until he faced David Ferrer. Nadal seemed to have struggled against Ferrer throughout the whole match. He already lost the first 2 sets and took a medical timeout in the middle of the third. Rafael Nadal would lose that set and the match 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Ferrer moves on to the Semifinals while Rafa is headed home with a possible injury. Rafa seemed to be off his game and it cost him the tournament. Roger Federer now seems like the odds favorite.

The Final Four of the Australian Open is set: Novak Djokovic will face Roger Federer while David Ferrer goes against Andy Murray.

Hello Again Mr. Johnson

After a terrible season for the Cincinnati Bengals, Chad Ochocinco is making a big change; he is changing his name back to Chad Johnson after three years as Chad Ochocinco. The Ochocinco name started when he put the name on the back of his jersey years ago as part of a gag. The "Gag" is officially over, though. Why now? Chad has said he is not sure where he will end up next year and he wants to have a fresh start no matter what.

Perhaps Mr. Ochocinco has matured enough to want to help his team more than himself and as a sign of that he is changing his name back. Admirable but I'm still disappointed. I kind of like the name change stunt. I didn't like the name "Ochocinco" but I did like that it attacked the names on the back of jerseys. Why not be able to put what you want on the back of a jersey provided it's not offensive? Footballers in Europe are allowed to put something else on their jerseys besides their surnames. Still, it's a different sport with a different set of rules and customs. It's also much more diverse which allows for that kind of name leeway.

Sad to see the longest running gag come to a close but it had to end sometime. Could you imagine having the name "Ochocinco" if you go into broadcasting?

Did Jay Cutler Give Up?

Bears fans are none too happy that their season ended one game short of the Super Bowl, especially considering that it came at the hands of their long time rivals, the Green Bay Packers. Like with most big loses in any sport, frustration is being shown by many of the fans and critics. It seems that the frustration is being thrown at Jay Cutler, the QB of the Bears. Cutler had to leave the game because of a sprained MCL. He tried to play in the 2nd half but only played one series and came out. Todd Collins came in and tried to make the comeback but struggled leaving it to the third string QB, Caleb Hanie. While Hanie did make a difference, he still fell short and lost the game. The actual controversy is that many are saying that Cutler could've stayed in the game with that injury and that he just quit on the team.

It seems a little unfair to criticize someone for being hurt. True, many players in all sports try to play through the pain and sometimes can but the fact is that there are many injuries that you just can't play with. Perhaps Cutler felt he was less effective with this injury (not that he was really any good that night). I will concede that Cutler could've helped more on the sidelines but other than that, there was nothing he could do.

Now even if Cutler did give up (which I don't think happened), I don't think it was him trying to hurt his team but trying to help them. Now hear me out. He was already having a bad night throwing under 50%, only 80 yards, and 1 INT. Him being injured and not getting any better, he may have figured it would've done no good with him staying in the ball game so he left. Hanie did do all right and might've done better if he was the 2nd string QB instead of the 3rd (would've been in for a bit longer).

Who knows what was going on in Jay Cutler's head. Quite honestly, it seems like he was injured enough to come out of the ball game. It's the NFC Championship for heaven's sake. Whether you are behind or not, you keep going.

Packers and Steelers Are Going to Dallas

The NFC and AFC Title Games were played today with the winners set to face each other in the Super Bowl in two weeks. The NFC game featured a grudge match between the Packers vs. the Bears in Chicago. Aaron Rodgers was not good for most of the game throwing for 244 yards and 2 INTs. His only TD came in the first quarter by running the ball in. The Packers defense was the story of the day along with the ineffectiveness of the Bears offense. The Bears actually did a bit better when Caleb Hanie went into the game in place of injured Jay Cutler and struggling Todd Collins. But it wasn't enough as a late INT by Sam Shields sealed the victory for Green Bay. Packers defeat their long time rivals, 21-14, and advance to their 5th Super Bowl of all time.

But who will be their opponent in Dallas? The Jets and Steelers settled that debate in the AFC Title game. The Jets started slow and couldn't get any offense going in the first half. A big reason for that was the Steelers hogging the ball with their ground game. The Steelers ran for 166 yards with Rashard Mendenhall leading the way with 121 yards and 1 TD. Meanwhile, the Jets only ran it for 70 yards. The Jets would get going in the second half but would fall short as the Steelers win, 24-19, and advance to their 3rd Super Bowl in 6 years. The "Soon to be Champs" (Jets) are eliminated in the AFC Title game for a second year in a row.

The match up in Dallas is set: The Green Bay Packers will face the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Lombardi Trophy. It's fitting in a way as two of the most successful football teams of all time will now square off in the Super Bowl. The Packers have the most league titles with 12 (3 of those being Super Bowl wins) while the Steelers have the most Super Bowl titles with 6. Its hard to say who the most successful team of all time is considering each franchise has a good case for that title. Either way, it's the first time that these two teams are playing against each other in the Super Bowl. Perhaps the debate of "most successful" will be settled in this game.

P.S. As for who will win it, I'm going with my original pick Super Bowl pick: the Green Bay Packers. I just jinxed it, didn't I?

Okay, What I Miss?

My vacation is over (finally) and I'm back to complaining (with some reporting) about the sports world once again. Some notable things have happened as soon as I left: the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs came and went. I was actually right about 3 of the 4 games with the wrong pick being the Patriots over the Jets. Got to give credit to Jets. They now go on to their 2nd straight AFC Title game with this one vs. the Steelers. Tomorrow the love will be over and the hits to see who will play in the Super Bowl will begin. My pick goes to the Steelers. They want some revenge from their lost to the Jets just a few weeks ago and I think they will get it.

As for the NFC Title Game, it's the oldest rivalry in the NFL: the Packers vs. the Bears. They split the season series earlier this year and will have their grudge match in Chicago. Despite getting to the NFC Title Game, people are still doubting the Bears. They did only beat the Seahawks but the Seahawks in turn had just beaten the Super Bowl Champs, the New Orleans Saints. Hard pick here but I will have to choose the Bears. It may make more sense to pick the Packers in many ways but the Bears seem more balanced and ready to go.

Other newsworthy items are Hue Jackson officially becoming the Raiders head coach. Still would've been better to keep Tom Cable but at least I'm not a Raiders fan. Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon reunite as teammates agreeing to play for the Rays. It will not be enough for the Rays, however, as both Damon and Manny are aging and they have lost too many players in the off season. And lastly I still don't care about the NBA. I just don't.

Divisional Weekend is Here

Big games in the divisional round of the playoffs start today with the Ravens and Steelers and the Packers and Falcons. Ravens and Steelers have always proved to be hard hitting games with bruises for everyone. If I had to pick, Steelers have the edge with more experience but watch out for Joe Flacco. He's close to showing his full potential and might just show his maturity today. As for the Packers and Falcons, I pick Aaron Rodgers, I mean the Packers. Playing once in Atlanta this year gave them a feel of what to expect and that running game shown last week is something new and may work against Atlanta.

As for Sunday's games, the still under .500 Seahawks take on the Bears. The Bears lost to the Seahawks earlier this season but have a new look offense now that will leave the Seahawks scratching their heads. Fool them once, shame on you; Fool them twice, they won't. I pick Chicago for the win. 2nd Sunday game is the grudge match in Foxborough between the Jets and the Patriots. They played twice and each won a game. The Patriots won that second game with a different offensive plan than the first but Rex Ryan will be more prepared. He managed to change his defensive plan for Peyton Manning and he will try to do the same for Tom Brady. I still expect the Patriots to win, though. They have Bill Belichick as their mastermind as opposed to the unproven Colts head coach, Jim Caldwell.

These are my best guests for this weekend's match ups. Enjoy the hits.

P.S. I may not be able to post for roughly a week. Vacation time for me. With that being said, I want to comment on next week for you now: I am astounded with , saddened by , and happy for . You fill in the blanks yourself.

Broncos Hire the Fox

John Fox was recently known as the head coach of the Panthers from 2002 to 2010. Not many people remember that he actually led the team to a Super Bowl in just his second season as a head coach. Unfortunately for him, he faced the Pats and lost by 3. Fox has tried to get back since then but hasn't been able to. The Panthers just let him go after his contract expired with the franchise especially after just getting 2 wins this season. John Fox did not stay unemployed for long, however. The Broncos have hired him as their new head coach. He will now try and rebuild the Broncos instead of the Panthers.

A very interesting situation for him in Denver. He has 3 different QB's to chose from: Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow, and Brady Quinn. The starter will likely be either Orton or Tebow depending on who impresses Fox more. There is a lot more to look at, though, than just QB. The team was 26th in rushing this season and were last in defense. Fox will probably look at defensive players for his #2 pick in the draft rather than improve the offense.

Good luck to John Fox and the Broncos this off season. They need a major overhaul.

P.S. Here's a good question: Who will get back to the playoffs first, Carolina or Denver?

L.T. Pleas Guilty But No Jail Time

Again, not LaDanian Tomlinson but Lawrence Taylor. The Original L.T.

Taylor was charged back in May of 2010 with sex crimes that revolved around a 16 year old prostitute. That story came to a close yesterday. Taylor pled guilty to soliciting a prostitute and a second count of having sex with a women without her consent (16 year olds can't consent). In exchange, Taylor got no jail time, 6 years probation, and must register as a sex offender. He also paid a $1,300 fine. That's it? I thought we where going to have a juicy trial with every little detail coming out. Instead, there is a measly plea that has no jail time. Will any sex offender that is a athlete ever go to jail? True Taylor said that she was 19 (which means nothing legally) but that's what every person accused of statutory rape says (according to Law and Order: SVU).

Either way, at least he's registered. Better than nothing I guess.

P.S. They almost had him locked up but he had a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.

Cam Newton to Enter the NFL Draft

Cam seems to have already achieved everything he can achieve in college football; he won a National title for Auburn and won the Heisman Trophy. Newton then probably asked himself "What's there left to do in college?" The answer is simple: nothing. With that said, Cameron Newton has declared that he will enter the NFL Draft rather than return to Auburn for his senior year. It seemed like this move was inevitable considering his great performance this year and also the controversy surrounding the pay-for-play accusations.

So where will Cameron Newton go in the NFL Draft? While he is the Heisman winner, he's often compared to Tim Tebow as a non-traditional QB. Because of this, the top picks will most likely pass him by thinking he will not succeed in the NFL. If I had to pick where he would go, I think he would be the 15th pick in the draft and go to the Miami Dolphins. They've had QB woes since Dan Marino left in 1999 and Cameron Newton can be a big boost to them considering they have been known to use a few more trick plays and Wildcat plays than most other teams. Of course this is speculation and Newton (or Tebow) could eventually end up as a traditional QB but for now he will be considered a risky first round pick.

P.S. I would love to have Cameron Newton on the 49ers just because his name isn't Alex Smith but Jim Harbaugh runs a Pro Style offense and has no need for someone like Newton.

Hoke Goes to Michigan and Rivera Gets First Head Coaching Job

Some coaching hires happened in the last day or so. Michigan has found a new head coach to replace Rich Rod and it's not Les Miles who they tried to hire for a 2nd time. Its Brady Hoke who was recently the head coach for San Diego State. While he is not really a Michigan man per say, he was a coach there from 1995-2002. He has some noteworthy seasons as head coach of other teams including the 2008 Ball State Cardinals who were 12-1 (under his control) and this last season with San Diego State going 9-4. Hopefully Hoke is the guy they are looking for to turn that program around.

As for the NFL, the Carolina Panthers have found a new head coach and his name is Ron Rivera. He was recently the defensive coordinator for the Chargers and has been a coach in the NFL since 1997. He was actually a linebacker for the Bears from 1984-1992 including the 85 Bears that won the Super Bowl. Rivera had tried to get head coaching jobs before but has fallen short. This job with Carolina will be his first one. Hopefully he will make the best of the opportunity and somehow rebuild this struggling franchise. Good luck dude.

More coaches moving from one place to another. The only head coaching vacancies I can see left in the NFL are Cleveland and Oakland that's if Eric Studesville stays on as the Broncos head coach. If not, that's 3 spots to fill. Looks like Gruden and Cowher are staying in the media for another year.

Trevor Hoffman Closes His Career

Besides the great and intimidating Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman has been the top closer in baseball. I say "has been" because Hoffman has just retired from the game after 18 seasons in the Majors. Hoffman was primarily known for being the closer of the Padres from 1993-2008. For the last two seasons, he was the closer for the Milwaukee Brewers. Although Hoffman wasn't exactly considered the best closer because of Rivera's performances in the postseason, he was the most accomplished in MLB history with 601 saves. Although Rivera is just 42 saves behind him, Hoffman still will be remembered for this this amount. He has been clutch for so long but no more.

Hoffman won't be staying away from the game, though. He is going back to the Padres for some type of front office role. Looks like this future Hall of Famer still wants to be part of this game.

Auburn Wins the Illegitimate National Title

Okay, I have been critical of this game every year, especially with the fact of the controversy around with Cam Newton and the NCAA. But I will try and work through my bias opinion on this whole situation until the end of this post.

The BCS National Title Game was played last night between the Auburn Tigers and the Oregon Ducks. Much attention was given to these two offensive powerhouses leading up to this game but it seemed a defensive volley all around. Auburn once again depended on Cam Newton to lead the way and he did just that with 265 passing yards, 64 rushing yards, and 2 passing TDs. The Tigers had the lead 19-11 for the longest time and looked like the game was going to end with that score until the Ducks finally managed to tie it with a huge TD pass to LaMichael James from Darron Thomas and then a successful 2 point conversion. There was 2:33 left on the clock which gave Auburn enough time for one final drive. They went all the way inside the one yard line and kicked the game winning field goal by Wes Byrum as time expired. Tigers win, 22-19, and claim their first National Title since 1957.

It has been quite a year for Auburn and quite college career for Cam Newton. He won a National Title last year on the JC level and has another one now at the top level that greedy, should-be-ineligible-if-not-for-the-greedier-NCAA bastard. Sigh. Almost made it to the end.

P.S. And Yes, it is still the Illegitimate National Title. WE WANT PLAYOFFS!!!

Ravens Pick Apart Chiefs and Packers Hold Off Eagles

The Wild Card round of the playoffs finished today with the first game featuring the Ravens vs. the Chiefs. It looked like it was going to be a close game throughout as it was 10-7 at half time. The Ravens, though, would take control of the second half and ended up destroying the Chiefs, 30-7. The Chiefs QB, Matt Cassel, threw for just 70 yards, 3 INTs, and no TDs in the loss as the Ravens had the ball for over 40 minutes. Joe Flacco threw for 265 yards and 2 TDs. The Ravens go on and will face their AFC North Rivals, the Steelers, next week.

The 2nd game had the Packers going into Philly facing the Eagles. The Packers had control of this game throughout with Aaron Rodgers throwing for 180 yards and 3 TDs. The key for the Packers, however, was James Starks who carried the team on the ground for 123 yards. Vick and the Eagles look like they were going to comeback to win this game but Michael Vick threw an INT to Tramon Williams about a half minute to go. Packers win, 21-16. A horrible way for Michael Vick to end his magnificent season. The Packers will face the Falcons in Atlanta next week.

The Wild Card round is over as the bye teams now come into play. In addition to the two games mentioned earlier, the Jets will have a grudge match against the Patriots and the Seahawks will travel to Chicago to take on the Bears. Any chance the Seahawks shock us twice?

Champs Beat by Worst Playoff Team Ever and Jets Win Rematch in Indy

Many analysts heading into the postseason argued that the Seahawks had no business being in the playoffs. They had a losing record of 7-9 and didn't look like they could compete with any other postseason teams. They proved everyone wrong today as they played a game at Qwest field against the defending Super Bowl Champion, New Orleans Saints. Matt Hasselbeck had a career day throwing for 272 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT against the champs. The Seahawks actually had a small lead in the 4th until Marshawn Lynch ran a improbable 67 yard TD to give Seattle an 11 point lead with 3:22 to go. The Saints would score a TD with 1:30 left but couldn't retrieve the onside kick. Seahawks shock the football world, 41-36.

What about the other team that was in last year's Super Bowl? Oh Yes, the Colts. They played the Jets at Lucas Oil Stadium in a rematch of last year's AFC Championship game. It seemed like it would be the same result as Adam Vinatieri made a 50 yard FG for the Colts to give them a 2 point lead with 53 seconds left. However, Antonio Cromartie returned the kickoff 47 yards to give the Jets a chance. Thanks to some clutch throws by Sanchez and a great catch by Braylon Edwards, the Jets had a FG shot from 32 yards out for Nick Folk. He would make the FG as time expired and clinch the win for the Jets, 17-16. It might've been a 1 point game but Rex Ryan was happy to have finally beaten Peyton Manning.

We are only one day into the NFL Postseason and last year's Super Bowl teams are already eliminated. Second day of the first round is tomorrow featuring the Ravens vs. the Chiefs and the Packers vs. the Eagles.

Jim Harbaugh Takes the Golden Opportunity

The Jim Harbaugh version of "The Decision" is over. Harbaugh has agreed to become the 49ers head coach at $25 Million for 5 years. Harbaugh recently lead the Stanford Cardinal to an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech with the star Andrew Luck as QB. The team was 1-11 when he arrived and he leaves them a BCS Bowl winner at 12-1. Truly a phenomenal story for any college football coach. Now Harbaugh will start with another bad team; the 49ers. They just finished 6-10, well below expectations of the fan base, the organization, and the media.

As a 49ers fan, why do I feel like this wasn't a good thing? I don't really have a specific reason on why Harbaugh shouldn't be the Head Coach just that he's a college Head Coach. There have been a few College Head Coaches that have gone to coach in the NFL and succeed but most have been a bust. Plus, I remember the Dennis Erickson tenure and that lousy 2-14 season. That hire alone set us back several years. But then again, Jim Harbaugh has played in the NFL and knows what he's getting into. This previous experience gives me some hope but I would've still like to have had a coach that coached in the NFL or was an assistant coach looking for his big break.

While I expect the worst, I wish Jim Harbaugh the best in turning around the 49ers. DON'T SCREW IT UP!!!

Miami Will Keep Tony Sparano

Miami has struggled the last couple of seasons trying to get in front of either the Pats or the Jets. This year they went 7-9 and, even though they were great on the road, they only won 1 game at home. The thought was that Tony Sparano was going to get the boot this off season, especially when the team decided to interview Jim Harbaugh today for the head coach's job supposedly offering him $7-8 Million a year. After those talks, however, things seemed to have not gone Miami's way. They will keep Tony Sparano on as their head coach.

Is this a joke? This team has deliberately looked for a new head coach while still holding on to the one they are trying to replace. Who the hell does that? It seems like the worst thing you can do. Yes, many businesses interview for positions they seek to replace but it is usually not openly broadcasted like this. Sparano is now in a tough situation to try and coach a team that only wants him because they couldn't replace him. Sparano is going to get no respect from his players and the staff with everyone knowing management tried to pull this kind of stunt off. The Dolphins should be ashamed of themselves for trying something this low, especially since it didn't work (HA HA HA).

P.S. What does this mean for Jim Harbuagh? Is he really staying at Stanford with Andrew Luck?

Stanford Stays Lucky

Andrew Luck had a big decision of ahead of him after Stanford's Orange Bowl win: to enter the NFL Draft or stay in college for one more season. The NFL Draft is in the spring but Luck needed to make a decision whether to commit to the draft or not in the next few days. Analysts have already picked Andrew Luck as the unanimous #1 pick for the draft but those predictions went away when Andrew Luck said he will not enter the draft but stay in school for another year. Luck would say "I am committed to earning my degree in architectural design from Stanford University and am on track to accomplish this at the completion of the spring quarter of 2012."

Education has a price of its own but what was the cost of this education? The Panthers would of no doubt made Luck there starting QB for 2011 and would have probably paid him a large amount even though a rookie wage scale is just around the corner. The only thing that Luck can do now is hurt his draft status for 2012. He could get hurt like Sam Bradford did or perform poorly like Jake Locker did. Though to be fair, Bradford still went #1 is the last draft. Maybe Luck figured that to be the case for injury and felt he wasn't ready for the NFL in talent. Maybe he wanted another shot at a National Title, especially if Harbaugh makes a surprise move to stay at Stanford. Or maybe he really values an education that much. He is going to Stanford.

So who will be the #1 pick for 2011? Even though Carolina is still poor in the QB spot, they might take some sort of defensive star instead.

Titans to Part Ways with Vince Young

This season has been a disappointment for the Titans since starting the year at 5-2. The team would go on to win only one more game the rest of the year. But there are greater issues for the team this off season as they try to rebuild. One such issue was who to keep; Vince Young or Jeff Fisher. The two had an altercation in the locker room after the loss to the Redskins in week 11. It was possibly spurned because Young had to leave with an injury and would toss his pads into the crowd as he left. From that point on, it didn't seem that the two would be able to work together again.

The recent news is that the Titans seemed to have decided who they're getting rid of: Vince Young. Apparently they will say goodbye to Young before the start of the next season. He will be probably be traded away but what about Jeff Fisher? He seems to be safe but Bud Adams, the Titan owner, says he will also evaluate the coaching staff like he did with the QB position. That seems like a vague answer and will at least entail changing the lesser coaches but I doubt they're going to get rid of Jeff Fisher. Though if they were, this would be the time to do it. The Titans currently have the 8th pick in the draft and have a good spot for picking a talented QB. Perhaps if Adams thinks Fisher's tenure in Tennessee might be over soon, he might change head coaches now so that the new coach will have a QB he chose, not one Jeff Fisher chose.

Lot to think about for the Titans. Once they decide what to do the head coaching spot, they will need to pick a QB. Lot of scouting to do for them.

NOW You're Fired

These past couple of days have been really weird around Ann Arbor. First there was a report that Michigan had fired Rich Rodriguez and the media began speculating (including myself) about who would take over as head coach there. Then later that day Michigan denied any such report and said they were going to meet with Rich Rod today. After that meeting, Dave Brandon, the Athletic Director of the university, announced that Rich Rod was now fired. I wonder why they just couldn't let the old report stand.

Whatever the case, Rich Rod has been voted out of the Big House. Perhaps he was initially fired but Michigan began to rethink there when they heard that Jim Harbaugh would most likely turn down the Michigan job if offered. Sounds plausible. Then why fire him now? True he has had a lousy record while there but there seems to be no one good to replace him. The Harbaugh rumors seem true as Brandon said "I personally believe that Jim Harbaugh is headed to the NFL, that's my opinion." That also seems true as Harbaugh has an upcoming meeting with the 49ers. It doesn't look like anyone wants to coach that program anymore even though it has had a proud football past. Sure someone will take the job but it will not likely be anyone Michigan has first on there list.

Ohio State Tastes Sugar Bowl Victory

Big game for Ohio State tonight as they squared off against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. The Buckeyes would get a sizable lead for the half but the Razorbacks would regroup and get within 5 points with about 9 minutes to go. They had their chances and even some big breaks but couldn't capitalize as the Buckeyes would hold on defensively and win, 31-26. The thing I found funny was that many of the big plays were made by some of the players who are going to be suspended for the first 5 games of next season. Players like Terrelle Pryor (of course), DeVier Posey, and Soloman Thomas who made the interception to seal the win for the Buckeyes. Funny how the game is affected so much by those players. It's like the NCAA knew they were key players.

P.S. Okay, so the NCAA let some players play when they weren't logically supposed to but hey, at least it wasn't for the illegitimate BCS National Championship. They're letting Cameron Newton play for that.

Raiders (Al Davis) Decline Tom Cable's Option

Okay so Al Davis isn't so old that he's slow on some decisions. He is senile though.

The Raiders decided to not exercise their option on Tom Cable for two more seasons at $5 million. The assumption now is that the Raiders will promote their Offensive Coordinator, Hue Jackson, to Head Coach considering that the 49ers have recently got permission from the Raiders to interview him for their Head Coaching vacancy. But this move has quite some controversy with it. Tom Cable is let go after the Raiders' best record (8-8) since 2002 when the Raiders were the AFC Champions. This record is actually a significant sign of improvement as the team was 5-11 in the previous season and actually won every divisional game this season.

Unfortunately for Tom Cable, the Raiders are run by an old man who gets cranky when things are not run in his way. This decision makes no sense to me. Instead of trying to development a team around a guy who has shown considerable improvement, they go with someone else and start fresh. Well, not totally fresh as Hue Jackson is in the organization. Still, you don't how he will do as a head coach. There is player development, scouting, trying to manage an entire game including tough calls to make in key situations. Of course Al Davis is going to do what he wants to do and for that the Raider Nation suffers.

P.S. Don't feel bad for Tom Cable totally. He'll definitely get another job as a head coach somewhere. But be careful, Tom. You can punch a guy in the face but your not allowed to improve your team's record (HA HA HA).

P.P.S. Maybe the news of Cable's punch is finally being heard by Al Davis after repeating it a million times in his ear. Then I'd better start saying this now. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AL. YOU'RE MAKING THE 49ERS LOOK REALLY GOOD!!!

New Year's Coaching Resolutions

Of course with the end of the NFL and College Football seasons upon us there are several coaching decisions to be made and have been made. One such situation is Eric Mangini recently being fired from the Cleveland Browns with a 5-11 record for both years there. As for who will coach the team, it is still unknown but Mike Holgren has not completely ruled himself out but says he is not in the initial search. I would be surprised if Manginiis back as a Head Coach in the NFL next year. An assistant coach or cooridnator job should suit him.

As for the other vacancies, the 49ers are still looking and have Jim Harbaugh at the top of the list of possibles. Harbaugh is also being pulled to the Broncos and possibly Michigan now that they have officially fired Rich Rodriguez though recent reports indicate that Harbaugh wouldn't take the Michigan job. There is also a possible vacancy in Oakland as Tom Cable is expected to lose his job even though he has improved the team to 8-8 and has won every game in the division. Knowing the Raiders, they won't make this decision for a couple of weeks due to Al Davis being old (BURN!!!). Also, Carolina has an opening with John Fox leaving. Any coach that comes in will have to remake the team starting with the number one pick in the draft.

There won't be any vacancy in Minnesota as Leslie Frazier is now the official head coach of the Vikings. Jason Garrett, meanwhile, looks like he will stay as the Cowboys head coach but is not a sure thing as of yet. Tom Coughlin is safe in New York as the Giants say they will keep him. Jack Del Rio will stay on in Jacksonville but will get the boot if he fails to get a playoff spot next year. Marvin Lewis is actually going to stay in Cincinnati as he just signed a contract extension despite the Bengals dropping to 4-12. Lastly, Miami may have a vacancy as Tony Sparano is in the hot seat. Though the firing of Sparano may not do anything as the team is still in the AFC East with the Pats and the Jets.

I'm sure there will be some more coaching news in the week to come and Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher will aslo have there names thrown around. Any chance the 49ers can get one of them instead?

Stanford Reaches Their Peak and Sees Their Decline

The third BCS Bowl game commenced today with the Orange Bowl featuring Stanford and Virginia Tech. Stanford felt very lucky in this one as their QB Andrew Luck threw for 287 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT. Stanford would end up winning this game 40-12. Virginia Tech managed to keep pace in the first half but just couldn't score a point in the 2nd. Jim Harbaugh gets Stanford their first bowl win in 14 years and a BCS Bowl win at that.

Unfortunately, it's probably all downhill from here. Andrew Luck will likely enter the NFL Draft and there are many coaching possibilities for Jim Harbaugh. The 49ers are very interested in Harbaugh along with the Broncos and possibily Michigan. So for now, enjoy the victory, Stanford, because everyone is about to jump ship anyway.

Week 17: Packers Playoff Bound, Colts Claim the AFC South, the Seahawks Win the Mild Mild West and More

Last week of the regular season with the playoffs starting next week. Packers went in controlling their own destiny and needing a win over the Bears to claim the last Wild Card spot. Even though the Bears clinched a bye week already, they were still hoping for Home Field Advantage and gave it their all. It turned out to be a defensive game at Lambeau with the edge going to the Packers, 10-3. They get into the playoffs as the 6th seed. The Packers have had a crazy year but get back to the Postseason.

The Colts also needed a win to get a playoff spot or risk losing it to Jacksonville. The Colts would get a game winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri as time expired, 23-20. Peyton Manning threw for 264 yards and 2 TDs while the ground game ran for 101 combined yards. Jacksonville would lose their game, anyway, to the Texans, 34-17. As for settling the AFC North, Steelers had a edge going into the week over Baltimore with a better division record. The Steelers knew that and won their game over the Browns, 41-9, for a first round bye. Big Ben threw for 280 yards and 2 TDs in the AFC North Clinching game. The Ravens still win their game over the Bengals, 13-7, but doesn't amount to anything more than the 5th seed in the AFC postseason picture.

The Sunday Night Game featured a default NFC West Division Title game between the Rams and the Seahawks in a loud Qwest Field. It was a defensive game throughout and, other than a 4 yard TD pass from Charlie Whitehurst to Mike Williams on the first drive, there were no TDs scored. Thanks to the crowd noise and some cushion from that first drive, the Seahawks won the game and the Division, 16-6. They finish at 7-9 and are the first team to win a division title with a record under .500. An historic low for any playoff team but it's a playoff spot and that's what counts. This 7-9 team will host the 11-5 Saints next week. That's weird to say.

Other games included Brett Favre watching his last game go bye bye as the Vikings lose to the Lions, 20-13. Joe Webb not as great tonight as he threw for 145 yards, no TDs, and 1 INT. Giants and Bucs wins their respective games but do not get into the playoffs because of the Packers beating the Bears. Giants say they will keep Tom Coughlin, despite missing the playoffs, while Raheem Morris is looking good knowing that he has improved the Bucs considerably with Josh Freeman as QB. And the Atlanta Falcons take Home Field Advantage by beating the Panthers, 31-10. Matt Ryan threw for 236 Yards and 2 TDs in important last regular season game.

The Playoff picture is now crystal clear: The NFC games will be the Saints at the Seahawks and the Packers at the Eagles with the Falcons and Bears getting the bye. The AFC games will be the Jets at the Colts and the Ravens at the Chiefs while the Patriots and the Steelers take the week off as the top 2 seeds. Is it Super Bowl time yet?

P.S. Looks like Bill Cowher will not go to the Giants. Can somebody tell him there is an opening in San Francisco? It doesn't snow at all.

Coach Already Fired, Urban Meyer Finishes with a Win, and Chalrie Weis Headed to Florida

Some notable college football coaching news has already hit 2011. First was the firing of Pittsburgh Head Coach. Didn't the head coach resign? No, that was Dave Wannstedt a month ago. They fired the new coach, Mike Haywood, after he was arrested for a domestic violence charge. He only served as head coach for 2 1/2 weeks and never coached a game. You'd think George Steinbrenner was behind this. A little pathetic to see a new coach already fired from his job but proves that image is key to any relationship. Too bad Haywood's is already ruined.

As for Florida, Urban Meyer has coached his last game in college football (for now). The Gators got Meyer the win, 37-24, over Penn State in the Outback bowl. Hope Meyer enjoys his family life. Some big changes were recently made at the university while Meyer was still there. They hired a new head coach (after making sure that Meyer was serious about leaving this time) and his name is Will Muschamp. He is a first time head coach who has been a defensive coordinator at one place or another for the past ten years, most recently Texas. Muschamp was hired back in December.

Florida has already made another significant hire to help Muschamp out. Charlie Weis, who seems to have reinvigorated the Chiefs offense, has taken the job of Offensive Coordinator at Florida. I wonder how much better the pay is to work at a College Football program like Florida compared to working for the Chiefs. Or perhaps Chalrie Weis like working with college kids more than pro athletes. Whatever the reason, he's going back to school.

I wonder who Pitt will hire then fire next and it looks like Florida will be a major player again in 2011 if Weis can get that offense working above par once more.

Happy 2011: TCU Wins the Rose Bowl, Oklahoma Has a Fiesta, and the Capitals Win the Winter Classic

Happy New Year everyone. Of course certain sports like to have big games on the first day of the every year and there were three that stood out. One of those was the Rose Bowl as usual. Wisconsin squared off against TCU in lovely Pasadena. Many gave the edge to the Badgers but the Horned Frogs had heart and showed it in this one. TCU managed to hold a lead for most of the game and denied a key two point conversion from Wisconsin with just two minutes to go. TCU would get the ball off the onside kick and managed to run out the clock for the victory, 21-19. They proved to everyone, even me, that they belonged on the BCS Stage. Enjoy the Roses.

The next big game was the Fiesta Bowl featuring UConn and Oklahoma. The Sooners played big in this bowl game crushing the Huskies, 48-20. Landry Jones threw 3 TDs and 429 yards on route for the victory. Congrats to Bob Stoops and the Sooners as they rebound from last season's disappointments.

The last big game of the day was in Hockey with the annual Winter Classic. This year featured the Capitals and the Penguins at Heinz Field in the first Winter Classic Game at night. Eric Fehr of the Capitals became the hero tonight scoring two goals to give the Caps the win, 3-1. Though just a regular season game, 68 thousand plus was in attendance to give some serious cash flow.

Great set of games to kick off the new year and some more on the way. Last week of the NFL is tomorrow and then the Orange and Sugar bowl are right after that. Looks like a great year already.

My New Years Resolution:

To watch more MLS.

To curse the hypocrisy of College Football everyday.

To try and care about the NBA (Most Difficult).
