Plaxico Stays in New York But...

The list of noteworthy free agents left in the NFL is getting smaller and perhaps the most intriguing one has been crossed off the list. He's not the most sought after and not the biggest name but when you shoot yourself in a nightclub on accident with a unregistered gun you get the title of most intriguing. Plaxico Burress has found his second chance and he doesn't even have to move. There was speculation that he would actually end up with his old team, the New York Giants, after having a few discussions. Plaxico did end up with the same coin, so to speak, just the other side of it. The New York Jets have signed Plaxico Burress to a one year $3 Million contract. Burress stays in the Big Apple while still playing in New Jersey.

I must say this is a good move for the Jets. Not a lot of risk with $3 million and if Plaxico still has it, he and Santonio Holmes will make a solid duo for Mark Sanchez to throw to. Not sure if he will be better than Braylon Edwards but definitely a better bargain and worth a shot. What's even more interesting is that he chose the Jets over his old previous teams of the Giants and Steelers. Maybe he really wants a fresh start.

P.S. Or maybe he wants some love, Eli Manning.

Juergen Klinsmann Hired as US Head Coach

After Bob Bradley was fired, there was some speculation as to who would replace him as the head coach of the US Men's Soccer Team. Much of that speculation was toward the man who would be hired as the new US Men's head coach: Juergen Klinsmann. He's a former German player who was a good striker but recently has turned manager. He was the manager for the Men's German National Team during their World Cup hosting in 2006 and most recently the manager of Bayern Munich for a brief time. He's truly a big name for the US team to get and will have bigger expectations than Bob Bradley as result. Let's hope a footballer that has plenty of experience playing in the top leagues can help Team USA get further along in the World Cup.

Nnamdi Asomugha Signs with Eagles?

Friday was the beginning period where free agents could sign with their teams. Before this time, we still haven't heard of an agreement between Nnamdi Asomugha and any team. We have on now. The biggest suitors for Asomugha were the Jets but it wasn't them who sign him. It was the Philadelphia Eagles who inked the star CB. Nnamdi Asomugha agreed to a 5 year $60 Million contract with the Eagles. The Eagles weren't done, either. They also came to terms with Vince Young who was just released by the Titans.

Two big surprises for Philly fans. Of course, Asomugha was the big signing and with him to play with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who was just acquired from Arizona yesterday as part of that deal to trade away Kevin Kolb. Definitely a new force to reckon with in the Eagles' secondary as both of these corners will give the whole D a boost. The assumption now is that the team will trade Asante Samuel away for something else seeing that they are filled up on CB's.

As for Vince Young, noteworthy news as the Eagles remain solid at QB should anything happen to Michael Vick while he runs the ball. But the big story is Asomugha and how this could shift the power considerably in the NFC East.

Kolb to the Cardinals, Young Officially Gone From Tennessee, Haynesworth and Ochocinco to the Pats? (and more)

A couple of expected moves were made today in the NFL along with some unexpected ones. One of the expected moves was Kevin Kolb going to Arizona. He joins joins the Cardinals as part of a trade which sends Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a CB, to the Eagles along with a 2nd round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Kolb was supposed to be the next QB starter in Philly until he got hurt and Michael Vick wowed everyone in his place. Now he takes over the Cardinals and gives them a chance for a postseason. Both sides benefit as the Cardinals get a starting QB and the Eagles get a CB to help on defense.

Another expected move was the Titans releasing Vince Young. Young was an alright QB with the team while having a noticeable winning record but he was too drama filled for the club. They now have Jake Locker for the future and Matt Hasselbeck for the present. As for where Vince Young will go, I can't say. My guess is a team that has a questionable starter as QB and needs a solid #2 man just in case.

The unexpected moves of the day both involved the Patriots. The Pats seemingly don't mind dealing with drama as they have acquired two interesting characters to say the least. First is Albert Haynesworth, the DT who just couldn't get along with Mike Shanahan of the Redskins. The other is another storied Diva: Chad Ochocinco, himself. What possessed Bill Belichick to make these moves? Who knows. Maybe Belichick thought that he managed Randy Moss alright and that he could handle two more players with off field issues. Good luck to him.

Other moves of the day included the Dolphins getting Reggie Bush from the Saints in a trade. A solid move for Miami as the next step may be getting Kyle Orton. The Bears traded one of Jay Cutler's favorite targets, TE Greg Olsen, to the Panthers. Passing in Chicago might go down as a result. Lastly, the Texans have agreed to a deal with CB Johnathan Joseph for 5 years $48.75 Million. The Texans needed to sure up the DB's to at least challenge Peyton Manning and they have to a degree.

Free Agents can sign with their teams tomorrow as many of the previous deals reached in the past few days will be ratified. Kyle Orton still hasn't been moved from Denver yet. That's something to watch out for.

BOB BRADLEY, YOU'RE FIRED!!!

The US Men's soccer team has had some good moments under Bob Bradley. They got passed the group stage at the World Cup last year, they beat Spain a year prior, and they got to the Gold Cup Final this year even though we seemingly get there every time. However, Bob Bradley has seemingly not done enough for the US Men's team as their head coach and has been fired. This news comes on the eve of rematch with Mexico in a exhibition setting in August and the Olympics being just around the corner along with the 2014 World Cup qualification cycle which also begins next year.

A new coach will seeming lead Team USA through all these tests and presumably through the 2014 World Cup at the very least. What can be expected of the next head coach? Simply this: do better than Bob Bradley did overall. That especially means getting farther than the Round of 16 at the World Cup. While Bradley's World Cup effort was an improvement over the previous 2006 World Cup, it still wasn't enough to remember.

While I guess the change of leaders might help the team, the real difference has to be in player development and talent. I might have struck this cord before but it's still a solid note. Until youth development significantly improves, the Men's team won't get far over the long run. Now there is hope in some of the young guns on the team but I can't see them as the big difference makers yet.

Sadly enough, focusing on youth development might not be enough what with kids in America aspiring to play other sports like American Football and Baseball. But quite frankly, its the better card to play overall.

P.S. I neither support this firing or hate it, I'm just giving an alternate opinion about what needs to be done to improve the sport in the USA.

McNabb to Minnesota, Hasselbeck to Join Titans, Some HB's Hold Out and More

As the first teams reported for training camp, more deals were reached across the NFL. Yesterday saw some significant news from 2 QB's. 1st, Donovan McNabb has been traded to the Minnesota Vikings. If McNabb can have a great season in Minnesota, the Vikings will love him. What could be expected as a minimum is him being a mentor to Christian Ponder who the Vikings just drafted. If McNabb is going to lead the Vikings to a postseason, he will have to do it without their top WR as Sidney Rice has agreed to a deal with the Seahawks. Tough break for Vikings there.

The 2nd big QB to make news was Matt Hasselbeck who has reportedly made a deal with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans also have a drafted QB in their ranks with Jake Locker and also are like Minnesota in that they are in need of a QB to possibly lead them back to the playoffs now. Hasselbeck did lead the Seahawks to a postseason last year but with a 7-9 team. He'll have to be even more on his game if he wants a playoff spot in a division that has Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Meanwhile, a couple of HB's have made some holdout moves. Frank Gore of the 49ers and Chris Johnson of the Titans are holding out for more money. They have strong cases for bigger paychecks as each one is essential to their teams. One could easily make the argument that without them, neither team has a shot at the playoffs. Meanwhile, the HB DeAngelo Williams has agreed to stay with the Panthers for a 5 year $43 Million Dollar contract.

As for other news, the Dolphins are looking into getting Kyle Orton from the Broncos as Denver has seemingly been struck by Tim Tebow fever. Santonio Holmes has agreed to a 5 year $50 Million deal with the Jets. This move definitely affects the Jets possibility to sign Nnamdi Asomugha. Lastly, it looks like Kevin Kolb will start for a team this year as there seems to be a deal being discussed that would send Kolb to the Cardinals. More great news for the 49ers.

Why I Don't Care for Carlos Beltran

Today, the Giants beat the Phillies, 2-1, in Philadelphia with some solid pitching by Matt Cain and the bullpen. After today, they are currently a few games in front of the D'Backs and look like they will take the West (for now). The Defending World Champions, however, feel obligated to not only take the West but the World Series for a second year in a row. Who can blame them for that feeling? After giving San Francisco their first World Series Title ever, they would like to give them another. So, what do they do? They improve on their offense that desperately needs a solid hitter. The Giants would do that by trading for Carlos Beltran of the Mets. Part of the deal includes the Giants giving the Mets one of their pitching prospects, Zach Wheeler.

While I like the move, I would've been fine without it. It's not that I don't want another World Series Title, I do. It's just that I don't think we should be trading away part of our future in order to get it. Now grant it, it's a pitching prospect and everyone know we have enough pitching right now. "Right now" being the key words. Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner are all young and have full careers ahead of them but who's to say they will all be with the Giants? If one leaves and we don't have a proper pitcher to replace them, the Giants could fall out of contention for another World Title pretty fast.

But I must admit, it gives us better chances now. For years, I've wanted the Giants to make a big name acquisition mid-season but they didn't do it. Instead, they bulked up on great pitchers and somewhat skilled hitters and managed to get a World Series Title that way. Now that we have made this kind of trade, I don't know if it's really worth it. If the Giants win the World Series this year, I will be happy and never criticize the front office again (likely will forget that promise as soon as I post this). But if they don't win and don't manage to keep Beltran for a few more seasons, we might've wasted part of our future for nothing.

P.S. Also, there has been no back-to-back champions for the last 10 seasons.

P.P.S. Beltran, please make me eat Crow.

King Felix Helps Mariners End 17 Game Slump

The Mariners were just awful the last couple of weeks what with losing 17 games in a row. In the third game vs. the Yankees, they were looking at getting swept and their 18th straight loss. Luckily for the Mariners, Felix Hernandez took the mound for them and held the Yankees in check. Meanwhile, the offense finally put some good some production with 5 runs in the 7th Inning. The Mariners would win, 9-2, and end their worst slump in Franchise history at 17 games. Who else but King Felix to help them get a win. And to do it against the Yankees is slightly surprising. Good for them. Let's hope they don't fall into that kind of funk again.

P.S. I say slightly surprising because a good team will usually lose 60-70 games a year so it has to do with probability more or less. It would be really surprising if they managed to sweep the Yankees.

Ervin Santana Pitches 1-Run No Hitter

The Angels went up against the Indians in a rubber match between the two in Cleveland. Ervin Santana would take the mound for the Halos and while Santana never lived up to elite expectations, he could still throw a solid game from time to time. This was one of those times. It didn't start out that way, though, as Santana would allow a run to score on a wild pitch after the runner had managed to get to third thanks to a couple of mistakes by the defense. Santana, though, didn't lose confidence and seemed to gain it along the way. He went the full 9 innings with 10 K's, 1 BB, and, believe it or not, not hits allowed. That's right. Ervin Santana allowed one run (not earned) and yet allowed no hits. He throws the first Angels No Hitter in nearly 27 years as the Angels do win, 3-1.

An amazing start for Santana with a weird twist added to it at the beginning. The last time a run scored on a pitcher that recorded a No Hitter was 1993 when Darryl Kile pitched one for the Astros over the Mets, 7-1. Sort of special history recorded today. It was also the third No Hitter this season in the Majors. Congrats to Ervin Santana on the remarkable feat. Sure, the shutout would've been nice but who could argue with a No Hitter.

Pirates Get Robbed by the Ump

Ladies and Gentlemen, when it comes to the instant replay debate, I now give you the new exhibit A in the case of the People that make Sense vs. the idiots who run Major League Baseball. The Pirates and the Braves were involved in an epic game last night/this morning in which they basically played two games and some change. The game went on to go 19 whole innings and maybe it should've gone 20. It was tied 3-3 and Scott Proctor of the Braves hit a grounder to third and his teammate on third, Julio Lugo, decided to try and come home for the win. Pedro Alvarez for the Pirates threw it home to Michael McKenry and he tagged Lugo out by a mile. It was now 2 outs in the 19th and runners on... wait, he was called safe? Jerry Meals, the home plate umpire, called Lugo safe even though Lugo was clearly out by two miles. The Braves won in a blunder walk-off call, 4-3.

I thought Josh Hamilton eyes were bad. How could Jerry miss this call? Hellen Keller could've made that call. It wasn't even close like the Jim Joyce mistake a year ago. I bet Joyce is sending Jerry a gift basket for taking the "worst call ever" spot. MLB needs to seriously consider... you know what? They just need to expand instant replay. There is no excuse anymore. That NL Central race is too close for Pirates to lose one like this. If they are out of October by one game, they should be citing this in front of Bud Selig.

P.S. I don't think Clint Hurdle done screaming.

Jackson Takes Hasselbeck's Place, Palmer Will Stay Retired, Burress Back to the Giants? (and more)

First of all I must say that my interest in the 49ers has dropped a bit considering that Alex Smith will re-sign to a one year deal worth $5 Million dollars. We now know for sure the 49ers will not make any noise in January.

Second, why not go after Hasselbeck? Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawks have parted ways with Hasselbeck saying he will not re-sign with the team. There is speculation that he will go to the Titans to help them out with getting wins and developing their new QB, Jake Locker. He could come here instead where there is also a solid running game, a better chance of making the playoffs, and we also need someone to develop our young QB, Colin Kaepernick. Instead we re-sign the failure. Great move, Harbaugh, you jacka**.

Meanwhile, Tavaris Jackson takes Hasselbeck's place in Seattle as they have agreed to a deal. I would've taken him over Smith. ANYONE BUT SMITH, HARBAUGH!!! At least Tavaris Jackson gets another shot at a stable starting job as QB. Good for him.

Wish I could say the same thing about Carson Palmer. The Bengals have said they will not trade Palmer basically taking a moral stand saying that he agreed to a contract with them and he needs to fulfill it. So, I guess Palmer will stay retired. Somewhat proud of the Bengals for just sitting a valuable trading commodity like that. Still, I WISH WE COULD'VE GOTTEN PALMER, HARBAUGH!!!

The craziness doesn't end there for today as the Giants are actually talking to Plaxico Burress about a possible return to the team. I've got to give another moral compliment, this time to the Giants. I was thinking this is crazy talk for a few seconds but then I thought about a bit: they are being the bigger man here and considering giving him a second chance. I mean, it's not like he did a horrible thing. He shot himself in the leg with a gun he didn't have a permit for. He didn't rape anyone or killed anyone with a car or took the Anime Pokemon a bit too far. He just shot himself in the leg.

Also in the news is that the Cowboys are cutting several players, like most teams are doing, but one of them is Marion Barber. Charles Johnson has agreed to a deal with the Panthers for 6 years, $72 million. And the Jets are looking to re-sign Santonio Holmes and are looking into Nnamdi Asomugha.

The bottom line of day one into the free agent madness is ALEX SMITH IS GOING TO RUIN THE 49ERS A LITTLE LONGER!!! THANKS FOR THE UPCOMING WASTED SEASON, HARBAUGH!!!

P.S. Very proud of the moral stands I'm seeing here today. You know, the kind of stands and acts that are more likely to be seen in an amateur version of football and not were money and profit is at stake. HA HA HA!!!

Deal Struck in the NFL and What Happens Next

The NFL Lockout has been on for the last few months while the Players and the Owners fought for their side and benefits that would favor them. Many fans were fed up with the whole situation not liking either side and just wanting a sure season of football around the corner. Now they have that sure thing. Today, the players fulfilled their side by approving the new CBA with the team reps voting unanimously, 32-0, even the Raiders rep. In the deal that was struck, the owners will now keep 52 percent of the revenues, not 47% which was the old number. Also in that deal is the rookie wage scale that will certainly affect the rookies, especially in the first round draft picks. It also affects teams as the first picks in the draft will now have much more value. The current salary cap now is $120 Million. And all it cost the fans was one lousy pre-season game.

So now what? The season gets underway. IMMEDIATELY!!! Okay, so games will still start in September but everything else starts this week. Free Agent negotiations, rookie signings, teams getting together, Brett Favre return talk. You know, the usual yearly stuff now squished into a very short period of time. Somethings to watch out for are the free agent moves like the star DB, Ndamdi Asomugha, and WR, Santonio Holmes. Free agent discussions can begin tomorrow while teams can sign them by Friday. It will be interesting to see who can get Asomugha.

Also, how will this year's rookie class do considering they couldn't meet with team officials? They will certainly take a hit and careers will likely be affected because of it. Veterans will certainly have more of an edge with rookies being even less prepared. Like always, will have to pay close attention to the top QB rookies like Cam Newton to see how they will do.

Well, football's back and while I am a bit disappointed with both sides negotiating instead of one side being unable to negotiate (like congress), I am glad that football has returned as a fan. I'm looking forward to see what moves will be made and how the season will be affected because of this lockout. My Super Bowl pick is... okay, getting ahead of myself a bit. Come back in September.

P.S. Still one big questions looms over my head: Are the 49ers going to bring back Alex Smith to ruin this team more? Looks like they will. WHY!!!

Mariners Achieve a New Franchise Low

The Seattle Mariners have had a rough past few seasons with their bright spot being King Felix. Recently, there hasn't been any bright spot as the team loses it's 16th game in a row which broke the team record of 14 yesterday. They most recently lost to the Yankees, 10-3. Luckily for them, they still don't have the worst record in Majors, just the 5th worst. The Astros currently have that dishonor at 33-69. Cheer up, Seattle, you're still not the worst this year but just on the worst streak this year.

P.S. Let's set set a MLB record, okay.

Owners Agree, Players Don't... Yet

The media was all abuzz this week after a few weeks of negotiations between the NFL Owners and the Players. Both sides seemed to be coming to an agreement and it looked like it was all going to end this week. Think again. Thursday was the media imposed deadline for the two sides in which only the Owners actually agreed. They voted on the deal and it was 31 for and zero against. The Raiders would abstain (who else but Al Davis). Meanwhile, the players didn't vote on the deal yet as Wednesday passed, then Thursday and Friday.

It's not that they don't disagree with the deal, it's just that the Players are reviewing it and going over the details. The Owners seemed to have not given them the whole version of the proposed CBA and the players are still going over it in fine detail trying not to rush into anything. Meanwhile, the fans are starting to get impatient. Although it may not matter that much but a game has been officially canceled. The Hall of Fame weekend game with the Rams and the Bears has been canceled due to time constraints. It's only one game and a preseason game but it's still money.

In my opinion, it still seems like a deal will get done. Maybe a little later than expected but there will be a final deal. The Players are looking at a ten year deal which is to say the least an incredible amount of time. They just want to make sure the owners didn't sneak anything in the CBA which some suspect they might've done. As a fan of the game, I say take your time, ignore the public, and don't rush into anything. There are millions of dollars at stake along with possible new rules and regulations that can affect salaries and careers. I'd read the CBA with a magnifying glass if I were any of the player reps.

As for fans, be patient. I know you want football and you find it disgusting that millionaires and billionaires are fighting over money but if you were them, you'd slow down and read this thing carefully too.

Possible Baseball Trades as Deadline Approaches

It's that time of year again, baseball fans, where teams are looking to buy or sell talent for a playoff push or a rebuilding project. K-Rod was already traded to the Brewers and there might be another trade made by the Mets. Jose Reyes has been a possibility for a while now especially with the year he is having. He is a valuable shortstop to anyone looking for defense and great at hitting. Carlos Beltran is also another possible Met on the move. The Phillies are said to be looking at him and the Braves are also considered a contender.

As for other players, Alfonso Soriano's name came up yesterday as the Cubs have now stated they are willing eat most of Soriano's contract if the right deal presented itself which sounds like they want some good prospects. Soriano is willing to waive his no trade clause which means he might be on the move. Also one has to look at the Rays a bit to see if they will deal anyone away considering they are lagging behind the Red Sox and Yankees. BJ Upton might be a possibility along with James Shields.

Whatever does get done, it better be quick. The deadline is less than ten days away.

Tiger Woods Dismisses Caddie

Tiger Woods' world seems to keep changing. He's taken some time off for injury and to get his head together. Okay, just guessing on the last part of that sentence. But that guess might not be that far off. Tiger Woods had fired his swing coach and now his caddie. Steve Williams, who had been Tiger's caddie for 12 years, has been dismissed by Tiger. Steve said he had no problem being fired, just disappointing in the timing of it. Tiger had won 72 events and 13 majors with Steve holding his golf clubs.

As significant as this story actually is, I can't help but laugh a little at it. When you think of a caddie, does anyone else think of a little boy trying to make a few bucks for some selfish rich dude at the local golf club. Instead, we are talking about a person who is nearly 50 and who is at least 10 years older than Tiger. I'm sure he gets great money for his services and there's more to it than just carrying golf clubs but I still chuckle at it.

Anyway, I guess Tiger will hire a new caddie when he eventually returns unless he wants to carry his own clubs. If you're a golf enthusiast, it will be interesting to see who he picks. If you're not, why are reading this article?

P.S. Also, why did I write this article?

P.P.S. Notice how I did not use "Caddie Shacked" for the title. It was hard but I resisted the pun.

A Concussion Lawsuit Against the NFL

The last few years have been awareness time for concussions in the NFL. There is no doubt they are a problem in football and the NFL has taken several steps to try and insure that they don't become an issue. Steps like protecting the quarterback, the wide receivers, harassing defenders, basically help the offense score more while limiting the defense. But the one thing the NFL wanted to avoid is a potential lawsuit over concussions. Too bad.

75 ex-NFL players are suing the NFL saying that the league intentionally withheld information about the effects of concussions for 90 years. Among the names included in the lawsuit are Otis Anderson, Rodney Hampton, and Mark Duper. A main issue in the lawsuit is that the ex-players are claiming that the league did not admit that concussions can effect memory, cause dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE until 2010. CTE has been linked to Chris Henry, a former Bengals WR who died over a year ago, and Dave Duerson, who used to play for most notably for the Bears and died earlier this year.

As the CBA agreement seems to be coming to a close, the NFL legal troubles are seemingly not over. The issue of concussions in football now gets presented in the courts. I doubt this kind of thing will hold up the CBA talks but it should make the players and owners think about how to address the issue. I'm not sure that anything can be added to the CBA to address the issue or if it's even a good idea at this point but the NFL will likely take further precautions to make sure that future lawsuits can be avoided.

Can Pirates Steal the NL Central?

The 2011 MLB season has many plot lines to follow and many teams to follow to see if they can make a playoff run. Perhaps the most intriguing regular season team to watch is the Pittsburgh Pirates. After being a losing team for as long as I can remember, the Pirates are finally contending... at least for now. They just won their third straight game by beating the Reds, 1-0, and have a .5 game lead over the Brewers in the NL Central and a 1.5 game lead over the Cardinals. The team is currently 51-44 with a couple more months to go in the season.

Now the big question surrounding the Buccos is whether or not they have the staying power to claim the Central all together. Their pitching seems to be their strong suit with a team ERA of 3.36, which is the lowest in the NL Central, while their hitting could use some improvement. While they do have a shot for that division, I wouldn't go all in on the black and yellow just yet. I can see them finishing over .500 but likely behind one of the other teams in the Central.

P.S. I'll change my mind about the Pirates provided they can win at least half of their next 10 games after this series with the Reds. They play 3 against the Cardinals, 4 against the Braves, and then 3 against the Phillies who currently have the best record in baseball at 60-36.

The Sun Rises for Japan

The Women's World Cup Final was today and this one is sure to stand the test of time both in rejoicing and heartbreak. The USA faced Japan and were the favorite heading into the match and it showed early on. The US Women's team had several opportunities to go ahead early in the first half and even put the game away but could not score a goal then. It was not until the second half did Alex Morgan score a goal in the 69' thanks to a great pass from Megan Rapinoe. Japan, however, didn't give up as they would score an equalizer in the 80'. Aya Miyama put it in net after the US failed tot clear it away. The game would remain tied and go into Extra Time.

There the US pressed again trying to get ahead of Japan. Abby Wambach had been silent all night until the 104' when she finally headed in a goal that would give the US the lead. The game continued into the second Extra Time period and the US had a win in sight. Once again, though, Japan refused to go away as Homare Sawa, the captain of the Japanese Women's team, scored a second equalizer in the 117' off a corner kick. The game would end with a 2-2 draw and would go to penalty kicks. It seemed the US had the advantage there but Ayumi Kaihori, the Japanese goalie, would take it away. The US failed to score on their first three kicks with two of them directly because of Kaihori. She made a couple of legendary stops while her side went up 2-0 through 3 kicks. Wambach would make it 2-1 but Saki Kumagai would seal the fate of the US knocking in the third goal for Japan in penalties. Japan wins in PK's, 3-1, after a 2-2 draw and win the Women's World Cup.

A remarkable story of a Cinderella team that could and would. Japan itself has had a very rough year with the tsunami back in the March and the nuclear threats after it. This win out of tragedy is truly remarkable and will no doubt lift Japan's spirits. Meanwhile, the US Women's side sees the Cup slip away again. A sad sight for the US to see their Women fail on the big stage for a third time in a row. It was a sensational spectacle to see the team to get to the final, especially with their win over Brazil in the quarters. It just wasn't meant to be for the US.

As great as the journey was for the US, it was even greater for Japan. They have never made it past the quarter-finals before this tournament and they break that barrier by defeating the two time defending champs and the hosts, themselves, Germany in a 1-0 match that had to go into extras. Then they take out another great squad in Sweden beating them 3-1. Finally, they go into the final against the US, a team they had never beaten before, and win in dramatic fashion. Congratulations on the win, Japan. This is your first World Cup title for either the men or the women's side and it came when your country needed it most.

Mistrial For Clemens

Well, looks like we've found out who the next luckiest a**hole in the world is.

The trial to determine whether Roger Clemens was lying or not in front of congress just began yesterday and already it's over. No, we haven't reached closing arguments. Hell, witnesses only just began to testify. What happened was the case was thrown out and called a mistrial. The judge made this ruling after the prosecution used a video that contained footage of evidence of a statement that was already deemed inadmissible. The Prosecution wanted to call Andy Pettite's wife, Laura, to the stand to back up Pettite's testimony that Clemens said that he used HGH. Laura, however, was not allowed to testify. The footage that set this whole thing off was of Rep. Elijah Cummings who referred to Laura's testimony. After the mistrial was declared, a court date was set for September 2 to determine whether or not there will be a new trial as the issue of Double Jeopardy now comes into play.

Just great. Another Steroid perjury case that goes nowhere. Instead of a grand jury, Clemens "supposedly" lied before congress. Much bigger deal yet pretty much the same result. Clemens is free to go. Sure Barry Bonds was convicted of Obstruction but that's minor. More cheaters get off the hook. Sure, it's not murder like the Casey Anthony trial but it's rich people cheating the system. Clemens is still guilty by far in the court of public opinion and will likely not get into the Hall of Fame but a actual Guilty verdict would've been nice.

P.S. Maybe I should let go. The Steroid Era has "ended" and I guess it's just better to move on but I rather have someone legally punished first. 0-2 so far. We can sink a few million more tax dollars, right?

K-Rod Traded But Mets Not Giving Up on Season?

Right after the All Star game, a major trade had happened. Francisco Rodriguez of the Mets was traded to the Brewers along with cash for two players yet to be named. While K-Rod is not playing his best, he's still doing well with a 3.16 ERA and 23 saves on the year. He will definitely be a solid addition to the Brewers as they are currently tied with the Cardinals for 1st in the NL Central and are one game in front of the Pirates. A very tight race will certainly help the Brewers down the stretch.

Despite the trade, the Mets are claiming they are not giving up on the season saying they are still trying to win games. This statement made by GM Sandy Alderson just seems like a PR move to try and keep the fans coming the games. They are 11 games behind the Phillies for the NL East and 7 1/2 games behind the Braves for the Wild Card. Now while getting either spot is still possible, I doubt they think they will be able to catch either team. If they are truly not giving up, why trade K-Rod then? True, money could be a factor as the Mets are seemingly in financial woes though they did send cash along with K-Rod to Milwaukee.

What is more realistic is that they are cleaning house and getting rid of things that are too expensive and trying to start over. Now the next possible move may be to get rid of Carlos Beltran or Jose Reyes. We will just have to wait and see if either player gets moved.

US Women Play Solid Encore

The US Women's Soccer Team played France today in the semi-final round of the Women's World Cup. Lauren Cheney scored the first goal 9 minutes in but the French would score early in the second half with Sonia Bompastor tying it up. The game would not go into another extra time affair, however. Abby Wambach didn't want late game heroics, just regulation heroics. Wambach headed in the go ahead goal in the 79'. Just a few minutes later, Alex Morgan scored an insurance goal. The USA would beat France, 3-1, and advance to the World Cup Final.

A fine performance by the US as they now go for history. They have a chance to now win a third World Cup Title. They will have to get by Japan to become World Champions again as they defeated Sweden, 3-1. The game is Sunday which is sure to have all the support the US can give. Okay, at least from their male pro athletes on Twitter.

The 2011 All Star Game

What All Star Game? 16 "All Stars" dropped from the roster (most ever) including Derek Jeter who wouldn't even go to waive to the fans after hitting 3000. It's become a hassle to many players who want to have enjoy their summer like everyone else. I feel sorry for these multi million dollar athletes that don't get a break during the summer. Instead, they have to play baseball every day instead of working two jobs just to make ends meet. Those poor bastards. Why didn't they become teachers? They get the whole summer off and the only downsides are having to deal with an immature next generation, having to work overtime during the school year, getting underpaid, and being yelled at by parents for telling them their child is an idiot. Lucky Elitists.

On a more serious note, barring an actual injury, play the All Star Game and give back to the people that make your job possible. If you don't want to play in Nazi-Arizona, I'll let it go but otherwise, get out there and play ball.

As for the actual All Star Game itself, still boycotting it. SELIG!!!

Robinson Cano is the Home Run Champion

The Home Run Derby was today and, as usual, I had every intention of watching it from start to finish. Okay, fine. To have it on while I played video games and to keep it muted most of the time. The kicker was that I still didn't get through round 1. Anyway, I looked it up and it seemed that Robinson Cano of the Yankees won the event with 12 homers hit in the last round to beat out Adrian Gonzalez of the Red Sox who had 11. Overall, Cano hit 32 total home runs. Also, in the sport of league vs. league, the AL demolished the NL with 76 home runs to 19.

I was starting to get a bit confused with the Home Run Derby for a while until I realized that it was essentially the same BS just with perceived added benefits that could've been added to the previous Home Run Derbys already played. What a great addition you idiots. Anyway, congrats to Cano who made his father, Jose Cano, proud of him. He better of since Jose was pitching to him. It was like little league batting practice with the family except with tens of thousands of people watching wondering if they will win a free taco this year. Hint, Hint; they won't.

First Half Reflections of the MLB 2011 Season

Today was the last games in baseball before the All Star Break. This is the unofficial halfway point of the 2011 MLB season. So how are we doing? In the AL, the Red Sox are a game in front of the Yankees for control of the AL East but this might be due to the fact that the Yanks have played two games less than Boston. The Tigers have a half game lead over the Indians in the Central, and the Rangers have a one game lead over the Angels in the West. In the NL, the East has the biggest divisional gap right now with the Phillies having a 3.5 game lead over the Braves. The Cardinals and Brewers are neck and neck while the Pirates are a game behind them in the Central. Finally, the defending champs, themselves, the Giants have a 3 game lead over the D'Backs in the West.

As for early award contenders, Jair Jurrjens has become the dark horse Cy Young Winner that has taken over that race in the NL. He has the most NL wins with 12 and the best ERA in the league with 1.87. A little more split for pitcher of the year in the AL while CC Sabathia has more wins with 13 but Jared Weaver has a better ERA with 1.86. Last time I checked, that mattered more. As for MVP candidates, Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez seem to be the main contenders as of now in the AL. The NL looks to me to be a bit more split between Prince Fielder, Lance Berkman, and Jose Reyes. Matt Kemp is also a good candidate to consider but is part of the Dodgers who are having a miserable year both on and off the field.

So what seems to be the trends going into the second half of the year? Despite the bad start, the Red Sox are contending with the Yanks for the AL East and the runner up will like be the Wild Card winner. The Cubs and the Twins have made me look like an idiot so far though the Twins could make a comeback. The Pirates have finally made themselves relevant again. And despite being one of the worst offensive teams in baseball and having quite a few injuries, the Giants are in front of the NL West race.

A nice first half with the division races still close and up for grabs.

USA Beats Brazil in Dramatic Fashion

The Women's World Cup continued this last weekend with the Quarterfinals. We have already seen a shocker with Germany being eliminated by Japan. How will the USA do against Brazil? Not sure if it was skill or more luck. The US got a goal early on thanks to an own goal by Daiane of Brazil. Later, however, Rachel Buehler got a red card in the 65' which led to a penalty kick which Marta made the second time due another questionable call by the ref. The game went into Extra Time which had Marta of Brazil score another goal in the early minutes. The US would not be left out, however, as they would score in added time of the second period of extra time thanks to a header by Abby Wambach. The game then went to penalties tied at 2-2 which the US would win, 5-3, and advance to the semifinals.

It was a great win for the US Women's team and one that might be remembered for all time provided that they win the Cup. They go on to face France who had just beaten England in penalties. On the other side of that bracket, Japan will face Sweden. Winners of the two games will face each other in the Final.

3000 in Style

Going back to the off season, Derek Jeter has had to face speculation that his time as a star had run up. His production has gone down, he's 37 years old, and when he was on the DL the team seemed to actually do better. Despite all the negative press around him, it all went away today. Derek Jeter, the Captain of the Yankees, had a career achievement today as he recorded his 3000th career hit. And how did he achieve it? In a home run in the 3rd inning off of David Price. What a way to become the first Yankee ever to record 3,000 hits. On top of that, he is the 28th player ever to reach the 3,000 hit club.

But Jeter was not done in that ballgame. He went 5-5 including hitting in the game winning run in the 8th with a single. It was all Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium. When the night was over, he was at 3,003 career hits.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

OKAY, NOW I REALLY AM STARTING TO HATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!

Ohio State, who had fired Jim Tressel (basically), has decided to vacate all their wins from the 2010 season including the Sugar Bowl victory that had followed it thanks to the NCAA allowing Tyrelle Pryor and friends to play the game. This, of course, has been done to try and avoid severe punishment from the NCAA like with the USC case. They are basically throwing themselves at the mercy of the bench while whipping their tender behinds with a flail.

This is crap. I said months ago these players ought to be suspended and Ohio State could've lost that game because of it. Instead, they play, win, and months later vacate the win. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE TO ANYBODY!!! If Ohio State is going to start vacating wins they should also be vacating money which they won't. Well at least they didn't beat Michigan last year now. "That makes up for all the scandals."

I'm getting really tired of all the College Athletics Scandals out in the country. Ohio State's in trouble, Oregon as well. Is there any clean program in the nation? If there is, please raise your hands... I'm only seeing BYU. Anyone else? No? DAMN IT!!!

Yao Ming Will Retire

Lockout or not, one player will not be coming back. Yao Ming, the 7'6 All Star for the Houston Rockets, is retiring from the game. One can only speculate this is due to the fact the Yao has suffered injury after injury for the last few seasons. He's basically been out for as long as this blog has been active (WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!) except for 5 games played this last season. Yao now retires way before he should've in the midst of a lockout that many don't know will end.

It's sad to hear Yao call it quits. You would've figured this be the perfect situation for him to make a solid comeback considering there might not be a NBA season. You also can't help but wonder his personal reasons for doing this. Sure he's injury prone but does he think that he is now? Might it be another reason? Is he leaving because of the Lockout?

But now is a time to reflect. It seems like it was only yesterday he was drafted by the Rockets and making his presence known. He actually had some good years as their center only to have it be taken away by injuries. He also had a special impact on a international level making basketball more popular in China and even being part of the Chinese Olympic team. He may not have had a Hall of Fame career but I think Yao needs to at least be considered for the Hall for what he has done for the game of basketball as a whole.

Is Deron Williams Starting a Trend?

The NBA Lockout leaves a lot of us wondering how long will the NBA be out for and that question has crossed the players minds. In fact, it seems to have influenced a slight career move for one of them. Deron Williams, a point guard for the New Jersey Nets and previously for the Utah Jazz, has agreed in principal to a one year $5 million contract with Besiktas, a Turkish club that had signed Allen Iverson last year. What makes this even sweeter is the fact that Williams can leave the team when the NBA Lockout is over and Basketball returns to the USA.

What a deal. A lot of money and really no hard commitment. I mean sure he'll have to play but he has a way to leave when the NBA comes back into session. It makes you wonder how many players in the NBA will go over to Europe and play for a club there. This Turkish Club, Besiktas, says they want to go after Kobe Bryant as well. Imagine Williams and Bryant together and not on a NBA team. Sure, playing overseas does not get you the same monetary benefit as it does here but it's still a pretty penny for the players and it's a great way to keep in shape and skills sharp.

China is another possible place to go. They seem to be getting into the game. I don't know if more Elite NBA Players will go overseas like Williams or Bryant but it would be interesting to see how they will be treated worldwide.

Return of Jeter and Pujols

This week in baseball sees the return of a couple of All Stars from the DL. First was Derek Jeter who returned Monday to face the Indians on the road which the Yankees lost, 6-3, and Jeter was 0-4. Jeter's second game back was much better as he went 2-6 with a double and 2 RBI's in a Yankees win over the Indians, 9-2. Now in game three of the series, Jeter was 1-3 with a BB while the Yankees lost, 5-3. Now the Yankees go home for a 4 game series with the Rays while Jeter continues his search for 3,000 hits as he is now just 3 hits away. If Jeter wants to accomplish this feat at home, he'll need to do it during this series or it will have to be done on the road where the Yanks have 8 straight road games after the All Star Break.

The other player to return this week was Albert Pujols as he made his return last night. Pujols had apparently broken his forearm that seemed to send him to the DL for at least a month but doctors say he is healthy and ready to play. His return last night was sort of eventful as Pujols had a RBI single as part of a 5 run seventh inning. That was his only hit of the game, though, as he went 1-6. The Reds would avoid the sweep and an humiliating loss by getting a run in extras and beating Pujols and the Cardinals, 9-8. Not the best return but better than Jeter's first game back.

What is funny about all of this is while Pujols and Jeter are back, Jose Reyes and Jon Lester looks like they will taking their places on the DL.

The Undisputed Eater?

Happy 4th of July everyone. It's time again to enjoy our freedom and liberty while we watch the biggest gluttons chow down as many hot dogs as they can. Joey Chestnut came in as the 4 time defending champion of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. There seemed to be no one in the field that could rival Chestnut though Pat Bertoletti would stay alongside Chestnut for a while. In the end, it was all Joey who downed 62 Dogs which was 9 in front of Bertoletti who came in second. Chestnut wins the Mustard Seed Belt for a fifth year in a row.

While I am happy that Chestnut won the most disgusting event all year, I can't help but wonder if the contest has lost some flavor to it. Major League Eating has kept out the 7 time winner of the event, Takeru Kobayashi, for a second year in a row after Kobayashi refused to sign exclusively with them. Last year, Kobayahsi rushed the stage and got arrested. What did he do this year? He staged his own hot dog eating contest by downing 69 dogs during the actual contest, a mark that would've beaten Chestnut's. Now Kobayashi's attempt shouldn't be taken seriously but still it raises the question whether he should be allowed to eat or not because of MLE.

Either way, congrats to Joey Chestnut on retaining the Mustard Seed Belt for a 5th year. And also congrats to Sonya Thomas for winning the first ever Women's edition of the contest with 40 hot dogs. What kind of belt does she get?

P.S. Also, is this thing starting to become mainstream. What is hell is Nick Cannon doing there?

Djokovic Claims First Wimbledon Title!!!

This year had been Novak Djokovic's year. He won the Australian Open back in January and he has beaten Nadal 4 times. Unfortunately, for him, he hasn't beaten Rafael Nadal in any Grand Slam match. He would have to achieve that first at Wimbledon and in the final no less. Djokovic has already done well enough to claim the #1 spot in the world when the tournament was over. Now it was time for him to prove he is #1. Man, did he ever. He would beat Nadal in 4 sets 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 and claim the 2011 Men's Wimbledon Title. It is Djokovic's first ever Wimbledon Title and the second Grand Slam event he has conquered.

I must admit I'm a Rafa fan but quite frankly it always great to see a first time winner at Wimbledon. It makes things very interesting in the tennis world. What might be more significant in this year's Wimbledon tournament is the fact that Roger Federer was eliminated before the Semifinal round. Again, speculation arises as to how long Federer can keep playing.

This moment, though, belongs to a couple of players who have never won Wimbledon until now. Congrats to both Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova on winning your first Wimbledon Titles.

The Ultimate Heavyweight

The big multi Heavyweight Title fight was last night and featured two champions of the Heavyweight World. Wladimir Klitschko faced off against David Haye. Despite doing much trash talking leading up to the fight, David Haye couldn't deliver against Klitschko later claiming part of it was due to a broken toe he had sustained weeks ago. Wladimir won the fight and David Haye's WBA title by unanimous decision. Klitschko now adds that title to his other 3. He and his brother, Vitali, have all the major Heavyweight Titles though Vitali only has one. Looks like the Klitschko brothers are the only game in town on the Heavyweight level with Wladimir wearing the most belts.

Kvitova Beats Sharapova for Wimbledon Title

The Wimbledon Finals are here and the Ladies side has already been determined. Maria Sharapova played against Petra Kvitova for her first Wimbledon title since 2004. Sharapova was favored to win and dominate the match. Ironically, it went the other way. Kvitova dominated the match and won her first Grand Slam Title 6-3, 6-4. Kvitova's mindset helped her claim victory over Sharapova who was surprisingly off in this match. It must be a big personal morale boost knowing your first Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon. Congrats to to the left handed Kvitova. Only 21 and a bright future ahead.

Another League in Lockout

For my 700th post and my first one in July, let's talk about the NBA Lockout that has just started with the changing of the months. The big topic of of every labor dispute is money. Most of the teams have said they are losing money during the previous CBA and want things to radically change when it comes to paying players. That includes fighting over guaranteed money, contract lengths, and even installing a hard salary cap to replace the soft salary cap system. The two sides are very far apart on this issue and by David Stern's tone it may get even worse.

Alright!!! A possibility of almost no basketball!!!

Okay, fine. Being a bit more serious, I guess it would be bad for any basketball to be lost. Still, like the NFL, I would like to see how people would react with no basketball. By accounts of many analysts, there seems to be a good possibility of missing games if not the entire NBA Season. The two sides seem to be that divided. Of course, there is also some dispute among owners like the possibility of creating a revenue sharing system like in the NFL. Because the majority of NBA Franchises seem to be doing that bad, all sides will bunker down for a while and talks will likely be slow to accomplish anything.

When the dust does settle, I don't see the players benefiting at all from the new CBA. If players are getting paid way too much to prevent any profit for owners being generated, the owners will make sure the players will get a pay cut. As for if there will be a season, I think there will be one but a significantly shorter one. I don't expect any basketball for the rest of the calendar year.

P.S. Unless you want to watch some College Hoops.
