Top Ten Sports Stories of 2011

As we are about to welcome 2012 or are currently welcoming 2012 in some parts of the world, we must take a look back at what was 2011 in sports. There has been plenty of good moments to bring up around the water cooler but here are my Top Ten Sports Stories of the Year.

10. Tied for 10 is Tony Stewert winning the Sprint Cup in NASCAR and the LA Galaxy winning the MLS Cup over the Dynamo, 1-0. Tony Stewert's title means the end of the Jimmie Johnson's magnificent run and the Galaxy winning with Beckham makes their ultimate goal come true.

9. A couple of milestones for Yankees. First, Derek Jeter hits his 3000th hit with a home run back in July against the Rays and David Price. He went 5-5 including hitting in the game winning run in the 8th with a single. It was all Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium. When the night was over, he was at 3,003 career hits. Later Mariano Rivera gets his 600th career saves and then, less than a week later, gets his 602nd save making him the all time saves leader.

8. Japan wins the FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating the USA in penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation and added extra time. A big win for the nation of Japan months after a tsunami hit their shores causing much tragedy and damage.

7. Miami U Scandal and Nevin Shapiro. Handing out of improper benefits from 2002-2010 at least. 72 counts were reported at the time. Whole program in shame and awaits sentencing. More like execution.

6. The collapse of the Red Sox and the Braves. Red Sox had a 9 game lead over the Rays in early September and lost it. Braves had a 10 ½ game lead over the Cardinals and lost it. The Red Sox cleaned house as a result getting a new manager and eventually a new GM. Braves, meanwhile, do nothing with management.

5. The Bruins winning the Stanley cup for the first time nearly 40 years, Vancouver going crazy, and Boston sports franchises winning a title in each of the 4 major sports in the last ten years. A big moment for the Boston and the New England area sealing up the last of the titles. Great time to be from there.

4. NFL and NBA Lockouts. Both went a bit differently as the NBA were the only ones to lose parts of their regular season but deals got done eventually for both leagues.

3. Penn state scandal involving Jerry Sandusky and several underage boys going back to the mid 1990’s. While a horrible story and definitely a tragic one, it is no doubt one of the biggest stories of the year and the biggest sports related scandals of all time if not the biggest.

2. Cardinals winning the World Series in dramatic fashion just edging out the Texas Rangers, 4 games to 3 and Albert Pujols going to the Angels. Hometown hero David Freese is the MVP and deservedly so. Great moment in St. Louis doesn't last forever, though, as Pujols leaving is the other big part to this story. The Cardinals will be fine in the long run. It's the Angels' budget in the future I'm worried about.

1. Mavericks win the NBA Finals over the Miami Heat, 4-2, with Dirk Nowitzki suddenly becoming the most popular man in the US and the world. The Miami Heat became the most hated team in history and everyone in the country outside of South Beach was rooting for their opponents. Anyone that could stop the Heat in the postseason would be instantly loved and that was the Mavs and Nowitzki. Dirk Finally gets his ring after 13 seasons in the NBA.

Biggest sports story that hasn’t happened yet is Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. Seriously?

My personal favorite story of the year: 49ers getting back into the playoffs. First time since 2002 the 49ers make the postseason and at the same time win the NFC West. I hope for bigger things in 2012.

Well their is my list with some added stories towards the end. I hope you all enjoy your New Year's parties, safely, of course.

Lesnar Loses, Then Retires

Okay, I think this is my first UFC post ever so forgive me for being inaccurate or not caring.

Brock Lesnar, a so called star of UFC, had a fight last night against Alistair Overeem. Somehow Brock Lesnar seemed like no match for Overeem quickly losing in a TKO decision after getting hit in the stomach a bit too much. Lesnar losing the fight is only half the story. Afterwards, Lesnar seemingly retired from the sport saying "This is the last time you'll see me in the octagon." It seems the career of Brock Lesnar as a MMA Fighter is over.

Okay, why the hell was this guy ever popular? He had 8 total fights in his career, actually won a World Title in 4th match and lost that in his 7th match. All this in a 4 year career. Maybe a lot of that fame had to do with the fact that he was in the WWE for a while and very popular there but that was a long time ago. How is the fact that he was a fake fighter give him credit in UFC? It didn't work for Kimbo Slice.

Whatever Lesnar does now, I hope he will enjoy it. The minor WWE fan inside of me hopes that he will go back into the Pro Wrestling industry but that bridge seemed to have been burned a long time ago.

P.S. I also wrote this article because it was part of my 2011 New Year's Resolution. Just beat the clock on this one. Now how am I going to lose 75 pounds by midnight...

Is Brady Injured?

As the postseason approaches, sometimes it's more important to keep your stars (QBs) healthy instead of trying to secure positioning in the playoffs. The Steelers have had to face that a bit with Ben Roethlisberger and now it looks like the Pats might need to start doing that with Tom Brady. Tom Brady had some X-Rays done yesterday centering around his left shoulder. While securing Home Field Advantage in the AFC is very important, a coach definitely wants to make sure their players are healthy for the playoffs.

It looks like nothing serious as it might be just be precautionary but if there was a team that couldn't survive without their QB more, it might be the Patriots. Sure the Packers depend on Aaron Rodgers and the Saints love the pass happy Drew Brees, but the Pats would be nothing this season without Tom Brady. He is arguably more valuable for his team than Aaron Rodgers is to his (and the Packers need Rodgers). The Pats just don't have a good defense at all and need Tom to be there.

If I was Belichick, my priority would be making sure Brady stayed healthy.

P.S. My off season priority would be to get a defense.

Packers Take #1 Seed and Brees Sets a Record

It's been a fascinating last couple of days in the NFL. Last night on Christmas day the Packers faced the Bears at Lambeau Field hoping to give their fans what they really wanted for Christmas: Home Field Advantage throughout the playoffs. They definitely did that. The Bears kept it close for the first half but lost control of the situation by the third quarter. The Packers would beat the Bears, 35-21. Aaron Rodgers had a great day with 5 TD passes in the game. The big picture is, of course, the Packers secured the #1 seed in the NFC.

Week 16 ended today with Monday Night Football featuring the Falcons and the Saints. The last time these two teams faced each other it came down to OT and the questionable 4th down call by the Falcons. The Falcons would've loved to have made that decision again after this second time around. The Saints would march all over the Falcons, 45-16. Drew Brees was the story at the end of the game. He threw for 307 yards and 4 TDs. His 307 yards tonight barely gets by Dan Marino's record for single season passing yards as Brees now has 5087 passing yards for the season, 3 more than Marino in 1984. Brees came 15 yards short of this record in 2008 but now has broken it this year with 1 game still left to play.

This big Christmas weekend in the NFL is over. Only one game left for everyone and there is still a lot on the line. The AFC West has yet to settled, an AFC Wild Card spot is still up for grabs, and the NFC East will be decided between the Giants and the Cowboys. New Year's day will have a lot to look forward to.

A Unwrapped NBA Season

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas. I sure did hanging out with family and friends and having a good time. So did many fans watching the first NBA games of the season.

The start of the NBA Season was the gift to the sports world as five games were played on Christmas day. A special gift went to the Dallas Mavericks as they were finally able to put up their first championship banner. Pity that Dallas' Christmas party was crashed by the same team the Mavs beat to get the banner: the Miami Heat. The Heat would win this one, 105-94. King James had 37 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists while his teammate, Dwayne Wade, didn't do too bad himself with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Good showing by the Heat.

Other games included the Knicks barely edging out the Celtics in MSG, 106-104. The celebs came out to see their Knicks play and got to see Carmelo Anthony put up 37 points in the win. In LA, the Bulls managed to pull off a win against the Lakers, 88-87, thanks to a great shot by Derrick Rose near the end. Looks like the MVP is already showing why he deserved that extended contract. Also featured were the Thunder defeating the Orlando Magic, 97-89, and the LA Clippers beating the Golden State Warriors, 105-86, with Chris Paul making his Clips debut.

A fair day of basketball to start off the season and to celebrate Christmas. As for my 2012 NBA Season prediction, why bother? I thought there wouldn't be a season to speak of. So much for the Vacancies winning the title this year.

10 Things I Want For Sportmas

First I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Like everyone during this great gift giving season, there is a few things I would love for Christmas, at least for the Sports World. Here they are.

10. A good set of NBA Christmas Games. Tomorrow's openers look promising and fun for the league. Let's all unwrap this present to see if the quality is any good.

9. Sidney Crosby to come back for good. The NHL and I need Crosby to return just to hold the casual sports viewer's attention.

8. Goal Line Technology for Soccer. It's been on the horizon for a while but it has yet to be implemented. Let's get that done, FIFA.

7. The 49ers to actually stay in the city limits of San Francisco. It isn't going to happen but you never know.

6. A Giants Baseball Jersey. I have to be a bit selfish, okay.

5. Already some new uniforms for the Marlins. The ones they just got look horrible.

4. Some Discipline for the Red Sox. Let the hammer fall, Bobby.

3. College Football Playoffs. There is some talk about it happening. That's moving forward from last year.

2. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. I've been waiting for this one for a while and it looks like it won't come soon what with Mayweather's sentencing.

1. To any 49ers fans out there, you can guess what #1 is.

Merry Christmas, Everyone.

An NFL Christmas

Instead of playing most of the games on Christmas, the NFL did the right thing and scheduled almost all of them either before or after the big day. There is still that Sunday Night game with the Packers and the Bears but you can't get rid of them all. At least they tried to plan around it unlike some leagues (NBA).

Anyway, the highlight game of the day was arguably in New Jersey where the Giants and the Jets played it out before the a large crowd. As this game progressed, it was the G-Men that grabbed the attention. The Giants were able to win it, 29-14, thanks to some Jets mistakes at the end, one of which was a safety. Meanwhile, the Giants NFC East opponent, the Dallas Cowboys, lost to the Eagles, 20-7, but may have lost even more. Tony Romo hurt his hand during their first possession and had to sit out the remainder of the game. Romo plans to play against the Giants next week in an epic showdown for the division.

Other games that were played included the Pats coming from a 17-0 deficit to win, 27-24. You can't count Brady out as he threw a TD and ran for two more for the win. Tim Tebow gets a rough dose of reality as he and the Broncos lose a second straight game, this one to the Bills, 40-14. 4 INTs for Tebow is not what the Broncos wanted to see. Meanwhile, the Raiders win their game against the Chiefs in OT, 16-13. The Broncos still have a tie breaker advantage over the Raiders but they better not slip up next week vs. the Chiefs. Last one I'll mention is the Lions beating the Chargers, 38-10, as they win their 10th game this year and clinch a playoff spot. This win gives them a playoff berth for the time since 1999.

The only games left this week are that Sunday Night one and the Monday Night game with the Saints and the Falcons.

49ers Win on Christmas Eve

Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays. I sure am. On Christmas Eve, the 49ers looked to give me one of the things I wishing for. No, not a new car, though I wouldn't object. A Win. The 49ers went into Seattle into that loud stadium of theirs and had a close game with the Seahawks. The Seahawks contolled this game until the 3rd quarter when the 49ers took a 16-10 lead by the early 4th. A block punt, however, gave the momentum and the lead back to the Seahawks as it led to a Marshawn Lynch TD run. The 49ers didn't lose confidence, though, as they managed another FG from David Akers to give them a 2 point lead.

With little under 3 minutes left, the Seahawks had gotten the ball back and were driving down field when Larry Grant of the 49ers knocked the ball out of Tavaris Jackson's hand and forced a fumble the 49ers recovered. The 49ers weren't able to run out the clock but they were able to make Seattle use all of their timeouts and punt them out of striking distance. With only 41 seconds left, Jackson wasn't able to move the Seahawks this time as he would force a turnover on downs. The 49ers kneed it out and won, 19-17.

The Red and Gold advance to 12-3 and remain in the driver's seat for the #2 seed in the NFC. A couple of historic things to note as David Akers' FGs tonight (4 of them) makes him the record holder for the most FGs in a single season with 42. This game was also the first game this season that any team has run a TD on us. But a win is a win.

One more game left in the season and it's technically next year against the Rams in St. Louis.

A Buckeye Bowl Ban? For What, Really?

It looks like the end of the line with the Ohio State gift scan... you know what, this isn't a scandal and quite frankly it's stupid that rules like this exist and that there are punishments handed out for violating them.

Let's dissect this idiotic system, shall we. They put into place a system where a player gets a free education in exchange for them playing ball (or their respective sport) for that university. Attached to it are all these stupid rules basically saying that a player can't as much as sneeze or they will have "violated" the amateur system in place. Meanwhile, the universities make money off of the ticket sales and the memorabilia sales.

Above is the original system. Today the "Student Athlete" still have the same terms in place; free education and they can't sneeze without getting in trouble. The universities, however, make money not only from ticket sales and the memorabilia sales but from large TV deals reached with conferences, advertisements, bowl games, donors, and heaven knows where else. If the "Student Athletes" had a union, they would be considered the worst union in the world.

The "Student Athlete" is being ripped off. They theoretically have less rights than a worker. At least a worker can join a union and try to collectively bargain. "Student Athletes" can't. They are not recognized as a labor force. They are recognized as "Student Athletes" which is really a term that hurts them by painting them as something else besides a worker or part of the labor force. They provide a service to their employer and get compensated for it. THAT IS LABOR!!!

The problem is that the NCAA and the sports world paints them as something other than a labor force when in reality they are a labor force that are being denied a right to unionize and collectively bargain. What's worse is that the players keep buying into this pathetic system and I don't blame them for buying in. They are young adults that are still learning how the world works and are happy to get a free education, which is really just change at this point in time. Unfortunately, in the meantime, they are being ripped off and most of these "Student Athletes" don't see it and most likely will never recognize how much they were truly cheated.

49ers Say "Lights Out" to the Steelers

Last night capped off Week 15 in a bit of dramatic fashion. The Steelers went into San Francisco to face the 49ers on Monday Night Football. It was the 49ers last home game of the season and it was a doozy of a match up. Both teams had something to play for despite both already having a postseason spot. The Steelers were looking to continue their bid for the #1 seed in the AFC while the 49ers wanted to stay on track for the #2 seed in the NFC which would get them a bye week in the postseason. For positioning sake, each team needed a win.

This great game, however, was actually delayed by about 20 minutes as a transformer went down in the area causing the whole stadium to black out. I tried to reach out to Optimus Prime to see if he knew anything about it. Still no comment. Anyway, the game started and the injured Big Ben Roethlisberger looked shaky from the start throwing 2 INTs in their first two drives. Luckily for the Steelers, they only resulted in two FGs for the 49ers.

Then in the middle of the 2nd quarter the lights went out again causing a 16 minute delay. Another crazy power problem for this game but it would resume and it was 6-0 in favor of the 49ers at the half. The Steelers would manage a FG in the 3rd quarter from Suisham but the 49ers answered with a 1 yard TD pass to Vernon Davis off a very convincing play action pass by Alex Smith. Later the 49ers would get the ball in favorable field position in the 4th quarter due to a Big Ben fumble. Thanks to a questionable ref call on a FG attempt by Akers, the 49ers got another chance on the drive and scored a TD via a Frank Gore 5 yard TD run. The Steelers couldn't solve the 49ers defense and Big Ben even through one more INT in the game. The 49ers win their last home game of the year, 20-3.

A big win for the 49ers as they were 1-2 in their last three games entering last night. This big win for the team gets a bunch of that momentum back and helps them moving forward. Of course everyone now questions whether or not Big Ben should've played seeing that his ankle injury kept him from being the mobile QB everyone knows. Now the Steelers are technically behind the Ravens in the AFC North.

As for the 49ers, they manage to stay the course for the 2 seed. I thought the Steelers would knock them off course but the 49ers were having none of that. 49ers have two games left having to face the Seahawks and then the Rams. They will most likely need to win out to secure the 2 seed but they might be able to claim it this weekend if the 49ers win and the Saints lose to the Falcons which could happen.

Packers Take Their First Loss, Pats Ruin the Tebow Show, Colts Win and More

The Green Bay Packers were 13-0 entering this Sunday's match up with the Chiefs and it looked obvious going in that they were going to be 14-0. A new QB and new head coach for the Chiefs spells trouble. Or did it spell life for Kansas City? The second one. Aaron Rodgers had trouble today moving the ball and getting TD's against the Chiefs led by Kyle Orton and Romeo Crennel. Somehow the Chiefs controlled and owned this ballgame and managed to hold on to the ball at the end to win it. Chiefs win, 19-14, and give the Packers an early Christmas gift: their first loss of the year. Every team has to loss sometime but to the Chiefs?

Later that day, there was a showdown in Denver between the Patriots and the Broncos. Everyone in Denver had been chugging the cool aid that Tim Tebow was providing, all except the new guys in the town led by Tom Brady. The Broncos were able to keep it close for a while until the 2nd quarter when the Pats outscored them 20-3 in that quarter. The Pats controlled the rest of the game and won it, 41-23. 3 turnovers on 3 fumbles (one by Tebow) cost the Broncos dearly as the Pats committed no turnovers. Brady and the Pats just proved too much for the Broncos this day.

As for the rest of the league, the Broncos were able to maintain a 1 game lead over the AFC West, however, thanks to the Lions defeating the Raiders, 28-27. A TD pass to Calvin Johnson with under 40 seconds left gives them the lead and a block FG on Sebastian Janikowski's kick by Ndamukong Suh seals this one for the Lions as they are now 9-5. The Colts manage to win their first game of the year, 27-13, over the Titans. They avoid the shame of having a winless season and with that Peyton Manning is now not coming back this year for sure. The NFC East is now set up for a wild finish as the Giants lose to the Redskins 23-10, the Cowboys beat the Bucs (last night) 31-15, and the Eagles defeated the Jets 45-19. The Giants and the Cowboys can still take the division by winning out but the Eagles' dream of a postseason barely lives on.

A wild Week 15 throughout the NFL and the week ends tonight with the Steelers coming into San Francisco to face the 49ers. GO NINERS!!!

P.S. It's at this time that I say to Don Shula and the remaining 72' Dolphins to go F**K THEMSELVES!!! I hope the corks hit you in the Jingle Balls you arrogant bastards. Merry Christmas!!!

Barry Bonds is Sentenced

The Barry Bonds steroids story seems to be at a near end. Bonds was sentenced yesterday for the one count of obstruction of justice that he was found guilty of back in April. Bonds was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest and two years probation. The prosecution wanted him to serve 15 months in prison but Bonds' history up to this point has seemingly gotten him a lighter sentence. Anyway, it doesn't seem light enough. Bonds will not serve the sentence immediately as he is appealing the decision.

Barry Bonds is getting a slap on the wrist and he is appealing that. How hard is it for you to stay indoors for 30 days? Play a game or something. Just don't juice while you do it. I understand that he has the money to appeal this and he has the right to but this punishment is very minuscule that I'm surprised he's appealing it.

With the courtroom stuff practically over, the Bonds story seems to be finished as well. Bonds will likely be brought up a few more times in the future, most likely when people are discussing whether or not he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Seeing how the writers have treated those steroid users that have recently been added to the ballot, it doesn't look like Bonds will get into Cooperstown.

Chris Paul Headed to "Other" LA Team

Yes, the mean joke continues.

The Chris Paul saga is over. Arguably one of the biggest trade stories of All Time has just ended. Of course this is up there with the biggest because of the all the controversy originally supplied by the NBA. The League denied a trade that would've sent Paul to the Lakers because of the other owners' objections. Apparently that complaint didn't transfer over to the "Other" LA team. I looked it up and the Los Angeles "Clippers" will get Chris Paul in exchange for Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and a few draft picks which include Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first round draft pick. My guess is that the Clippers came across that pick sometime in the past. The 26 year old Chris Paul is now a Clipper.

Well, the story is over. Paul joins Blake Griffin in LA to try and fill the Staples Center for some Clippers' games. They seem to have enough star power to at least do that. Bold move for the Clippers as they are going all in to try and see if they can become a playoff powerhouse. The League, of course, still has some egg on their faces for blocking the trade to the Lakers but at least they won't have an angry Chris Paul that wants to sue them. Perhaps this team can finally get back to the postseason.

As for how far they will go if they do make the playoffs, not far. Paul and Griffin will no doubt be a great combo but we'll have to see how good the rest of the team works together for me to be sold on the Clippers.

P.S. Maybe Paul would sue them anyway. True, he ended up in a city he wanted and a arena he wanted. Just ended up in the wrong locker room.

Where is Chris Paul Going to End Up?

This whole mess just amazes me. The NBA controlled New Orleans Hornets rejected a trade for Chris Paul to the Lakers last week at the behest of the other owners complaining about the trade to a large market team. After the Lakers pulled out, trade talks open up about Paul going to the other team in LA. Now I must remind you all that there is another team in LA. I actually thought there wasn't for the longest time until Blake Griffin showed up and started to play for them. I forget their name, though. Anyway, that team ultimately declined saying the price was too high and then the NBA continued to talk to them about lowering the price. Now it seems that the Lakers aren't even out of the trade talks as they haven't fully ruled out the possibility of getting Paul and are apparently looking for another third team to make this trade work.

I can't believe that Chris Paul wanting out of New Orleans has caused this much trouble and controversy. I also still can't believe the Lakers still want to get Paul. Haven't you heard from the league, IT AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN!!! The owners are just going to have a hissy fit again and force the NBA to block the trade. Plus, the NBA already stopped the trade with the Lakers. It would even be stupider to accept a different trade with them. As for the hypocritical owners, don't hear you all making a fuss about Paul possibly going to the other LA team. Maybe it's because they are not that good but it's still a large market which seems to be what you hate.

As for where Chris Paul goes, I don't care in the long run. I just want more controversy to tear apart the NBA when it does happen.

Sparano and Haley are Fired

Like every season in recent NFL history, some coaches get fired. Jack Del Rio was already fired a couple of weeks ago from the Jaguars. Today saw two more coaches join Del Rio in the unemployment line. First, Todd Haley of the Chiefs was fired as the Chiefs are currently 5-8 and out of the playoff picture after claiming the AFC West last season at 10-6. The second firing was in Miami where the Dolphins showed Tony Sparano the door as his Dolphins were 4-9. Despite some success within the past month and a half, Sparano was let go.

I feel sorry for both coaches but perhaps a bit more for Tony Sparano. Sparano might as well been fired last year as the Dolphins were shopping for a new head coach. Sparano ultimately stayed on knowing that he had no confidence from above despite what the Dolphins organization said. As for Haley, he was dealt quite a few blows this year. Jamaal Charles was gone at the starting line later followed by Matt Cassel in mid season. Those losses are hard to coach around.

It would be nice to see if these coaches ever get another chance in the NFL. I would've like to see what Sparano would do with a team fully behind him and what Haley would do with healthy stars. Maybe these questions will be answered sometime in the future but not likely any time soon.

Sid the Kid Out Already?

Just a few weeks ago, Sidney Crosby made his triumphant return to the ice with an impressive performance over the Islanders. It was his first game since early January of this year. He would play 7 more games but stopped last week due to a couple of hits he sustained from a 3-1 loss to the Bruins. It was initially called a precaution but now it seems more than that. Sidney Crosby has now been ruled out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms. Apparently these symptoms occurred after that game with the Bruins.

So much for a possible rise in the NHL's popularity. The NBA is coming back to overshadow them once more and now their poster boy is out again for most likely another significant period of time. I kind of worry about Sid the Kid's health and whether he should come back at all. As much as the hockey world loves to see him play, head injuries are too serious to ignore. They can cause some severe mental problems later in life if not properly handled.

I hope Sidney Crosby does come back soon but that hope does not seem likely. What fans and the sport should fear even more is the possibility that if this continues, it could lead to an early retirement from Crosby. Quite frankly, I wouldn't blame him if he ultimately chooses retirement to save his health. You have to think about your future and life past the NHL and for Sidney Crosby that line of thinking might come earlier than expected.

More Tebow Please, Packers Still Undefeated, Giants End 4 Game Skid and More

How long is Tim Tebow going to amaze us? As least for one more week. Tebow and Broncos faced the Bears in Denver and, like always, it seemed like Tebow wasn't that good early on. The Bears had a 10-0 lead going into the final minutes of the 4th quarter but it wasn't over yet. Tim Tebow managed to lead his team down the field for a TD pass to Demaryius Thomas with 2:08 left. After a 3 and out for the Bears, the Broncos got it back and managed to just get close enough for Matt Prater to hit the game tying FG from 59 yards out to send the game into OT. In OT, the Broncos got the ball thanks to a fumble and get it close enough for Matt Prater again. He hits another 50+ yarder (51) this time to win the game, 13-10, in OT. The Broncos are now 7-1 with Tebow at the helm and are 8-5 with sole possession of 1st place in the AFC West.

Why do they have sole possession of the AFC West? The Raiders faced the Packers, that's why. This wasn't even a game as it was 31-0 at the half. Packers win, of course, 46-16. While the Broncos are hot under Tebow, the Raiders are more even temperature with Palmer. 3-3 are the Silver and Black with him leading the way. Meanwhile, the Packers are still undefeated at 13-0 and can clinch home field advantage in the playoffs by beating the Chiefs next week. Of course the whole sports world has something else in mind regarding the Packers.

In the other games around the NFL, the Giants manage a comeback win against the Cowboys and end their 4 game skid with a win in Dallas, 37-34. A time out called by Coughlin negates a FG by Bailey which sets up for a blocked FG by Jason Pierre-Paul to prevent OT. Both Giants and the Cowboys are 7-6 in the NFC East and face each other in the Final week of the season. Tom Brady may have had words with a coach on the sideline but the Pats won anyway over the Redskins, 34-27. Rob Gronkowski sets a NFL TD receptions record for tight ends as he now has 15 on the season. The Saints managed to hold off the Titans, 22-17, and have clinched a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Falcons comeback from a 16 point deficit at halftime and beat the Panthers, 31-23. This keeps them as a frontrunner in the Wild Card bidding and still in the hunt for the NFC South should the Saints start to slip up.

I must say a special congratulations to the Houston Texans who won their game against the Bengals last night thanks to TJ Yates, their third string QB who threw a TD pass with 2 seconds left to give the Texans the win, 20-19. This win gives the AFC South title to the Texans and a trip to their first ever postseason. Their tenth season ever is their finest to date.

Cardinals Upset the 49ers

Well, there goes the two seed.

The 49ers clinched the NFC West last week and were looking to take a step closer to getting a bye week for the postseason. It seemed like an easy enough test going into Arizona to face the Cardinals. Some pretty standard stuff happened with the 49ers in this game including the fact they just can't score a TD once they are in the red zone. Luckily for them, they still had a 19-7 lead very early in the 3rd quarter with Kevin Kolb out of the game. It a pity the Cards still have Larry Fitzgerald. Larry gets a 46 yard TD catch a few minutes later in the 3rd and then gets a 53 yard reception in the early 4th that helps set them up for a TD pass to Andre Roberts. The Cardinals somehow managed to hold on for the win, 21-19.

49ers are now 10-3 with this loss and seem exposed. True, Patrick Willis was still out with an injury but the defense didn't look too bad overall. Not great with Larry gladly exposing their flaws but the defense still kept them in the game. It was the offense that still needs some fine tuning. No turnovers in the game which is always a nice thing but seemingly a lack of clutch performances. Alex Smith was off today going 18/37 for 175 yards and he was sacked 5 times which goes against him and the offensive line. Though they needed help certainly moving the sticks towards the end of the game, they needed help finishing drives for TD's during the whole game. To get in the Red Zone and settle for FG's keeps the other team in the game. That offense needs some Red Zone practice this week.

49ers need to have some good practice sessions this week as they face the Steelers in Week 15. Luckily they have an extra day to work out the kinks as it is a Monday Night game at Candlestick.

P.S. Saints holding on for a win against the Titans means they are 10-3. Looking ahead, they have a slightly easier schedule than the 49ers. If the 49ers can somehow beat the Steelers, the two seed might still be theirs.

RG3 Wins Heisman

Andrew Luck was the preseason favorite for the Heisman trophy this season. He was even the favorite for most of the season until November. It was then that one athlete grabbed the attention of all the analysts and kept their attention. Robert Griffin III of Baylor started to shine and had a great season along with his team. They went 9-3, beat Oklahoma on November 19, and went 4-0 in November. 9-3 might not seem great but to Baylor it is as it is their first 9 game winning season in 25 years. The great playing of Griffin paid off last night as he was awarded the 77th Heisman Trophy. The Superman of Baylor was on top of the world.

A great moment for Robert Griffin III and he certainly earned it. He has been great on the field of play and has some impressive stats to prove it. 3998 passing yards, 36 TD passes, 644 rushing yards, and 9 rushing TDs. In the voting department, he got 405 1st place votes and a total of 1687 points which outdoes Andrew Luck by 280. What makes this Heisman winner more impressive is that he is Baylor's first Heisman winner. It's always great to win this award but to be the first winner for your program is truly something special.

Looking in the future, this will probably get Griffin more attention in the draft if he declares for it. For now, congratulations on winning college football's most honored prize. In this situation, Robert Griffin III is Robert Griffin the 1st of Baylor.

P.S. That bad pun had to be attempted at least.

MVP Positive for PEDs

Talk about a lapse in judgement.

It was just last month that Ryan Braun was announced as the NL MVP and everyone was praising him for his abilities. This month already has a different tone with Braun. It was recently revealed that Ryan Braun has tested positive for PEDs. Although this is new information to the sports world, this is old news for Ryan Braun. Braun was reportedly told of the test results back in late October, before he was named MVP (though after the voting process). The reason it has taken so long to go public is that Braun is currently fighting the test results through arbitration. Of course if the results stand, Braun faces a 50 game suspension to start the 2012 season.

The new era of baseball has come and a younger player has been caught using PEDs. And it's a reigning MVP player. This kind of thing breaks the heart of anyone who thought the really good players are clean now. Of course there is a possibility (small) that the test was flawed which is what the Braun camp is arguing. I hope it is wrong just because we need a clean player for the future. However, seeing how these denials have worked out in the past, Braun is most likely guilty.

It's a shame to see baseball's shameful past made present once more. I'm sure that less and less players are using PEDs nowadays (I blissfully hope) but whenever another star is brought down it makes you think that culture and part of the game is still there.

Phat Albert Headed to Anaheim

"The Decision: Albert Pujols" edition is over. Albert has had the most dominating career of anyone in their first 11 seasons. Who doesn't want some of that? The Cardinals, of course, wanted to keep the slugger that had been with them every one of those 11 seasons. The latest offer from the birds seemed to be 9 years, just under $200 million. Also in the running was the Marlins, at least until yesterday. They had offered around 10 years, $220 million. But neither team won Pujols' signature. I want to say it was the Cubs to shock a few Cardinals fans but it wasn't them either. It was the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Pujols agreed to be a Halo for a 10 year, $254 million dollar contract, the second biggest contract ever in MLB history. This is no doubt the biggest deal of the offseason.

Looks like the power balance in LA has shifted in favor of the Angels. Phat Albert playing for the Halos is big news and with his signing and also that of CJ Wilson makes the Angels the automatic favorite in the AL West as of now. Those Rangers better respond with a significant signing if they want to be able to compete. As for the signing itself, it doesn't seem like a deal for the long term. I know it's for 10 years but quite frankly there is no way Pujols is playing to contract expectations near the end of that. Hell, I would even say he's not living to expectations in 5 seasons.

This contract is for the short term. The Angels are going to spend $254 million dollars in the hope of getting a World Series title or two over the next few seasons while Pujols is in his prime. It's not like Pujols can't help them win a title later in his career but it's more likely to happen in the next few years. Good luck to the Angels on this roll of the die. Hope it's not Snake Eyes.

Chris Paul Not to the Lakers

It seemed like a done deal. Chris Paul, who has been wanting to leave the New Orleans Hornets for a while, was about to get his Christmas wish. A trade was set to be executed that involved Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom of the Lakers and a couple of players from the Rockets. A three team trade. Chris Paul was going to end up being a Laker. However, the NBA, who owns the Hornets, decided to break off the deal later as a bunch of the owners had complained about it. The owners had fought for a more competitive league during the lockout that they weren't just gonna let the league send Chris Paul, one of the best point guards, to the Lakers. Chris Paul stays in New Orleans, for now.

A chance for the Chris Paul saga to end and David Stern cuts it off. I wonder if the deal will eventually get done when the CBA is not being ratified. Or when the Hornets get new owners. The sad part is that this team's value is attached to Chris Paul. If the team does get new owners and they happen to come in after the trade deadline with Paul still being on the roster, that hurts the new owners. If I'm a perspective buyer of the Hornets, I would rather have Paul traded for something and not later when the new owner comes in getting nothing for him. Just something to think about.

P.S. Watch out, Orlando. Lakers likely to be looking at Dwight Howard next.

NHL Realignment on the Horizon

That's a major move, eh?

Winnipeg getting an NHL Franchise back has turned the whole system upside down. A couple of scenarios were presented to the Board of Governors about what do to accommodate the Winnipeg Jets. It seems like they went the extreme one. The Board of Governors has approved a radical reshaping of the NHL into 4 conferences instead of two. Two of the conferences will have 8 teams and the other two will have seven teams. The playoffs will have 4 teams from each conference (still a grand total of 16 i.e. way too many) and the conference winners (after they play each other in the conference) will face another conference winner for the right to go to the Stanley Cup Finals. It seems that this system will be finalized later this season and most likely implemented next season.

Lot of issues here. First, why not just have two conferences with just two divisions in each one? That would make more sense than just putting in two more conferences in place. Unless you're rotating on a year to year basis which conference champions play which one in the Semi-finals, it makes more sense to just have two conferences. Second, still too many playoff teams. I know it's the same number but quite frankly when over 1/2 the teams make the postseason it just feels watered down. Third... okay, those were my only complaints... and technically the first one is the only real issue that is solely brought up with this realignment but 16 teams is way too many postseason teams.

Overall, it seems like a good move for the NHL. I still would like to see how they will approach the Semi-finals issue but I'm sure that will get settled fairly. Now that I do think about it, this is a plus for rivalries. The first two playoff rounds being inside your conference (division) seems like a good move for increased interest.

P.S. It's also a plus for the Sharks as they will finally be able to call themselves a conference champion before being eliminated. OH SNAP!!!

Another Brett Favre Comeback? WHY!!!

Please No. No No No NO NO NO NO!!!

I guess the Favre comeback special is not over yet. Brett Favre hasn't made a comeback yet this year or any hints that he will make a comeback until now. Last year was so miserable for the QB and the Vikings that I thought this kind of talk was over. Apparently it is never over when Brett Favre is in the discussion. A source familiar with Brett Favre has said that Favre would listen to a pitch by the Chicago Bears if the Bears wanted to make the retired QB an offer. The Bears have tried winning with Caleb Hanie and haven't so far but still have a chance considering the Lions have taken the chance to grab a game or two over the Bears. Right now, its the Lions, Falcons, and Bears at 7-5 for the Wild Card... OH MY!!!

I thought we were over this. I thought the speculation was over and that he was too old to continue playing but apparently Brett Favre never rules out a comeback. Is this even a good move for the Bears? It doesn't matter. IT'S THE ONLY MOVE LEFT!!! Cutler is gone and I wouldn't bet on the Lions and Falcons to struggle for much longer. Hanie isn't going to get you to the postseason. This might be the last realistic shot for the Bears. Of course, Favre would have to learn the Mike Martz system if he does come back.

Again, this is a longshot if it is indeed going to happen. Favre would be new and the Bears just lost Matt Forte, their RB, for 2-6 weeks. I beg Favre to remember what happened last year when a team came down asking you to return. REMEMBER DAMN IT!!!

Tiger Woods Wins, Big Whoop

Tiger Woods' Wild Ride seem to found some stability over the weekend. In Thousand Oaks, California, Tiger Woods managed to win a tournament. He won the Chevron World Challenge by one stroke shooting a 69 on Sunday and nailing it off with a 6 foot birdie putt. He just edges out Zach Johnson and wins his first tournament in over two years. Looked like he enjoyed it as well.

I'll admit it's big news considering his fall from grace and all that but the 49ers are in the playoffs for the first time in 9 years. SUCK IT, WOODS!!! Sorry, have to try and remain professional. Seriously, good for Tiger finally being able to get another win. It ain't a Major or anything but at this point, he'll take it. Maybe the rest of his career won't be so bad after all.

Jose Reyes is Going to Miami

Big offseason for the now Miami Marlins. A slight name change, a new ballpark for the spring, and a big name free agent to join them. They have been talking to Jose Reyes for a while and finally closed the deal. Reyes agrees to join the Marlins for a 6 year, $106 million contract. He will be 29 in the middle of next season and brings to the team some great base running, fielding, and batting. Though not a power player, he hits well as he led the NL in batting average last season at .337.

A big move for the Marlins as they have added a big name talent for their new ballpark. This move will undoubtedly move Hanley Ramirez from SS to somewhere else in the infield, probably 3B. This makes the left side of their infield very good and strong. Reyes will most likely end up as the lead off hitter for the team and if he can play like he did last year then he'll probably be the best lead off hitter in the majors.

No doubt this is a big move that any one team will be happy to have made during the offseason. However, if you're the New York Yankees, you might not be satisfied with one big move. But this isn't the Yankees, it's the Miami Marlins and they just gotten Reyes and Heath Bell and they still want more. The Marlins sights have changed and they are now pointed at Albert Pujols. First time this team has been able to spend some money and they are making that well known.

Packers Barely Stay Undefeated, More Late Winning for Tebow Led Broncos, Cowboys Upset By Cards and More

The Packers entered Week 13 still undefeated and all eyes were on them, including the rest of the '72 Dolphins, seeing if they would slip up. This week the Pack went into the Meadowlands to face the Giants. The Giants were looking to rebound and looked like they had rebounded, at least on offense. Eli Manning kept the Giants in it and near the end of the game threw a TD pass to Hakeem Nicks and then DJ Ware ran it in for two points. Good news: they tied the game at 35. Bad news: they left 58 seconds left for Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers managed a few nice throws to some receivers and got the team within FG range for Mason Crosby. Crosby hits the 31 yard FG good and wins it as time expired, 38-35, for the Packers. Green Bay are 12-0 and still undefeated while the Giants skid more losing their 4th straight game.

Another game in the NFL that came down to a FG as time expired was in Minnesota. The Broncos faced the Vikings and it became a high scoring game in the 2nd half and, believe it or not, Tim Tebow and the Broncos managed to keep pace. A couple passing TDs from Tebow and a Willis McGahee TD run kept it close. After a Ryan Longwell FG was made for the Vikings with 3:06 to go, the Broncos managed to move it in just close enough for Matt Prater to make the tying FG with 1:33 left. About a minute and a half for Christian Ponder which is plenty of time to make a game winning drive except a Ponder pass was intercepted in Vikings territory by Andre' Goodman and he brought to the 15 of Minnesota. That set up a 23 yard FG by Matt Prater which he made as time expired giving the Broncos the win, 35-32. Broncos win again with Tebow at center and are now 6-1 with him as their starting QB.

As for the rest of the NFL, the Raiders needed a win to keep a game in front of the Broncos. Dolphins blow them out of the water, instead, 34-14. The Broncos and the Raiders are tied in the AFC West at 7-5 apiece. The Giants loss means the Cowboys could get a 2 game advantage in the NFC East. However, they forgot to win. Cardinals beat the Cowboys in OT, 19-13, as the Giants catch a break. The Saints help the Packers clinch the NFC North by beating the Lions, 31-17. The Chiefs also aid the Pack's cause by beating the Bears, 10-3. Last thing I'll mention is the Ravens beat the Browns, 24-10, and the Steelers demolish the Bengals, 35-7. Both teams are 9-3 but the Ravens own the tiebreaker so they technically have the lead in the AFC North.

Week 13 ends Monday night with the Chargers squaring off against the Jaguars.

49ERS, ONCE AGAIN, THE BEST IN THE NFC WEST!!!

Ever since 2002, the 49ers faithful have waited for another playoff shot. It was long and frustrating but the faithful knew it would only be a matter of time before the 49ers were relevant again. That day of relevancy has come back.

Earlier today, the 49ers came into Candlestick to face a long time rival in the St. Louis Rams. The 49ers defense set a early tone that the Rams could not break, even when Patrick Willis had to come out of the ballgame due to a hamstring injury. It was slow starting for the 49ers as they only had a 9-0 lead at halftime. The team came alive in the 2nd with a big TD pass to Michael Crabtree for 52 yards in the early 3rd quarter and then another big TD pass from Alex Smith in the 4th quarter, this time to Kyle Williams for 56 yards. 49ers would win this one and shut out the Rams, 26-0.

You know what that means? THE 49ERS HAVE CLINCHED THE NFC WEST DIVISION TITLE!!! They do that with a record of 10-2 and Alex Smith at the helm. 9 years and 4 head coaches later, the 49ers finally get back to the postseason. Man, it feels good to say that. Most of the credit, if not all, goes to Jim Harbaugh who got this team winning again. As for actual level of play, defense and Alex Smith were the difference. The defense is one of the best in the NFL and Alex Smith, who might not be the best QB we'll ever have, is playing much better and being used in a way where he is not causing us to lose games. Sure, things like the rushing game spearheaded by the now all time rushing leader for the 49ers, Frank Gore, helped get us wins but that was always there the last few seasons.

While I am ecstatic that the 49ers have won the division, there is still much the team can accomplish. They have to keep the pressure on the Packers and hope they slip up for a chance at home field advantage. If that's not possible, they are situated right now for the #2 spot in the NFC which means a bye week. And, of course, there is that prize at the end of the postseason tunnel to think about.

P.S. Catch the season finale of the Sports Khan Radio Show this Thursday at 4 PM on KSUNradio.com... Pretty Good.

P.P.S. Don't worry. Planning to have the show back in January.

McNabb Released by Vikings

Looks like the Vikings have thrown someone off their Longboat. That someone is Donovan McNabb. McNabb came to the team at the start of the season to see if he could lead them back into the playoffs. That dream never came close to becoming true. It wasn't just McNabb's fault but he certainly didn't help. They then decided to start Christian Ponder and get his development process going. That basically signaled the end of McNabb in Minnesota.

Now McNabb has been waived and the small amount of speculation has begun on where he will go. He's 35 years old and on the decline of his career as his two teams after the Eagles have been far from great. Not sure who would want to claim McNabb. I would've said the Texans but they just doomed their team's hopes for good by grabbing Jake Delhomme. Maybe a team that needs a back up or something will be willing to give him a look.

Will McNabb ever start again in the NFL? Maybe if he's willing to play back up and wait for an injury. However, I don't see a team heading into a season with Donovan McNabb as their number one guy from here on out.
