Sean Payton to Appeal: Why?

After getting hit with a suspension for the entire 2012 NFL Season due to his role in Bounty Gate and covering it up, Sean Payton has decided that he will appeal the suspension that the league has handed him. As for who Payton's appeal will go to, it's the same person that handed it out in the first place: Roger Goodell. The commissioner apparently is also the guy who rules on appeals in this matter. Payton can technically stay on as head coach until the appeal fails. It also has been made known that Goodell will make the decision on the appeal within a matter of days, not weeks.

The Saints, meanwhile, have been looking for an interim head coach to fill in for Sean Payton what with the likely chance that he loses his appeal. Bill Parcells has been mentioned as he was the old mentor to Sean Payton. Parcells has said that he would consider the job if offered to him and could not simply ignore this kind of request outright. If he doesn't take the job, it seems it will likely go to someone within the organization.

To address the appeal, what's the point? I know Sean Payton has the right to appeal and perhaps he could put in a bit more team input this way but he will be turned down anyway. Also, in what way should Roger Goodell be allowed to play judge, jury, executioner and appellate judge? I'm starting to side with the upset players more and more about their feelings towards Roger Goodell. This guy, comparatively, has more power than President Obama. Goodell's powers need to be addressed.

As for the substitute coach, I don't think Bill Parcells will come back for the Saints. While I can't say for a certainty, I must say that he up there in age, doesn't want to wait longer for the Hall of Fame, and I think he would just want to stay retired. Sure, there might be a part of him that wants to coach but I don't think it's big enough to make any large life decision.

Mariners Win 2012 MLB Opener in Japan and My World Series Pick

It's sort of MLB opening day. Does it count when you can't even watch the game? I was up at 3:15 AM pacific wondering where to tune in and I couldn't find it on the guide. I could find the repeat of it on MLB TV but by then I was out. Anyway, the first game of the 2012 regular season was played earlier today in Japan between the Mariners and the A's and I must say that after that huge turnout maybe the A's should relocate to Tokyo. The Mariners would win this opener, 3-1 in 11 innings, with Ichiro going 4 for 5 with an RBI. The two teams will play another game the next day and then go back to the states for a few more exhibition games before resuming their season's. What kind of league allows this scheduling? Or the A's back in the country, for that matter?

So baseball is sort of under way and I guess now would be an appropriate time for picking my World Series teams. The AL seems like a hard league to guess at and looking at the Angels it's hard to pick against them. I do, however, have doubts on how well the team will do in the postseason, especially CJ Wilson. As much as I want the Red Sox, I can't pick them. They are going through a managerial change (in more than one way) as well as a change of management styles. The Tigers may have the great lineup but their pitching needs more support for Justin Verlander. My AL pick has to be the Yankees, unfortunately. My NL pick, unfortunately (for totally different reasons), has to be the Giants. The Phillies look a bit weaker than the Giants and no one in the NL Central looks like contenders as of now.

The winner? The Yankees. They now have a solid rotation coupled with still a strong lineup though weakened. Like every pick with the Yankees, I hope I'm wrong. See you all at the ballpark.

Magic's Group Buys the Dodgers

The LA Dodgers were a mess last year largely due to the fact that Frank McCourt and his divorce was consuming the team's finances and leaving them handicapped. As a result, Bud Selig and MLB took over the team and eventually forced Frank to put the Dodgers up for sale. There were many groups that stepped up to offer large amounts of money for the team and it seemed that three were pre-approved. It has been made known, however, that the Dodgers have been sold. The group that won was Guggenheim Baseball Management, which included Magic Johnson and Stan Kasten, has now bought the Dodgers for $2 Billion, a record for a sports franchise. McCourt bought the whole package a back in 2004 for about $300 million and now gets a huge profit.

If you are a Dodgers fan, you must be thrilled that Magic Johnson is now going to be the face of the Dodgers. He is perhaps the most popular figure (not just for sports) for the entirety of LA. Suck it, Brangelina. He will be well received without a doubt. $2 billion seems like a lot of money. I swear, it was just a few months ago that I read that the most valued sports franchise in the world was Manchester United and the numbers fell a couple hundred million short of the Dodgers deal. Makes you wonder what other sports franchises are really worth.

I can't really wish the Dodgers well being a Giants fan. But let's face it, the Dodgers were a joke the last couple of years and no franchise deserves that. Enjoy the time in the front office, Magic.

P.S. $2 Billion for the Dodgers? Man, did they get ripped off. BAZING!!!

2012 NL East Preview: Can Anyone Contend with the Phillies?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: The Phillies still have one of the best rotations in baseball. Of their starters, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee all had ERA's under 3 last year. No Roy Oswalt hurts them a bit but Oswalt last year seemed to slightly perform below team expectations. Plus, getting injured didn't help his case. Wonder where he will go? Their lineup seems slightly weakened but should still be respected. Hunter Pence gave them life but they will need a slight rebound from Ryan Howard to get back to a great lineup.

The team that took most of the offseason headlines in this division were the Marlins. The slight name change, moving into a new stadium, and getting new uniforms all almost took a backseat to their aggressive off season signings. Getting Jose Reyes and Mark Buerhle made a splash for them as they move. Sure there is some minor conflict between Reyes and Hanley Ramirez over who will play SS but this will be a minor glitch. Bottom line: their rotation has potential to be one of the best in baseball and their lineup can be too. The keyword here, however, is "potential."

Don't count out the Braves, however. This collapsed team still looks poised to make a playoff run. Their lineup might not look that great but their rotation is still very good. Plus, the team might rally around the fact that this will "supposedly" be Chipper Jones' last season. The Nationals quest to build a great team will continue through the 2012 season. Gio Gonzalez will definitely help but Stephen Strasburg will have to become a regular ace to get them close to October. As for the Mets, need I say more?

Sure the Phillies are the favorite but there is room for one of these teams to be in that Wild Card game at the end of the year. I think the Marlins can make a big leap into 2nd place in the division and make it into that game.

P.S. As for who wins the first NL Wild Card playoff game, my pick will be the Brewers. They are slightly more experienced than the Marlins players plus I think they will have the better record and play host.

2012 NL Central Preview: Albert's Gone... Prince Too

With Phat Albert no longer on the Cardinals and Prince Fielder no longer on the Brewers, the division opens up a little more. I can see a few competitors for the division title.

Let's first look at last year's division winners; the Brewers. No Prince Fielder hurts them but doesn't take them out of the running. They still have a pretty good rotation: Yovani Gallardo, Zach Greinke, Randy Wolf, and Shaun Marcum look solid. None of them were Cy Young material last year but combined they were great. While they don't have Prince Fielder in the lineup anymore, they still have Ryan Braun, the NL "got off a drug suspension" MVP. Plus, they also added Aramis Ramirez to the lineup. That along with Corey Hart makes them solid on offense as well.

Then what about the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals? Can't count them out. The return of Adam Wainwright o the rotation with Chris Carpenter somewhat makes up for the lost bat in Pujols. Plus the rest of the rotation is pretty good. They might be the best rotation in the division. Their lineup needs to make up a bit for Pujols' departure but I think they will be able to do it.

As for the rest of the division, I guess the Reds could surprise some people. Their rotation headed by Johnny Cueto will keep them in it provided he stays healthy. Their lineup could use a bit more help, though. The Pirates will likely improve but there big thing for this season is simply trying to break .500. The Cubs rotation looks alright but their lineup needs more help unless Starlin Castro can improve even more. As for the Astros, enjoy possibly the last year of sucking in the NL Central.

My Pick? I'm choosing the Cardinals. Pitching wins out and their rotation just seem better than everyone else's. This of course happens provided that Wainwright bounces back from his injury. I can see the Brewers being in that Wild Card game, though.

2012 NL West Preview: Last Giant Chance

Last year, I did the stupid thing of picking my favorite team(s) for the World Series. I think I will be safe picking one for a division, though.

The Giants were a disappointment last season coming off a world title. They were in it for most of the way but started to lose steam around early August and never could get it going again. The problem for us was no Buster Posey and no offense from anyone else. Sure, Pablo Sandoval had a much improved season last year but he needs to improve that On Base Percentage a bit more. Luckily, our rotation is still one of the best in baseball if not the best in baseball. Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are lead singer and guitarist with solid bass from Madison Bumgarner and a great drums from Ryan Vogelsong. I just wish they could get rid of that awful tambourine player (Zito).

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are their rivals for the West. Last year, they just wanted it more and still have a desire for a title. Ian Kennedy leads a rotation that is very impressive followed by Joe Saunders and Daniel Hudson. They are not to be underestimated. Their offense is also something to worry about. While the Giants suffered from being the 2nd worst run scoring team last year, the D'Backs managed to crack the top ten placing 9th in runs. Justin Upton and Chris Young seem like their biggest threats in the lineup.

And the rest of the West? The Dodgers are probably the next best team but they might take a step back this year because of the fact they are still up for sale. But you still got to watch out for Clayton Kershaw in that rotation, Matt Kemp in the lineup, and Andre Ethier to make a bounce back season. The Rockies have a good lineup but their rotation is a mess so they're out. As for the Padres, I expect a few showings of their camo alternate uniforms.

I will pick the Giants to take the division but I must say that this might be a last realistic chance for the Giants to win not just a division but a World Title for while. This is the last year of Matt Cain's contract and he might be gone. Also, Ryan Vogelsong's season last year was great but it seem to come out of now where and I'm a bit skeptical that he will be able to duplicate that kind of performance again. Also, he is in his mid 30's and he now shines? He doesn't have a lot of time left to do anything before retirement comes knocking. Our great rotation might not stand for much longer and our playoff hopes are likely to go with it.

Final Four Set: Kentucky Only #1 Left

Did Tiger win a Major? No? Moving along...

The Elite 8 is over and I officially look like an embarrassment. Of my Final Four Picks, only one made it and that was Kentucky. They played against Baylor yesterday and they just dominated them and won, 82-70. As for who they will face? An in state rival, believe it or not. Louisville beat Florida, 72-68, and will now take on Kentucky for next weekend. What a game that will be? Rick Pitino going against his old team and as part of a rivalry like this is phenomenal.

As for the other side of the bracket, both of the other #1's are out. Syracuse finally got eliminated in a officiating noted game vs. Ohio State, 77-70. I think the Orange surprised everyone with how far they got without their star player and I think this was still a good overall tournament for them. Too bad they're going home. For the Midwest regional final, UNC needed Kendall Marshall too much for this game. Kansas played well and ended this game on a 12-0 run winning, 80-67. The Jayhawks move on and will face Ohio State in the next round.

It's now time for the Final Four. Kentucky will play Louisville and Kansas will face Ohio State. Where are the chicken wings?

2012 AL West Preview: Heavenly Expectations

Now the biggest move of the off season involved a team from this division. Albert Pujols going to Angels made them a top pick of many throughout the country but are they my pick for the AL West?

The Angels do seem well suited for the upcoming season. Despite the fact that he's coming off career low numbers from last year, Pujols still looks very good with a .299 avg., 37 homers, and 99 RBI's. The thought will be, of course, that last year's numbers were partly affected by injury which was true to an extent. On top of Pujols, the team has added CJ Wilson to a seemingly impressive rotation of Dan Haren, Ervin Santana, and Jared Weaver. All four mentioned had ERA's under 3.5 last season with Weaver and Wilson being the two with ERA's actually under 3. If the rotation lives up to last season and Kendry Morales stays healthy, the Angels will no doubt take the Al West.

But don't ever count out the Rangers. They've managed to make it to the World Series two years in a row against the odds and just because they lose another solid pitcher from their rotation doesn't mean they are out of the running. They still have a great hitting line up and solid rotation with Derek Holland and Matt Harrison leading the way. Whether they will take the division or not away from the Angels will largely depend on Neftali Feliz and Yu Darvish. Feliz is transitioning from the Bullpen to a starting role and recent history involving these kinds of career moves doesn't bode well for him (or Daniel Bard for that matter). As for Yu Darvish, he'll have a tough time too considering he's coming from a different league, heck, country for that matter. If one of these two plays well this year, look for the Rangers to contend for the division. If they both do well, look for another trip to the World Series.

As for the other two teams in the division, I get confused. The A's made a lot of interesting moves this off season trading prospect talent away and getting aging talent like Manny Ramirez and Bartolo Colon. It just seems like that franchise is already looking forward to the next season... and the one after that, and the one after that... In Seattle, the Mariners once again look like the weak link in the division with just a bright spot in Felix Hernandez. I'd be surprised if they take the #3 spot in the division away from the A's.

So who am I picking? While I want to be a bit risky and say the Rangers for a second year in a row, I have to pick the Angels. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers make a fool of me come October but I'd be the fool right off if I didn't pick the team with Albert Pujols to win the division.

P.S. I still see the Rangers contending for the Wild Card and being involved in the first ever Wild Card playoff game. I see Red Sox winning that, though.

I Ain't Dancing Anymore... Neither is MSU

The Sweet 16 was not so sweet for me. Another one of my Final Four Picks have been eliminated. Marquette unfortunately got beat by Florida, 68-58. That's now two of my Final Four Picks eliminated. As for the rest of that day, the first #1 seed was swept away. Michigan State doesn't advance any further as Louisville beats them, 57-44. Embarrassing low for the Spartans as now Louisville will take on Florida in the next round. Another #1 seed was almost eliminated on the same day. #4 Wisconsin played Syracuse to the limit but the Orange survive a last attack, 64-63. They will now face Ohio State who just Cincy, 81-66.

As for yesterday's action, Kendall Marshall did not play for #1 seed UNC. As a result, the Tar Heels had to stave off Ohio. The game was tied at the end of regulation and it seemed like it was going to stay close in OT. The Tar Heels then finally got separation that lasted and won the game, 73-65. UNC's next opponent also had to hold on to a close game as #2 seed Kansas just beat NC State, 60-57. As for the match ups in the South bracket, no contest really. #1 seed Kentucky beat #4 Indiana in a high scoring affair, 102-90, and #3 Baylor managed to beat #10 Xavier, 75-70. Kentucky and Baylor will play against each other next.

We not move on to the Elite 8. Can't wait for this embarrassment to come to an end.

2012 AL Central Preview: Can Anyone Contend with the Tigers?

Time to preview the AL Central. The 2nd biggest move during the off season happened in this division and happened to what is, of course, the defending division champions and my favorite. Prince Fielder was acquired by the Tigers as they sought to make sure the loss of Victor Martinez wouldn't affect them this year... or for the next 8 years just in case. The big challenge will be getting Miguel Cabrera moved over from 1st base to 3rd base. So far the move hasn't passed the "Eye Test" but they have time. Of course the team could've used some more help in the pitching department but there wasn't really much to pick up this off season. Guess Justin Verlander will have to do again. Though Doug Fister looks like a solid #2.

As for the rest of the division, good luck. I have lost faith in Twins what with now a lack of pitching and Joe Mauer not being as good as advertised anymore. Also, when did Justin Morneau start to suck? I am excited to see if the Royals are any good this season. Jonathan Sanchez is now on the team and I want to see if he can now rebound after a rough season. Also want to see if the Indians are any good this time around. They can possibly rebound if Ubaldo Jimenez can suddenly become good again. Same goes for Derek Lowe. As for the White Sox, no Ozzie, no Mark Buerhle, not interested.

To sum up, look to the Tigers to make a playoff run while the rest of the division contend for the #2 spot. I'll be surprised if any of them even finish within 10 games of the Wild Card leaders.

Tebow Going to the Jets

Tebowmania is over in Denver. Well, it was over the minute Peyton said he wanted to go there but it's now officially over. Even if Peyton Manning were to suck the entire time in Denver, he would have at least done John Elway the favor of getting rid of Tebow. Elway has always wanted to get rid of Tebow and hated it when he was winning despite whatever he was repeating from the cue cards his therapist gave him. As for who got Tebow, it was a back and forth kind of day but it ended up being the Jets. The Jets will get Tebow and a 7th round Draft pick and the Broncos will get a 4th and 6th round pick in return.

First of all, so rooting against the Broncos. Elway never believed in Tebow and deserves several losing seasons for hating a guy who got your team into the playoffs. Second, what are the Jets thinking? They have chaos in the locker room already, they have to sign Mark Sanchez to an extension to try and convince the team they back him 100% (which wouldn't have worked anyway), and now they trade for the most controversial player/QB in the entire NFL. Is their goal to simply implode by midseason? The personalities of Jets/Rex Ryan and Tim Tebow do not mix what so ever and when the Jets start to slump, you'll now have Jets' fans chanting for Tebow to take over behind center... or in shotgun.

The above is the worst case scenario and likely to happen. The best case? The humble Tim Tebow gets the team away from the Rex Ryan's "we are the greatest" BS and gets them working as a team again. This team, however, doesn't need a slice of humble pie, they need a whole bakery of it. Good luck in New Jersey, Tebow.

Bounty Gate gets Huge Penalties

With bounty gate being the scandal of the year, everyone knew that the penalties for this offense were going to be big. The New Orleans Saints were just hoping that they could survive this and be able to contend for the upcoming season. Well the penalties have now been given and it's mainly suspensions all around. GM Mickey Loomis has been banned for 8 games, assistant coach Joe Vitt for six games, Greg Williams, the former DC who now works for the Rams, is suspended indefinitely, and lastly head coach Sean Payton suspended for the entire 2012 NFL season. The team was also hit with a $500,000 fine and stripped of their 2nd round draft pick for this year and the following.

Very harsh penalties for the Saints and a huge statement to the rest of the league. Most of the these penalties do seem a bit harsh to me but once you read about Payton's role you would understand the NFL's reaction as well. I still think the big reason the league had to come down hard what not necessarily what the Saints did but for the image of the NFL. They are "trying" to portray themselves as a humane game, especially through the concussion lawsuits that are pending, and they have to come down hard on anyone that breaks this image.

Whatever the real reason for the penalties, they are harsh and will cripple the Saints for the following year.

P.S. Drew Brees, sucks to be tagged.

2012 AL East Preview: Please Let it Be the Sox...

The 2012 MLB Season is around the corner and it's time for me to look at each division and give you my prediction for each one. We start with the AL East.

You can't look at the AL East without first thinking about the collapse of the Red Sox which lead to a new manager and a new GM (what with the old one leaving us). With Bobby Valentine now leading the Sox, they look to come into the season with a new attitude and better results. What killed the team last year were the disastrous start and finish to the season. Look to Sox to learn from this lesson and come out of the gates running. Also look to Carl Crawford to improve or else...

As for the team that swooped us, the Rays, you can't ever seem to count these guys out. They just seem to always be in it. Their starters seem to be in top shape and that makes them a contender alone. Also, when did Carlos Pena go back on the team? The real contender to the nation and my division favorite, unfortunately, are the Yankees. While their offense is a bit overrated, their pitching isn't. The addition of Hiroki Kuroda to CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova makes them not just a division favorite, but, of course, a World Series contender.

What about the Jays and the Orioles? Nice new hats?

P.S. While my gut tells me the Yankees will take the division, I think the Red Sox will claim the Wild Card and push for the division. They are too good to miss the playoffs two seasons in a row.

Smith and 49ers Reconcile

When the 49ers failed to acquire Peyton Manning, the worry was that the team would have to start over at QB with Alex Smith moving on to something else. It seemed like a bad breakup between a pair of individuals when one party thought they could do better and the other had their feelings hurt and thought they could get into a rebound relationship. It turns out that they couldn't do better than each other. Alex Smith's trip to Miami proved futile as the Dolphins signed David Garrard to a one year deal instead. So, as it turns out, the two sides decided to get back together and reports indicate that Smith has agreed to a 3 year deal with the 49ers.

Thank goodness. I thought this whole disaster was going to leave the 49ers scrambling for a new QB or having to throw in an inexperienced Colin Kaepernick. With Smith returning, perhaps they can improve the offense what with an actual off season together and a returning offensive coordinator for once. It can also improve with new WR's in Mario Manningham and, hopefully, a behaved Randy Moss. Smith will never reach Peyton's level but last year he showed that he can lead this team to great places. Good luck to the 49ers in off season preparations.

P.S. While I didn't think the 49ers should've pursued Manning, I don't hold it against them for trying and neither should Smith. They were simply doing what would've been clearly in the best interest of the team.

Now What for Tim Tebow?

The most talked about player last year was by far and away Tim Tebow of the Denver Broncos. Despite his severe handicap of not being able to play QB, he succeeded enough get into the playoffs and even get a playoff win over the Steelers. Going into the offseason, the team said that Tim Tebow was the starter. What they forgot to add on to that statement was "... until we find an actual QB to lead our team." In the Peyton Manning fiasco, the Broncos ended up with Manning leaving the question of what to do with... and before even finishing that question, sources say they will look to trade Tebow once Manning is signed.

So where is Tim Tebow going to go now? Early predictions seem to indicate the Jaguars as a likely destination with the Dolphins also in the running. He would be an attraction for either team and Tebow owns the state of Florida. But this isn't really going to help either team in the long term, only with short term and finances. Quite frankly, I don't see where else Tim Tebow could go. He might actually end up unemployed. Or he could end up on the Pats as some sort of QB/FB hybrid.

Wherever Tebow goes, it's going to be a circus and he will immediately be the focal point of that franchise. Does any of the 32 really want that?

49ERS ARE F**K!!!

With Peyton Manning going to Denver, this means bad things for San Francisco. I thought the 49ers were going to do the "loyal" move and stick with Alex Smith and not pursue Manning. Instead, they looked at the greener grass and said they wanted that while letting their old grass rot. While pursuing Manning, Alex Smith must've gotten mad by it and it now looks like he is trying to move on. He went to talk to the Dolphins for a bit over the weekend. Manning, meanwhile, didn't go to the 49ers, he went to the Broncos. Now the 49ers are left with no QB to turn to presuming that Alex Smith doesn't want to hear our apologies.

WHAT THE HELL DO WE DO NOW!!! We went to the NFC Title game last year and were two costly mistakes from going to the Super Bowl. Now it seems like we won't get anywhere near there this upcoming season. Alex Smith is not close to Peyton Manning but his clutch performance against the Saints were the reason we got to play in the NFC Title game. He deserves to come back but now it seems likely he won't. Now we might have to turn to our drafted QB from last year's draft: Colin Kaepernick. I hesitate with him, though, because I don't know if this kid is ready to take the reins of a team that got that close to a Super Bowl.

If I'm in the front office of the 49ers, I'm going to Alex Smith, getting on my hands and knees, and begging him to come back. Otherwise, our immediate future is bleak.

Manning Going to Mile High

Since the retirement of John Elway, the Denver Broncos have been looking for a replacement to their greatest QB ever. They kept going through QB's and just never could get it right. Well 10 QB's and Tim Tebow later the Broncos have their guy to make another Super Bowl run.

Peyton Manning has spent more than a week looking at teams and destinations for him to play ball ever since the Colts officially released him. He was courted by basically half the league looking for a new QB: Arizona, Seattle, Miami to name a few. But now it was down to three: San Francisco, Tennessee, and Denver. San Francisco would've be great because it was the strongest team available and Tennessee would've been great as it's a second home to Manning. But it was neither of those teams. Instead, Manning opts for Denver, Colorado to play for the Broncos at Mile High.

To be honest, I'm a little mystified with this move. I know Denver was a real possibility and for good reason but how do you turn down the 49ers and/or the Titans. The 49ers give you the best chance to win the Super Bowl right now. They have a great defense, a great offensive line, a great running game, and a receiver core that was just made better with Mario Manningham and possibly Randy Moss. As for the Titans, it's a second home where your wife is from and where you played college.

Denver winning in the final three doesn't make sense to me. It's in the mountains in a extremely different climate to what Manning is used to (indoors), their receiver core isn't as good as I think some people think they are (Van), John Fox has always been more successful with run oriented offenses, and I think their defense, while great, does flip flop periodically. All this combined with the fact that the 49ers are available to pick just stumps me.

I'll admit there is bias here considering I'm a 49ers fan but every analyst I have listened to has said that the 49ers of the three were the best option for Manning if he wanted to win a Super Bowl. I'm not saying that he can't win one in Denver because he can. He pulled a bunch of dead horses in Indianapolis for a long time, he could do it again for the Broncos. I'm just saying it's baffling. I guess Manning really doesn't want to win.

P.S. I have a weird feeling inside of me. I feel... like... I'm rooting for Raiders.

Matt Flynn Going to Where the Sun Don't Shine...

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON!!!

After performing admirably in a couple of regular season games over the last couple of seasons, Matt Flynn was expected to be a free agent QB that would be looked at by a few teams to possibly lead their franchises. One of those teams where the Miami Dolphins. Current Coach, Joe Philbin, was the OC for the Packers for the last few seasons and has gotten to know Matt Flynn. Matt was talking to the Dolphins but it apparently didn't work out. Why? Matt Flynn has agreed to a 3 year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, that's why.

Seattle definitely needs a QB and since Peyton Manning is out, Matt Flynn seems like a good 2nd option. If he works out, he will last much longer than Manning will. As for WR's, not much around him. Just seems to be Sidney Rice being the top talent. The Seahawks still need to rebuild a bit more but Matt Flynn is a nice to start to that process.

P.S. I know the title is the oldest joke in the book but it's still funny.

Round Two is Over and My Team is Out

The second round of the tournament is over (3rd round if you're a dick) and there have been a couple more surprises. One of which is #11 NC State beating #3 Georgetown, 66-63. The other is that my choice for a champion is out. #6 Cincinnati eliminated #3 Florida State (my pick), 62-56. Sloppy mistakes at the end doomed the Seminoles and made me look like a fool for picking them. Live and learn, I guess.

As for the other games, both of the upstarts have been eliminated. After defeating their respective #2 seed opponents, #15 Lehigh and Norfolk State have been beaten. Florida destroyed Norfolk state, 84-50, and Xavier beat Lehigh, 70-58. Sad to see these great possible story lines end so soon. Even last year's Cinderella, VCU, was eliminated when they were beaten by Indiana, 63-61.

All the #1 seeds managed to move on. Perhaps the "one" that is seeing red, however, is UNC as they lost one of their big players in their win over Creighton, 87-73. Kendall Marshall now has a broken wrist and now everyone is questioning whether or not he will be able to play for any of the remainder of the tournament or how effective he will be.

Well the Sweet 16 is set for next weekend and it's sure to be very entertaining. As for the #1 seeds, UNC will face #13 Ohio, MSU will take on #4 Louisville, Kentucky will take on #4 Indiana, and Syracuse will face #4 Wisconsin. While FSU is out, my other Final Four picks are still alive.

First Round of Tourney Over: Upsets All Around

The NCAA tournament began and day one seemed rather droll. #1 seed Kentucky got by their #16 seed opponent, Western Kentucky, defeating them 81-66. It wasn't that easy for another #1 as Syracuse barely got by UNC-Asheville 72-65. Looks like they need a Melo more than the Knicks do. The rest of the day seemed rather predictable. The only upsets to some extent were VCU beating Wichita State 62-59 and Colorado defeating UNLV 68-64.

Now what about the yesterday? It seemed like the opposite. While the other number one seeds won their games, the 2 seeds had some problems. First, #15 Norfolk State, had a huge upset win over #2 Missouri, 86-84. It wasn't done there. #15 Lehigh decided they wanted to play as David too and defeated their Goliath. They faced #2 Duke and managed to hold on and win, 75-70. Big deals for both universities as these wins were their first wins ever in the tournament. It was also the first win by any #15 seed over a #2 in 11 years and the first time ever two #2 seeds were eliminated by #15 seeds on the same day. Don't worry about #2 Kansas, though. Detroit put up a fight but eventually succumbed to Kansas, 65-50.

These were not the only upsets of the day. #13 Ohio University (not state) went up against #4 Michigan and won, 65-60. Just couldn't hit the three's at the end there. #12 USF managed to upset #5 Temple, 58-44. #10 Xavier faced Notre Dame and got the win, 67-63. Another #10 got a win, as well, when Purdue faced #7 St. Mary's and won, 72-69. To wrap up, #11 North Carolina State upset #6 SDSU, 79-65.

Right now, Brackets everywhere are being torn up in frustration. The 2nd round begins today and upset alert is going to Syracuse as they now face K-State.

Dwight Will Stay?

This whole Dwight Howard drama is over with a gigantic thump. Or you can see it as delayed for one more season.

With the trade deadline approaching, there was a lot of speculation that Howard was going to be dealt from the Orlando Magic to another team. Howard said he wanted to stay on the team till the end of the season and then make a decision. That wasn't good enough for the Magic and wanted Howard waive his option coming up that would make him a free agent a season earlier. It seemed to be a stare down and Howard blinked. Dwight Howard has proven his "loyalty" and agreed to sign a waiver that essentially terminates the option to leave the team this summer. That means Superman will stay in Orlando for another year.

I'm a bit confused by this whole thing. It was clearly in Dwight's best interest to wait out this season and decide to play in Brooklyn next year with Deron Williams or find a new team with a fighting chance. Instead he decides to put off the inevitable for a year and give the Magic one more shot in finding some pieces to put around him. If championships are Dwight's goal more than money or Disneyworld, this risk sacrifices another year of his time that he has that he could be using to try and win elsewhere. If the Magic can't get anyone else to help out, he would've wasted a year for nothing.

That's one reason for this move. Or could this whole thing be as simple as Dwight Howard not wanting to be the next LeBron James. Before "The Decision," LeBron was one of the most loved players in the league and perhaps the most watched player. After taking his talents to South Beach, he basically become Public Enemy #1. Dwight sees this and is perhaps trying to figure out a way to keep his popularity and get out of Orlando. One way to do that is to stay in Orlando for another year, play the loyalty card, and then, when the team can't field a decent contender around him, leave with the excuse that he gave them a fair shake for the world to see. Yes, this popularity/image excuse does seem weak compared to wanting to win titles but you also have to consider the financial aspects. More popularity means more endorsement deals.

Whatever the reason for Dwight staying, I'm Orlando will appreciate the move... for now.

EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!!!

It's time for the Madness once more. The NCAA Tournament is back. Of course I did a lot of research for this... YEAH RIGHT!!!

Like everyone else, I'm totally guessing. Before I show my hand, let's review on what has happened so far this college basketball season. Peyton Manning attended a Duke-UNC rivalry game. Now that we got that out of the way, let's preview this tournament a bit. The four number 1 seeds are Syracuse, UNC, Michigan State, and Kentucky. Of the four, UNC seems to be the strongest.

As for my picks, I got #1 Kentucky coming out of the South, #3 Marquette out of the West, #1 UNC out of the Midwest, and #3 Florida State out of the East. As for my title game, I got Florida State beating Kentucky, 58-55. I think the Seminoles are hot right now just winning the SEC tournament beating both UNC and Duke. I have to go with the hot team for this tourney.

Tournament does start today where one seeds Kentucky and Syracuse will play their respective games. Good luck to everyone and may there be a Cinderella.

P.S. President Obama has UNC winning the whole thing, the team he was right about in 2009. A safe pick like his policies. BAZING!!!

From Linning to Melodrama; D'Antoni Resigns

Remember the days when Jeremy Lin was the toast of Wall Street and everyone said that the team would be just fine when Carmelo Anthony returned? Can I slap those people now?

I admit I was one of those guys that was sucked into the Linsanity and thought it could go somewhere. But there was always something in my mind that gave me pause to think that this would work when Melo returned to the court. Since Melo's return, the Knicks have only won two games and have now lost 6 in a row. They are currently 18-24 and don't look anywhere close to making a playoff run. In the midst of all of it were rumors that Melo wanted out of New York and/or he wanted D'Antoni gone. Today he got one of those wishes even if he denies the rumor. Mike D'Antoni has resigned as head coach of the Knicks. This move was apparently mutually agreed upon.

Believe it or not, I feel sorry for D'Antoni. He never had a chance in New York with that organization around him and Melo forced upon him. I don't think he's close to the best coach out there but I feel like he could've done better in New York. His craziness was working when it was up to the non-stars which gave Jeremy Lin a chance to shine in the first place. Amare Stoudemire could've worked in that system as well. Carmelo Anthony, however, could not. He didn't buy into D'Antoni's system and did his own selfish thing. Carmelo is the reason why D'Antoni isn't there anymore and no one else.

If I was a Knick a fan, I would be steamed that a star player that I wanted is bringing my team down. Melo is too much of a diva to listen to any regular coach out there. Find a coach that has won some titles and he might listen.

Is This the End of Dwight in Orlando?

As the trade deadline nears for the NBA, analysts are asking if the biggest asset possibly available will be traded from Orlando. This dance between management and Dwight Howard has been going for a while. The team will listen for offers then doesn't, Dwight wants to go then wants to stay; it's been getting old. The latest news is that the Magic are trying to hold on to Dwight Howard and are trying to do so by trading for another star player to play ball with him. The target on everyone's mind was Monta Ellis of the Golden State Warriors. That target has already been claimed. The Warriors traded away Monta Ellis to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.

Now I could talk about how this strengthens both sides but quite frankly I'm not good of an NBA analyst. I must say that this trade looks good for the Bucks as they can now make a playoff push. But the big picture part of me now says this is the end of Dwight Howard in Orlando. Now that's not for sure but from what the rumor mill is producing, if the Magic failed in acquiring a star player for Dwight, then they were going to shop him around. With the trade deadline looming, they better move quick. There are plenty of suitors, of course, ranging from the lowly Nets that want another big star to go alongside Darren Williams for when they move into Brooklyn next year, to the Chicago Bulls who could potentially get by the Heat come playoff time instead of losing when the team just looks to Derrick Rose to win games.

I'm not sure what would be best for Dwight Howard but I would look into that Bulls option if you wanted to win right now.

P.S. Or you could stay in Orlando like you just said while this team is hot and see what they can do while knowing deep inside that it won't win you a title.

Jackson to Bucs and Marshall to Bears

Okay, now it's official. The 2012 NFL season has begun and with some notable deals and none of them have the name "Manning" attached. First, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sign Vincent Jackson to a 5 year deal worth $55 million. Seems like a good move for the Bucs. There was another big move involving a WR but this involved a trade, not a signing. The Bears manage to trade for Brandon Marshall, the old WR of Jay Cutler in Denver, in exchange for two 3rd round draft picks (2012 and 2013) which now go to the Dolphins. Seems like the Bears will be valid in 2012.

So, which is the bigger deal? Both moves seem like great moves but it's a bigger deal for the Bears. While Vincent Jackson might have more of an impact in Tampa Bay and help them more in rebuilding that team for a potential playoff run, Brandon Marshall going to Chicago makes them a Super Bowl Contender. The Bears seemed like a solid playoff team last year until Cutler got hurt. With a good WR to throw to, and a familiar face, this will make them more effective on offense.

I'm excited to see what these players can bring to their new teams. These moves might not get either team to ultimately where they want to go but they are big steps in the right direction.

P.S. Does this trade affect Miami's chances of getting Peyton Manning?

Moss to the 49ers? NO!!!

I would like to thank Harbaugh for a great playoff run. It was fun while it lasted.

Why do I sound pessimistic? BECAUSE THE TEAM IS GOING TO SIGN RANDY MOSS, THAT'S WHY!!! I admit that WR's is something the 49ers lack. In the postseason, it was basically Vernon Davis, a TE, as the only valid target for Alex Smith. We definitely need help at WR. But Randy Moss? Moss worked out with Jim Harbaugh and the two seemed to get along. So much so that the 49ers are now going to sign Randy Moss to a one year deal. Moss just turned 35 and just came out of retirement taking the last season off.

Why are we ruining a good thing? Randy Moss is not the answer. He isn't as good as he once was, he'll be a bit rusty when he returns, and, worst of all, he has a attitude problem that any diva would be jealous of. Does anyone remember why two teams traded him away in one season? It's because of his attitude and how he affects the mood of a team. He plays when he wants to and no one tells him otherwise.

Do people change? Perhaps they do. But Randy Moss is too much of a risk in my opinion. He may help spread the field for Alex but he may also help kill the momentum.

2012 MLS Season is Here

MLS has returned and the nonexistent coverage along with it. This is the first weekend of games so far and they seem alright to say the least. The one notable thing that stands out is the fact that Real Salt Lake beat the Galaxy and crushed their title celebration, 3-1. RSL is still a force to be reckoned this season. Also, the league's newest team (19th member), the Montreal Impact, made their debut yesterday as they lost to the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-0.

So, real quick, who's going to hoist the MLS Cup this season? I have my doubts that the Galaxy will repeat so I'm not picking them. The Red Bulls seem too obvious and I think Thierry Henry is overrated. I would love to pick Real Salt Lake but I have to go with the Seattle Sounders. I'm no expert when it comes to soccer and I can't keep up with MLS all the time so this is more of a hunch kind of guess. Seattle was in second place last year in the Western Conference but got eliminated Real Salt Lake. Let's hope they do better this season. How could you not with that loud fan base behind them.

Redskins Get 2nd Pick in NFL Draft (Basically RG3)

With the Colts owning the first pick in the Draft and essentially Andrew Luck, the next big issue was who was going to pick 2nd overall in the draft and essentially grab Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. The Rams who own the pick said they wanted to trade it away and have been talking to potential buyers for a while trying to get the best deal. They have now got a deal for the 2nd overall pick and what a deal it is. Though the transaction cannot be made official until the league year officially starts on Tuesday, it has been reported that the Washington Redskins have won the rights to RG3. The Redskins get the 2nd overall pick while the Rams get the Redskins' 1st round pick in this year's draft, the 2013 draft, the 2014 draft, and the Redskins' 2nd round pick in this year's draft.

What a deal for the Rams. Three first round draft picks over the next three drafts, including this year's one, along with a 2nd round pick? I'm sure they and the St. Louis are quite happy with what they got or will get. As for the Redskins, big gamble here for the franchise. They are giving away a good chunk of their future for one guy. Sure, RG3 looks good and can play ball... in college. But no matter how good a player seems to be, there is always a chance that a player is a bust. I'll admit that I'm no talent scout and if the Redskins think that this guy is their future then go right ahead and take him. But it just seems like too much of a risk for one guy.

Peyton Manning and the Colts Officially Part Ways

For 14 seasons, Peyton Manning was the Colts. He carried that team for most of that time and help make football the biggest thing in the state. He won MVP's, a Super Bowl, and put up Hall of Fame numbers while there. That is all over now.

Almost every analyst and commentator predicted this back in the fall of 2011. Peyton Manning missed the entire 2011 NFL Season due to a neck injury. As a result, the Colts stunk with a 2-14 record which was bad enough for the first pick in the Draft. Luckily for them, the next supposed "Franchise QB" was going to be available in the upcoming draft. The thought then was that the team was going to let Manning go and pick up the new guy.

It is now March and the presumption has been proven correct. Earlier today, their was a press conference held by Owner Jim Irsay and Peyton Manning announcing that the Colts were going to release Manning from the team. Manning was emotional and Irsay was a bit as well. Manning thanked the fans of the Colts for all the support over the years. Irsay actually said as part of his statement "There will be no other Peyton Manning."

The two parties have broken up. Now what? The Colts will undoubtedly draft and sign Andrew Luck, of course, and rebuild their team around him for the next few seasons. What about Peyton Manning, pick where you want to go. About half the league would love to have you as QB but only a few teams would it actually make sense. Among those are the 49ers. It would be a dream for Manning to come play in San Francisco as this team was just a couple of mistakes from the Super Bowl. However, they are committed to keeping Alex Smith as their QB. Still not sure which choice would be the right choice but keeping Smith is what they will do.

So where will Manning end up? I'm leaning toward out in division rivals in Arizona. It's a dome, their team is solid but not great, and they have one of the best WR's to throw to in Larry Fitzgerald. Plenty of other teams have been mentioned like the Dolphins, the Broncos, and even the Texans but to me the Cardinals make the most sense.

Of course, no one is certain where Manning will end up but I know where he won't go: the New York Jets. Who wants to come aboard that sinking ship?

P.S. Now that I think about it, the 49ers must pursue Manning if my prediction holds true. The 49ers, who were so close to ultimate glory, cannot afford to be set back by Peyton Manning being in the same division as we they are.

New Castle Commissioned for Sacramento

Someone call forth the peasants and the serfs: we have a citadel to build. We'll, it would be more closer to a coliseum, really.

The last few years, there has been speculation that the Kings (of the NBA) would be leaving the state capitol of California, Sacramento. They have wanted a new arena deal from the city in the past but were always unable to get it. With one more last ditch year to keep the team in the city, Sacramento will keep the Kings. Last night, the city council approved to help finance a new arena with an estimated cost of $391 million. Mayor Kevin Johnson manages to keep the Kings in the city and give them a new arena downtown.

If you live in Sacramento, you must be feeling pretty happy the only big professional team in staying in town. This city is not thought of highly that often and it's nice this relatively small market manages to hold on to their team. A good move for the city and their economy overall but the team still needs much improvement to be relevant. An new arena, however, keeps the money flowing in order for them to get that done.

P.S. Too bad, Seattle. I was rooting for you.

Saints and Sinners: What the NFL Really Is

A somewhat shocking scandal has hit the NFL. It has been revealed that the Saints organization has been involved in Bounties. On top of friendly pools for making key plays during games throughout the season, there was also a bounty system set up which players could essentially be paid for taking players on other teams out of the game by injuring them. Terms like "knock out" and "stretcher" have been used to describe bounties issued.

Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator for the Saints the last couple of seasons, has not only admitted that this was true but also admitted to participating in it. Williams apparently met with the league today about the issue. Now speculation starts as to how many others in the organization were involved including whether or not Sean Payton, the head coach, was involved. Penalties for this could be serious from loss of draft picks to long term suspensions.

How does something like this happen... without letting Boba Fett in on it? He's the best bounty hunter in the galaxy and no one called him up? Give me a break.

On a more serious note, this bounty story is awful and scandalous for the league. Even though the amounts listed are relatively small for the most part, it's the principal of the matter and that someone is actually offering money to physically injure someone while playing a game. The ironic part is that football is a violent sport anyway and players are being paid tons of money to make big hits anyway for their teams while trying to win a game strategically.

Let's just cut the BS for a second. Football simply is a barbaric sport made for people who like to make big hits and for spectators who like to watch while they do so. They're basically somewhat lessened gladiators with an emperor (Goodell) watching over them deciding when someone has had enough. Now the league has tried to cut back on these devastating hits and injuries like head shots and concussions in order to make the league presentable and humane.

This bounty story, however, exposes the league for what it really is: a bunch of people paid lots of money to hit each other as hard as they can. Naturally, the league must attack it head on to keep fans and the general audience from thinking this way.

Williams Nets 57, Kobe and Lakers get Some Revenge, and Celtics Stiffle the Knicks

It was actually a good Sunday for basketball. Don't get used to that statement from me. Top performance of the day and probably the weekend comes from the Darren Williams of the Nets. In a game against the Charlotte Bobcats, Darren Williams proved why he is premier PG. In the 104-101 win for the Nets, Williams scored 57 Points going 16-29 from the floor and shooting a perfect 21-21 from the free throw line. He also had 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Williams just destroyed the NBA's worst team and made his presence known once more.

Another great performance from last night came from Kobe Bryant. So far in his dual persona as Phantom of the Staples Center, he has lit up teams taking his broken nose and concussion frustrations out on them. Yesterday he took it out on the player who caused it: Dwayne Wade. How did he do that? By beating Wade's team, of course. The Lakers beat the Hear, 93-83, as Kobe scored 33 points in this game. This mask thing for Kobe might just be helping.

The last game I'll mention from last night is the Knicks vs. the Celtics. Once again, the Knicks had the chance to go above .500 and once again they failed. Jeremy Lin had a fair game with 14 points and 5 assists but he also had 6 turnovers. That has to change in order for this team to get better. Carmelo Anthony was keeping the Knicks in it and almost won it if it wasn't for Paul Pierce's late three to force OT. The Celtics would gain the advantage and win it in OT, 115-111. Rajon Rondo was the big reason for the win with 18 points, 20 assists, and 17 rebounds. Now that's a Point Guard.

Some fine performances from these players show that there is plenty of excitement around the NBA for basketball fans and even some for me.

Chelsea Fires Villas-Boas

The season for Chelsea F.C. had been a roller-coaster to say the least. However, their highs this season haven't really hit anywhere close to "Best in the EPL" mark. In the EPL, Chelsea seemed on the decline. Just this weekend, Chelsea lost to West Bromwich Albion, 1-0, and fell to 5th on the table. If the team was to finish outside of the top 4, they would not be in the Champions league next season. Due to that and perhaps their disappointing first leg against Napoli in the UCL, Chelsea have fired their manager, Andre Villas-Boas. The club and club owner, Roman Abramovich, now will look for the 8th manager in 9 years.

Conflicting styles with the players and poor results by Chelsea standards cost Villas-Boas his job. There must be a lot of pressure to come to a new club and be expected to maintain a high level of play on the pitch. Does any coach anywhere get a fair amount of time to mold a team in their image? I guess not. The sports world nowadays expects instant and positive results. There's seemingly no patience anymore.

I'm sure Villas-Boas will get a new manager job somewhere else and he will learn from this experience. As for Chelsea, things do not look good at the present time.

Tag, Brees is It

Doesn't feel so great when a QB gets tag, uh?

The Saints and Drew Brees were trying to reach a new deal for the long term in order for Drew to stay in New Orleans. Right now, Brees isn't going anywhere, at least in the short term. The Saints applied the exclusive rights franchise tag on Brees and will now have the QB for another year as they try to sort out a long term deal in the process. As for current negotiations on that deal, the team and Brees are still a few million apart.

At least the Saints will be relevant for next season. Problem is that they used possibly the biggest dick move an owner has in order to do it. I'm sure that Brees wants to stay with the team but he wants to be paid a fair amount. Instead of the Saints being fair, they said he was a "very good" QB (not great) and tagged him instead. What the hell is wrong with the Saints? Before Drew came to town, your playoff history was pratically nonexistent. He helps you win a Super Bowl and you low ball him? Not cool, Saints.

Maybe I am hyping this situation more than deserved. Maybe the two sides will be able to reach an agreement within the coming weeks and this will just be a bump in the road. But this is still not the way to treat a "great" QB like Drew Brees.

One Tagged, the Other Not

The big story that everyone wants to follow in the NFL off season is where Peyton Manning going to end up. I still don't have a answer but I do have some off season news elsewhere. There have been a couple of stories when it comes to the use of franchise tags in the NFL. In Philadelphia, the Eagles are slapping their tag on DeSean Jackson claiming that it will help keep him on the team for the long term. The other story is in the same state but in Pittsburgh with the Steelers as they say they will not slap the tag on Mike Wallace, a WR, and will try to sign him instead. Maybe if the Steelers didn't play it so close to the Salary Cap the story would be different.

From an owner standpoint, tagging Jackson is the best move at the moment. It doesn't help you long term that much if you have an upset player, especially if that player will hold out for a contract come August. The Eagles have plenty of problems to worry about. They don't need an angry WR to be one of them. As for the Steelers, not much to say here. They will try to sign Wallace and keep him by clearing some cap space but now there is a chance that they'll lose him in his restrictive free agency (I think).

Interesting bits of news here regarding franchise tagging. Still waiting for something on Peyton.

P.S. Also, Hines Ward gets released by the Steelers. Is he too old for the team or is it part of clearing cap space? Either way, good luck finding a new team, Hines.

Is Rondo Getting Traded or Not?

With the trade deadline fast approaching, many possible trades are being discussed around the league. Is Dwight Howard going to get traded? What about Darren Williams of the Nets? Also, can I get a Queen for my Pawn that reached the other side? One player that might get traded and is being talked about is Rajon Rondo of the Celtics. This, however, is confusing. One minute the organization seems to shopping him around the league; the next minute Doc Rivers is saying he's confident that he'll stay and Danny Ainge is backing him up.

What is the deal, then? It's possible it's just rumor gone too far or just speculation on part of some sources. It's possible that the team was seeing what they could get for him to weigh their options and decided that it wasn't worth pursuing. It's also possible that there was a miscommunication between management and Doc Rivers that warranted the statements recently made. My bet is that Rondo is still available and that the team just wants to save face for the fans sake.

Will Rondo get traded or not? I would like to say he will. Rondo apparently has butted heads with the organization and the Celtics might want their future around this guy. The Celtics just have to press the reset button and try to organize a new team for years to come.
