Djokovic Wins 2012 Aussie Open

I thought it only appropriate to have this be the longest procrastinated post for the longest match ever in Grand Slam Final history. OK, I forgot it altogether. You happy now.

Anyway, a couple days ago, Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open by beating Rafael Nadal in five sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5. It was the longest match in Grand Slam Final history as stated earlier. It lasted for 5 hours and 53 minutes. Of course it did. Novak Djokovic takes forever to make a serve. Anyway, this is Djokovic's fifth Grand Slam title and his 3rd Australian Open Title. Most of these have actually happened in the past year or so as Novak has won 4 of the last 5 Grand Slam events. He is dominating with only one Grand Slam left to conquer: the French Open.

Anyway congrats to Novak. When the French Open comes around in the spring he will have a chance to win all four Grand Slams within a non calender year. He will also have a chance to complete his Career Grand Slam.

This Just In: Victoria Azarenka Wins 1st Grand Slam Title

The first Grand Slam of the year is here and almost over. It's the Australian Open, of course. The Men's final is tomorrow morning but this morning was the women's final (over there it's night time). Maria Sharapova seemed like the favorite going into the final having won three Grand Slam Titles before. Her opponent didn't seem to care one bit. After having a somewhat shaky first couple of games, Victoria Azarenka came back and dominated the match. Everything that Sharapova (and the judges, it seemed like) could throw at her she seemed to shoot right back. Azarenka seemed like the champion tonight. She wins the match and her first Grand Slam title in two sets 6-3, 6-0.

Congratulations to Azarenka on her first Grand Slam title. It's always nice to have a first time Grand Slam winner and also different winners. Maybe too different. Over the last 5 Grand Slams, there have been 5 different winners on the women's side with Azarenka being the latest. There might be a #1 ranked (it's soon to be Azarenka) in the world but there doesn't seem to be a true dominant #1 out there.

Maybe this is a transition in domination in women's tennis. But it isn't about that now, it's about Azarenka. Enjoy the moment, Victoria. You seem to be happy to be holding that trophy on stage.

P.S. Just saying that the posting time listed is usually when I started to write the post not when I'm done with it.

P.P.S. CAN I HAVE A DONUT, VICTORIA!!!

WHO THE F**K IS GREG SCHIANO?!?!?!

I had to look this guy up. Wikipedia responded with "who?" I managed to find out that Greg Schiano was the Rutgers football coach since 2001. He seemed to be doing pretty well since 2005. I guess his new job is signs of things really going well. Schiano is saying adios to Rutgers and hello to Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers have hired Greg Schiano as their new head coach. This of course comes after Raheem Morris was fired three weeks ago after finishing the season 4-12 as the Bucs head coach.

This is without a doubt the surprise hire of the year. It's hard to imagine where the Bucs are coming from with hiring this guy. Now Schiano has had some good redeeming seasons with the Scarlet Knights and has gotten them winning again but it still seems like a head scratcher. Maybe Glazer thought a man who improved a weak program to begin with was better than one who had a good one to start with (or a former head coach in the NFL). I do hope that this job works for Schiano and that the Bucs thrive from it. They embarrassed my butt this last season.

DC's Now Head Coaches

More head coaching changes were finalized in the NFL in the last couple of days. First, the vacancy in Oakland has been filled, hopefully for a while. The Raiders have hired their third different Head Coach in the last three years and it is the Broncos defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen. The other coaching hire was for the Colts as the they hired the defensive coordinator of the Ravens, Chuck Pagano. Two defensive coordinators get head coaching jobs but Pagano seems to have a bit more coaching experience.

Which seems like the bigger deal? The Pagano hiring, of course. It's a bit of a insight into what the Colts are planning to do with Peyton Manning. OK, not the hiring itself but the fact that they are changing coaches at the time that they will draft Andrew Luck, their future star. Everything Bill Polian has done up to this point has basically been screaming "remodel." New GM, New Head Coach, New QB... the more the changes come it doesn't seem like there will be room for the old. Also getting a defensive minded says something about how much the Colts want to change this team for the future.

Both new hires will be given some difficult tasks to achieve. Allen will have to try and get the Raiders playing better with Carson Palmer while winning the AFC West. Pagano will have rebuild a team and develop a QB for the future. Sounds tough on both counts.

Detroit Pays a Prince's Ransom

Albert Pujols was without a doubt the biggest free agent available and he went to the Angels. After that, the eyes went to the next big name (and biggest guy, literally) and that was Prince Fielder. Fielder had been with the Brewers since 2005 and had been a very big part of the Brew Crew. However, everyone knew that Prince was never coming back to the Brewers since the money he was going to be asking for was too much for Milwaukee. It took a while for someone to pay the "Royalty Fees" but a club did. Prince Fielder won't have to move far as he just agreed to a 9 year, $214 Million deal with the Detroit Tigers.

What a landing for the Tigers. To get Prince and Miguel Cabrera on the same team is a huge thing for Detroit. Of course, this move seems like a part knee jerk reaction to the fact the Tigers might've lost Victor Martinez for the entire season. This move, though, makes the middle of the Tigers' lineup something to be feared for pitching. The concern now is going to be getting Cabrera to adjust to 3rd base again in order for Prince to be at first. Also, where will Victor Martinez play when he does come back from injury?

I do like the aggressive move that the Tigers are making by getting Fielder but this isn't something they necessarily needed. What they needed is pitching. They were in the top four in batting last year but pitching was more middle of the road despite the fact they had and still have Justin Verlander. This team needs more quality pitching rather than quality hitting. I know that there were not a great amount of quality pitchers available and that Victor Martinez is hurt but this a very long term contract that may come back and haunt them down the road.

P.S. Program Announcement: I need something new, something challenging, a co-host. Starting this Thursday night, tune in to "Dan and Van," a show that covers a wide variety of topics: news, entertainment, whatever the hell the Oscars are... and, of course, some sports. "Dan and Van" starts Thursday at 8 PM on KSUNradio.com... Pretty Good.

P.P.S. Other Program Announcement: Will try to have the Sports Khan Radio Show back but no guarantees.

Joe Paterno: 1926-2012

The last few months were perhaps the most trying months for Joe Paterno ever as he was fired after 46 years as the Penn State football coach due to the uncovering of perhaps the worst sports scandal of all time. What made things worse was the fact that Joe Pa had health issues to deal with. Unfortunately, those health issues took their toll. Joe Paterno passed away due to lung cancer. There were reports of him in serious condition on Saturday and he then passed away on Sunday. He was 85.

Joe Pa was a legend around Penn State who built that football program and it's prestige. His 409 wins, 37 bowl games, and two national titles make him arguably the best coach in College Football history. Of course, whatever Joe Paterno ever did is forever tarnished because of the underage sex scandal and his role in it. Joe Pa didn't commit the acts but his failure to report it fully to the authorities and the fact it happened at Penn State will haunt his legacy forever.

My thought are of course with Joe Paterno's family and I say rest in peace to Joe Pa. I'm not sure how Joe Paterno will be remembered, whether it will be more good or more bad. However, as the students and Nittany Lions fans remember him in their own ways, no one can doubt that Joe Paterno still is Penn State.

"Special" Mistakes Costs the 49ers and Ravens Big Time; Super Bowl Rematch as a Result

This is without a doubt one of the most difficult days for me as a sports fan. The depression I feel on this day is perhaps only paralleled with game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when the Red Sox lost to the Yankees.

The 49ers went into Candlestick park with rainy conditions and looked for a fight with the New York Giants. Man, did they get one. It was a defensive game throughout with both offenses under performing, especially from the 49ers. Despite this fact, the 49ers were winning 14-10. It was then one of the costly mistakes was made when a bouncing punt went off of Kyle Williams knee and recovered by the Giants though not initially ruled that way. Review found the mistake and corrected it. Manning and the Giants would benefit from the good field position and throw a TD pass to Manningham. The 49ers would get a FG to tie it and force OT.

Once again, it was a defensive struggle with Eli Manning unable to do anything vs. the 49ers defense and the 49ers offense continuing to struggle. The 49ers were going to get it for the second time in OT when Kyle Williams fumbled the ball after being stripped of it and the Giants recovered it with great field position again. It was essentially over. A few hand offs later for better field position gave Lawrence Tynes a 31 yard FG opportunity. He made it. Giants win, 20-17 in OT.

I must first say, while eating some crow, congrats to the Giants as they played a fine game going for mistake free football. Second thing I will say, and I know this seems being a sore loser, WE SHOULD'VE WON THIS GAME!!! If Ted Ginn Jr. wasn't injured this week, Williams wouldn't have been out there. Hell, if Williams doesn't make those costly mistakes, we would've won this game. The 49ers defense had them beat and wasn't letting Manning do a thing. It was those two costly mistakes that gave the Giants good field position and momentum to score. The Giants didn't win this game, the 49ers lost it.

As for the other game, the Ravens and the Patriots played a close one, themselves, in Foxboro. After being criticized for his play this last week, even by a teammate, Joe Flacco wanted to prove himself the next "Joe Cool." He actually had the better game over Brady, stat wise. Flacco and the offense actually had a chance to win the game at the end there but failed to get into the endzone. They could still tie the game late with a FG. But Billy Cundiff came out and shanked a 32 yarder to the right with 11 seconds left. Pats hang on to win, 23-20.

The mistakes that cost both losing teams were made on special teams. What a depressing theme. Anyway, we are getting a Super Bowl rematch for the Super Bowl XLVI: the Giants vs. the Patriots. GO PATRIOTS!!!

P.S. Despite the sour taste in my mouth right now, a fine season from the 49ers. Not what I was hoping for going into the postseason but definitely more than what I expected from them at the start of the regular season. Not a bad first year for Jim Harbaugh but now the bar is set very high. Let's meet it next season.

Beckham to Stay in LA

When the MLS season ended last November (hell, even before that), speculation began on whether or not David Beckham would stay with the LA Galaxy or not. Teams from England expressed interest, teams specifically from London, but the one team that seemed like the biggest contender for Beckham's feet was actually from across the channel with Paris Saint-Germain or PSG. They didn't seem to last long at all despite offering $18 million for 18 months as they were turned down at the beginning of the New Year. The public had no idea what was going on until today when it was announced that David Beckham will stay in Southern California. Beckham has agreed to a two year contract to stay with the LA Galaxy.

The MLS Cup winners All Star roster remains intact. It will be Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, and David Beckham together for a while. This definitely makes the Galaxy the favorite for the MLS Cup for this season. Still, you have to wonder when David Beckham will start to fade into the sunset for good. It doesn't seem like it any time soon as he posted his best numbers in MLS just this last season. I wonder, myself, whether or not David Beckham will actually finish his career in LA. He will be 37 this year and should almost be done.

Glad to see you still in MLS, even if it is in SoCal. Stay as long as you like, Beckham.

Yu Darvish is Coming to Texas

Every few years, a star athlete from Japan gets talked about and speculation begins on whether this guy will play in the majors and whether or not he will be any good. This year's big prospect from across the Pacific is Yu Darvish. The Rangers won the right to negotiate with Darvish for a record $51.7 million posting bid which would go to Darvish's team in Japan, the Nippon-Ham Fighters, if the Rangers and Darvish manage to come to an agreement. The deadline for the negotiations was today and the two sides have agreed to a contract. Yu Darvish will play for the Texas Rangers for a 6 year $60 million deal.

That's a lot of money to someone who hasn't thrown one pitch in the Majors. He better have some good numbers in Japan. How about going 93-38 with a 1.99 ERA in his Japanese Career. Nice numbers. It's still not against MLB talent but that ain't bad. If he is a good pitcher on the MLB level, it will be something that the Rangers need. They just lost CJ Wilson (who was eh come October) and need a replacement to last. Darvish might be that guy. He shows a lot of promise and is only 25 years old.

I am eager to follow this young athlete's career in the Majors and hope he does well.

Jim Caldwell Fired From Colts

Jim Caldwell's first season as the Colts head coach the team went 14-2 and went to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Saints. His last season the team went 2-14 and managed to grab the #1 overall pick in the Draft. I say his "last season" because the Colts have fired Jim Caldwell from the team after an abysmal season with no Peyton Manning. They have fired Bill Polian and now Jim Caldwell. Caldwell was 26-22 overall as the team's head coach. Speculation now begins as to who team owner, Jim Irsay and the new GM will hire to take over this team at a crossroads.

What a crossroads too. Not only will the head coach be expected to lead the team back to former glory with Peyton Manning but he will also have to develop Andrew Luck on the back end. Or will the team trade Manning? It's not quite sure what the team will do at this point but if they keep both Manning and Luck, that head coach will have his hands full. I wonder if this unique opportunity will attract certain head coaches from the press box. While this is an intriguing offer for most, I doubt "certain coaches" will leave the press box for it.

Whoever does take over for the Colts, good "Luck" to them.

Some Baseball News: Timmy and Victor (Mostly)

It's been a lot of football posts lately and before I do another one I thought I would change the pace with some baseball. Heaven help me if I actually post about a simple NBA regular season game without some bigger implications implied.

First thing is that Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants are in salary arbitration and have a difference they need to sort out. The Giants have seemed to offer him $17 million while Timmy wants $21.5 million (which he deserves). Timmy might have had one more loss than his total wins last year, but his ERA was still a 2.74. The Giants have to sort this out with Timmy and make he is on the team for years to come. You know how hard it is to find an ace? You have to keep him, along with Matt Cain.

The other piece of Baseball news is that Victor Martinez might already be done for the year. Really? Players have even reported yet. Apparently he tore his ACL during a off season training workout. Sucks for him. Sucks for the Tigers just as much considering how good a hitter Victor is. This hurts the Tigers chances of getting back to the postseason for sure. He's no Miguel Cabrera but he is still key to that team.

A bit of other news: Cole Hamels and Jacoby Ellsbury have signed one year deals with the Phillies and the Red Sox receptively. Those two basically staying put for now. And also the Rangers have until Wednesday Afternoon to get their deal done with Yu Darvish or he will go back to Japan. They need some pitching but is this the right move for the team?

P.S. Now back to some football.

Pats End Tebowmania, Ravens Oust the Texans, and Giants Upset the Packers (and Make 49ers Fans Happy)

The 49ers beat the Saints barely with 9 seconds left. What else happened this divisional weekend?

Well, first the Broncos went into New England to face the Patriots and try to keep the magic alive. It's a pity there was a guy in the audience exposing all the magicians tricks. That Brady kid just won't let the magician perform. It was over by halftime. Pats destroyed the Broncos, 45-10. Tom Brady threw 6 TD passes with five of them coming in the first half. Meanwhile, Tebow was 9/26 for only 136 yards and was sacked five times. The story of Tebow is over for the year. Now well get to see how the team will build around him if they will at all while the Pats go on in the postseason.

As to who will face the Pats? The Texans and the Ravens fought for that honor in Baltimore. It was surprisingly a close game towards the end as the Texans kept it within one score. However, the inexperience of TJ Yates as their QB cost them greatly. He threw 3 INTs during in this game with two of them towards the end to seal their fate. The Ravens just edge out the Texans, 20-13. A nice first postseason for the Texans franchise but short of what they wanted or could've achieved. As for the Ravens, they better improve on offense if they want to keep up with the Pats next weekend.

As for who the 49ers will play and where? The Giants and the Packers sorted that mess out in Green Bay. Though it was close game until the 4th, it seemed like Giants all the way. Everything was working for the G-Men: Defense was containing Rodgers, Manning was throwing a great game, even a Hail Mary pass to the endzone worked at the end of the 1st half. The Packers tried coming back in the 4th but the failed onside kick followed by a TD run by Brandon Jacobs sealed their fate. Giants consume the cheese, 37-20.

The divisional round is over leaving only the Conference Title games before the Super Bowl (and Pro Bowl, technically). The AFC will feature the Ravens going to Foxboro to face the Patriots. The NFC will feature the 49ers hosting the Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Is it the 22nd yet?

Alex Smith and the 49ers Outduel the Saints

Today featured some good match ups in the NFL but around the Bay Area, all we cared for was the one at the Stick. The San Francisco 49ers played their first postseason game in 9 years and they did it at home in front of nearly 70,000 fans of theirs. The 49ers came in with the best run defense in the NFL and one of the best overall defenses. That run defense didn't seem to apply much to Drew Brees and the Saints, their opponent.

The Saints came marching in and looked to pounce on the 49ers early. They might've of done so if not for a fumble caused by Donte Whitner that was recovered by the 49ers. It was in fact the 49ers that managed an early lead. Two TD passes by Alex Smith in the first quarter and then a FG by Akers in the 2nd put the 49ers up 17-0. Despite already a couple of INTs thrown by Drew Brees, he keep passing and eventually started to hurt the D. Brees would throw 2 TDs of his own by the half to make it 17-14.

The 2nd half came and the 3rd quarter was quiet with a Akers FG being the only noise. It was not until the last few minutes of the game did it all blow open. Brees hooked up with Darren Sproles for a 44 yard TD pass with 4:02 to go giving the Saints the lead, 24-23. The 49ers offense had to come out of their funk they had for most of the game and somehow grab the game back. Smith managed a drive together and scored a TD off a 28 yard QB sweep run to the outside. They lead by 5 due a failed two point conversion.

The problem for the 49ers? There was 2:11 still on the clock. Drew Brees and the Saints didn't need even half of that. A throw to Jimmy Graham for a 66 yard TD reception gave the Saints a 3 point lead due to a successful two point conversion. The 49ers had to claw back again, this time with 1:37 left to go. They somehow did it. Some nice throws from Smith, with included Vernon Davis, got them within 15 yards of the endzone with a third down play with about 14 seconds left. Smith hiked it, threw it, and somehow Vernon Davis caught it and hung on to it despite the coverage and scored a TD with 9 seconds left. The Saints were good but not that good. Davis let the emotions out and the 49ers win a photo finisher, 36-32.

I still can't believe the 49ers came back from behind to take the lead twice in the final few minutes against the Saints. A great game by the 49ers, especially with Alex Smith and Vernon Davis who came up clutch. That defense of the 49ers was good too but they were getting tired trying to kept Drew Brees out of the endzone. That offense came alive for them at the end to help them out. Perhaps with this win, perceptions about Smith will change like they have for Vernon Davis. I know my perception about has changed.

Anyway, the 49ers are in the NFC Title game and await their opponent. The Packers or the Giants. Either one, bring it on.

P.S. How is this game the 2nd story on Sportscenter? The other one was a blow out and over before halftime. NOW I'm annoyed by Tebow.

Jeff Fisher Chooses The Rams

At the end of the 2010 NFL Season, Jeff Fisher and the Titans had "parted ways" leaving Fisher unemployed this season. That time of unemployment didn't last longer than that. Jeff Fisher was the coach perhaps most sought after so far since the end of 2011. True, Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden's names were mentioned but neither one seemed to want to leave the press box for the sidelines. Jeff Fisher didn't seem to want the press box. Two teams were in the running for Fisher. One team was the Miami Dolphins who are still looking for a replacement for Tony Sparano. The other team did get Jeff Fisher and that was the St. Louis Rams. Fisher now will take on the Rams job taking over for Steve Spagnuolo after a disappointing 2-14 season.

Seems like a sweet deal for Fisher. As coach of the Rams, he has a young QB with All Star potential in him, the 2nd pick in the draft, and a considerably weak division with one exception... THE 49ERS!!! Seems like a recipe that could get the Rams contending for Wild Card spot within a couple of years, maybe even next season. Of course, Fisher will have some latitude considering he is taking over for a 2-14 team. While he is there, he will be expected to make sure Sam Bradford becomes an elite QB in the NFL. I hope he fails in all of these aspects miserably.

Sanchez Gets Ripped, Anonymously

The dysfunction of the Jets has seemingly gone public. After losing their last 3 games in a row and missing the playoffs, outsiders are starting the rip the Jets in several ways. Players appear to be under performing, selfish, and their coach is really fat (Rex). The big story the last day or so has been the ripping of Mark Sanchez, their QB. The New York Daily News has spoken to several teammates within the organization who seem to question Mark's work ethic. One of them said "We have to bring in another quarterback that will make [Sanchez] work at practice. He's lazy and content because he knows he's not going to be benched." What is worse than getting insulted by teammates in public is the fact that none of the teammates were revealed. All are anonymous.

Two interesting things about this story. The first is that teammates should never rip each other in public, especially anonymously. I get that it might be a motivational tool and doing it anonymously makes sure there isn't any direct fights in the locker room, but it seems to me that if you are going to insult someone and try to motivate them or whatever, you tell it to that person's face and the not the media. The second thing that gets brought up in this statement is wondering if any of this is true. Mark Sanchez has been in this league for three years and while he has certainly improved some over his time in the NFL, he hasn't really done anything that makes you think he can be an elite QB. He has had his moments but he doesn't seem to string along enough of them. He isn't consistently good.

If this work ethic is an actual problem then I have some advice for Rex Ryan. You say to him either directly or with him him close enough to hear "Man, that RG3 is pretty good." Make Sanchez think his replacement could be in the next draft and he will give you 110%.

P.S. I would've said Andrew Luck but the Colts already have put a stamp on him.

Raiders Fire Hue Jackson

At the end of the 2010 regular season, I criticized the Raiders and Al Davis for firing Tom Cable after he coached the team to it's best record in years at 8-8. The Al Davis controlled Raiders have made plenty of questionable moves in the past that could almost always be traced back to their owner. Now that Al Davis had passed away, the fan base and the country, for that matter, looked to how the Raiders will run the team. The Raiders officially hired a new GM, Reggie McKenzie, a few days earlier and now McKenzie made his first big move. His move was to fire the head coach of the Raiders, Hue Jackson. The Raiders were 8-8 under Hue Jackson's one year as head coach.

I feel awful for Hue and the fact he was fired. I do understand the decision to a degree. I understand that this new GM wanted to run a team a certain that probably interfered with Hue Jackson's way of doing things. I also get that the Raiders had a disappointing season, overall, as they had something going but just fell apart at the end losing 4 of their last 5 games which cost them a postseason spot. Last, I also get that Jackson was the driving force behind getting Carson Palmer which seem like draft picks well wasted. All of these reasons are valid for getting a new head coach but he was there for only one year. Give the guy a second season at least.

Anyway, it certainly fits into the Raiders way of doing things or the Al Davis way. A unexpected move like this is something that seems out of sync. That's the Raiders.

Alabama Wins Last Illegitimate National Title?

Back in November, the college football world witnessed the two best teams in the country duke it out in Tuscaloosa in what many described as zzzzzzzzz. So naturally the voters and the system selected these same two teams to fight for the Illegitimate National Title (INT). CAUSE IT WAS SOOOOO EXCITING THE FIRST TIME AROUND!!! Alabama and LSU went into the Superdome in New Orleans to fight for the biggest prize in the college football world. Quite frankly, this one seemed less exciting than the first. It was practically all FGs until the last quarter, Alabama pitched a defensive shut out, and it was a rematch of a game from the regular season between teams from the same conference that has dominated the INT for the last several years making it boring and predictable in the first place. It was so uninteresting to me that I didn't even watch it. Anyway, Alabama won it, 21-0. Congrats to them blah blah blah.

The real news is that the format might be changing. Apparently BCS officials will meet today about reorganizing the system through various suggestion of ideas which could include an implementation of a 4 team playoff or the plus one model. I beg the BCS to please go through with some sort of change to give the National title more credibility, preferably my system involving the 4 winners of the 4 BCS Bowls games competing in a two round playoff. The plus one model doesn't seem to be that. It's better being more inclusive but it's not the same thing.

Let's just hope this will be the last Illegitimate National Title won or at least the last one in this format.

Tim Tebow Led Broncos Upset Steelers in OT

Without a doubt the most watched story all year long was Tim Tebow leading the Broncos. Even though the last few weeks of that story had been fading away with Tebow and Broncos losing three straight, it was not gone and just caught ablaze greater than ever. The Broncos went into a home supporting Mile High to face the Steelers. The first quarter seemed of signs to come as the Steelers kept the Broncos out while putting up two FGs on the board. The 2nd quarter was different as Tim Tebow made a couple of fine throws, one of which was a 30 yard TD pass to Eddie Royal. Later in that quarter, Tebow would run in a 8 Yard TD run and Matt Prater hit two FGs before halftime.

The Second half came around and the Steelers came out stronger and more focused. The Steelers managed some drives together and got some breaks to score 17 2nd half points. That TD pass from Big Ben to Jericho Cotchery was an amazing throw and a spectacular job of Cotchery catching it and holding onto it. With all the Steelers momentum, it looked like the end of the Broncos as the Steelers had it again with 1:37 to go. However, the Broncos defense held on and kept the Steelers out of FG range. It was a tie game heading into OT.

With the new OT rules in effect, the Broncos won the toss and start out with it first. The Broncos would have to drive down fie... WAIT!!! TEBOW THROWS A PASS TO DEMARYIUS THOMAS WHO STIFF ARMS HIS WAY TO THE END ZONE!!! AN 80 YARD TD PASS AND THE IS GAME OVER ON THE FIRST PLAY OF OT JUST 11 SECONDS IN!!! BRONCOS WIN IT, 29-23!!!

Another miracle in Mile High for the Broncos as Tebow becomes the star and the center for discussion once again. First, hats off to Demaryius Thomas who had 4 receptions for 201 yards and that one TD but he made those big catches throughout the game. Second, great defense for Denver barely holds on and stops Big Ben from rallying more points at the end. Lastly, HOW IS TIM TEBOW DOING THIS?!?!?!

P.S. There was also another game on today. I forget what it was, though. Whatever, GO TEBOW!!!

Texans Win First Playoff Game and Saints March Past Lions

The NFL Postseason has begun. Yesterday, two games were played to kick off the playoffs and the road to Indy. The first game was the Bengals vs. the Texans. It was the Texans first playoff game ever and they had to do it without their star QB, Matt Schaub. It didn't seem to effect them. They still had Arian Foster who ran all over the Bengals getting 153 yards and 2 TDs with 24 carries. Meanwhile, Andy Dalton struggled as he threw 3 INTs in which one was returned for a TD. Not a great postseason debut for Dalton. Texans win their first ever playoff game, 31-10. Great day for that relatively young franchise.

The second game of the day I would like to forget. The Lions went back to New Orleans for a second time to play in a Wild Card round playoff game to see if they could beat the Saints this time around in the Superdome. The result was the same. It was actually a close game throughout until you got to the 4th quarter. The Saints just couldn't be stopped and Stafford threw a couple costly INTs. The Saints win, 45-28. Why don't I like this win? That means the 49ers have to face the Saints in Candlestick next weekend. I would've preferred the Giants or the Falcons. Not that the 49ers can't beat the Saints I just would've preferred one of the other two teams.

Just two more games to be played this weekend. The Steelers will play the Broncos and the Falcons will face the Giants.

Jorge Posada to Hang Up the Catcher's Mask

Jorge Posada has had quite a career for himself as the New York Yankees Catcher. He has been an important piece of the team for a long time but in the last couple of years he has slumped considerably and he was isn't the starting catcher anymore for the team being assigned the DH role and even moved back in the lineup. Jorge was taking his new role not too well and even had a incident during the season. I guess the time for Jorge has come as his skills have dwindled. Jorge Posada is said to be planning to retire. Posada spent his entire career with the Yankees winning 4 World Series titles with the team.

As a Red Sox fan, I wish Posada was still starting for the Yankees. Mainly cause he can't play like he used and a is a shell of his former self but I still wish he was there. Being a bit more serious, Posada had a great career and should be happy with what he was a part of and accomplished with the team. I must say it is nice that Posada should retire now instead of with another team. Better for him to retire as a Yankee for life. You don't see a lot of people play for just one team their entire career and baseball needs more of that (Pujols).

So a good question to ask at the end of every player's career: Is Jorge Posada a Hall of Famer? I honestly don't know. I know he has been a substantial threat as a Yankee being a formidable hitter and making memorable plays both next to home plate and behind it. If I had a vote, I would reluctantly vote for Posada based on the moments he has produced and been a part of.

The Prodigal Coordinator Returns

Just under 3 years ago, Josh McDaniels left the nest of the New England Patriots to pursue his dream as a head coach in the NFL. He took the head coaching job in Denver after 7 years of being with the Patriots. As we all know, McDaniels didn't last two full seasons in Denver with the most notable thing he did was draft Tim Tebow. Last season, he was the Offensive Coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. With Bill O'Brien leaving the Patriots as the current Offensive Coordinator to go to Penn State, the Pats and McDaniels reached an agreement to make him the new OC at the beginning of next season. McDaniels, however, is coming back to the Pats this postseason as an offensive assistant.

If you are a Pats fan, this seems like good news. McDaniels was the OC when the team was 16-0 in 2007 and broke a ton of offensive scoring records. I sort of feel bad for McDaniels having failed as a head coach but not every great Coordinator in the league can make it as a Head Coach in the NFL. Some just work better as coordinators. Maybe McDaniels will get another Head Coaching shot down the road. He's only 35 and has plenty of time to make another impression in some GM's mind. If that opportunity does knock on McDaniels door again, he better not screw it up again.

P.S. What the Pats really need is an old Defensive Coordinator to come back. Someone call Romeo Crennel.

Bill O'Brien the Next Penn State Coach

Just about two months ago, Joe Paterno was fired from Penn State after 46 years as the Penn State football coach amidst one of the biggest scandals in sports history. Finding a successor to Joe Pa was something tricky to do considering the situation. You'll have to find someone that will be able to bring Penn State out of the shambles by rebuilding a football program. The Nittany Lions have found their builder. It's Patriots offensive coordinator, Bill O'Brien. Of course, O'Brien isn't not splitting from the Pats right now. He will leave the team after the postseason or, in other words, at the end of next week (ha ha ha).

I am very glad that Bill O'Brien has been chosen as the new Penn State football coach. I'm not really happy for him but at the fact that he was chosen instead of Greg Roman. The 49ers need to keep Greg Roman not because of his skill level but just because Alex Smith needs a Offensive Coordinator to stay on for once. Anyway, good for O'Brien, I guess. I'm not sure how important he was to the Pats considering Tom Brady was the man he was working with.

As I close, Bill O'Brien will need all the luck he can get considering the state that Penn State is in. Huge scandal that haunts the university, top recruits going to other schools, and still Joe Pa's shoes to fill after 46 years of great football. No vacation for O'Brien, that's for sure.

Joe Torre Wants to Buy the Dodgers

So many different groups have come together to want to buy the Dodgers that it's hard to even care any more about more possible Dodger owners. Another big name has thrown his hat into the ring for the team. Joe Torre, who was manager of the Dodgers from 2008-2010, is leaving his current job with MLB as Vice President of Baseball operations to join a bidding group for the Dodgers. Joe Torre was only with the commissioner's office for about a year and now leaves to try his hand in running an actual team instead of umpires.

Another name joins the party. So, who have we got so far that wants a piece of the LA Team? We have Joe Torre and his group, Magic Johnson's group, Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser's group, Larry King's group, Fred Claire's group, Peter O'Malley (former Dodgers owner) and his group, and possibly Mark Cuban depending on how much the media want to make this one a reality. Who of these has the best shot of owning the Dodgers? If it wasn't about the money and about preference, I would say O'Malley because of previous experience. If Joe Torre was picked ultimately, it would seem like it was fixed towards Torre from within. Just something the conspiracy theorists would say (like myself).

And They Are Not Fired?

If yesterday was Black Friday then today was "Whew" Tuesday. A couple of coaches and some upper management personal were fired yesterday across the league. While some personal were fired today, no head coaches were. In fact, some head coaching jobs are safe. One of those coaches that was mentioned as safe for next season was Andy Reid of the Eagles. The Eagles were undoubtedly expected to go to the playoffs as the "Dream Team" and fell far short of expectations. The other coach that was deemed safe was Norv Turner. The Chargers looked like they had their act together early on but lost their way midseason losing 6 in a row and couldn't recover in time. Both coaches should feel lucky they are safe, Norv Turner most of all.

If I was a typical owner in the NFL, impatient and wanting instant results, I would've fired these guys. Apparently both owners aren't that way. The Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie, seems to have all the patience in the world in Andy Reid while the Chargers majority owner, Alex Spanos, seems content with Norv Turner and also his GM, AJ Smith, who is staying as well. I can understand Lurie's attitude for Reid as he has done so much for the Eagles in the past but Norv Turner is not Andy Reid. Sure he has some a couple of good seasons with the Chargers but he has missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons, something that shouldn't happen to this quality of a team.

Maybe patience is the answer to both problems this season. It was a season that had no off season practices due to the lockout so each coach couldn't properly prepare for the season with their respective teams. Both of them, however, would be fired in my book if they don't make the playoffs next season.

Rangers Win the Delayed "Winter Classic"

The NHL has had a fairly recent tradition of playing on outdoor game every New Year's Day called the Winter Classic. This year the event was in Philadelphia but was on January 2nd. The reason for the delay? The NFL seemingly c**k blocked the NHL using NBC TV rights. So they had to play yesterday. Anyway, it was the battle of the New York Rangers vs. the Philadelphia Flyers in Citizens Bank Park. It was a close game but the Rangers were able to pull out a win scoring the last 3 goals of the game. They hold one to a lead at the end despite a last minute penalty shot and win it, 3-2. Sad to see the Flyers lose the Winter Classic at home but they had their chance to tie it with that penalty shot. Henry Lundqvist was having none of that, however.

A fine tradition somewhat carries on for the NHL. Let's keep it going next year. How about one in Canada, eh?

Happy New Year... You're Fired

You've heard of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Kill Me Now 24th but have you heard of Black Monday. It is perhaps the most feared day of the year for NFL coaches who fell below of team expectations. It's the day when firings start. We have had already a few head coach firings this season but with Black Monday yesterday we saw some more. Steve Spagnuolo of the Rams was fired after his team went 2-14 and Raheem Morris was fired after losing 10 games to end the season as the Bucs Head Coach. As for some management, Billy Devaney was fired as Rams GM, and Bill and his son Chris Polian have been fired from their jobs as Vice Chairman and GM of the Colts respectively. Some positive news for hiring was somewhat made as it appears Jeff Fisher will be interviewed for the Head Coaching jobs of the Rams and Dolphins.

A lot of news to digest. In today's NFL, you have to always be improving or have a damn good reason for setback. Spagnuolo and Morris had neither of those excuses so off they went. I honestly thought both of their respective teams would do better this year. The Rams were 7-9 and contenders for the NFC West last season with Sam Bradford but were just awful this year. As for the Bucs, they actually started off on the right foot but somehow fell apart for the last ten games. I was a fool for picking this team for the Super Bowl but the way the team and Josh Freeman performed in 2010 it seemed like the Bucs were going to take a step forward, not backwards.

I'm sure both of these guys will gets some coordinator offers somewhere. Okay, at least Spagnuolo. As for Fisher, if my final choices this season were the Rams or Dolphins, I would be tempted to just wait a year for something else. But that's a first glance reaction. To be honest, both look like good spots. Tom Brady and the Pats can't hold the AFC East forever while the Jets and Bills look like shaky teams right now. As for the Rams, if Fisher can develop Bradford further, he would have a solid #2 team at least in the NFC West.

P.S. Fisher, please take your schemes to South Beach. Matt Moore deserves a solid coach for another chance and it's very sunny there. You'll have to play in a dome in St. Louis.

Oregon Wins Rose Bowl and OK State Wins "Insert Sponsor Here" Bowl

Two big bowl games were played yesterday in college football. Now normally the Rose Bowl gets played on New Year's day but since New Year's was on Sunday and the NFL claimed Sundays the Rose Bowl was played yesterday. But hey it's non profit (ha ha ha). Anyway, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Oregon Ducks played the Rose Bowl it was a high scoring dozy of a game. As for who won, the Ducks managed to prevail 45-38. This was Oregon's first Rose Bowl victory in 95 years. Finally the Ducks gets some BCS glory.

As for the other big bowl game, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl was played between the Stanford Cardinal and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This was Andrew Luck's last game with the Cardinal and quite frankly he should've exited with the Orange Bowl last year. A couple of bad kicks from Jordan Williamson at the end of regulation and in OT led to a Stanford loss as Quinn Sharp didn't miss his 22 yard FG in OT that gave the Bowl to the Cowboys, 41-38. Tough loss for the Cardinal but someones's got to lose.

Congrats to the Ducks and the Cowboys on their BCS Bowl victories. There are of course two BCS Bowl games remaining and the Illegitimate National Title still to play.

Giants Take NFC East, Broncos Get In Anyway, Pats Take a #1 Seed and More

The first day of the new year means the last day of the regular season in the NFL. Yesterday had a bunch of great games but the highlight of it all was the Sunday Night Game between the Cowboys and the Giants with the winner going to the playoffs. Tony Romo had a injured and swelled throwing hand and had to deal with Giants D-line that had pressure on Romo all day. 7 Sacks were recorded for the Giants defense. Meanwhile, Eli Manning and Victor Cruz had great performances exploiting the Rob Ryan led Cowboys defense. Cruz had 6 catches for 178 yards and 1 TD. Giants would win this one, 31-14, and claim the NFC East title along with literally the last playoff spot. Cowboys once again have a disappointing season.

Another playoff spot that was fought for earlier in the day was the AFC West spot. All the Broncos needed to do was beat the Chiefs and they were in. This game was a low scoring game which is what the Broncos wanted. Unfortunately they didn't score a TD while the Chiefs scored one. The Chiefs won the game, 7-3. This loss means that the Raiders had a chance to take the AFC West. The Raiders, however, couldn't get the win and lost, 38-26, to the Chargers. So basically the Broncos lose but still get into the playoffs as the AFC West Champions thanks to tie breaker rules.

As for the rest of the NFL, the Pats would eventually get by the Bills, 49-21. This win gets them the #1 seed in the AFC. The Ravens manage to beat the Bengals, 24-16. The Ravens claim the #2 spot in the AFC while the Bengals still get into the playoffs as a Wild Card team. Why? Jets lost to the Dolphins, 19-17 (I Think. It's hard to follow all the formulas). Last ones I'll mention is the Falcons decimated the Bucs, 45-24, and claim the #5 Seed in the postseason thanks to their win and the Lions loss to the Packers, 45-41. The Falcons are the top Wild Card team in the NFC.

The season is over and the playoffs start next weekend. For round one of the playoffs the AFC will feature the Bengals vs. the Texans and the Steelers vs. the Broncos while the Pats and the Ravens take a week off. Round one in the NFC will feature the Lions vs. the Saints and the Falcons vs. the Giants while the Packers and the 49ers take the week off. Which of these teams will be in the Super Bowl? How should I know? I'm trying to hide from my original picks.

49ers Win and Take #2 Seed

Happy New Year, everyone. How fitting it is for my first post of 2012 be about my home team, the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers entered St. Louis in a fine position indeed. They needed a win to get the #2 seed in the NFC and that was it. The Rams, meanwhile, have only 2 wins for the season and are playing for pride and possibly their head coach.

I must say it came close at the end. As the game wore on, it seemed like an easy 49ers win. Some solid defense with some tricks on offense helped put the 49ers up by 21 in the middle of the 4th quarter. However, some good passes, a fortunate onside kick, and a pass interference call somehow made it a 7 point game with 4:36 left. It came to be close but thanks to a defensive stand near the end, the 49ers prevailed, 34-27.

A magnificent regular season for the 49ers ends in St. Louis with a win. The 49ers, who were 6-10 last season, finish 13-3 and take the #2 seed in the NFC. That means the 49ers get a bye week for the postseason. This 49ers team certainly has exceeded everyone's expectations and have now created a buzz around the Bay Area. I am very excited to see what the team will be able to do in the postseason.
