Today, the Giants beat the Phillies, 2-1, in Philadelphia with some solid pitching by Matt Cain and the bullpen. After today, they are currently a few games in front of the D'Backs and look like they will take the West (for now). The Defending World Champions, however, feel obligated to not only take the West but the World Series for a second year in a row. Who can blame them for that feeling? After giving San Francisco their first World Series Title ever, they would like to give them another. So, what do they do? They improve on their offense that desperately needs a solid hitter. The Giants would do that by trading for Carlos Beltran of the Mets. Part of the deal includes the Giants giving the Mets one of their pitching prospects, Zach Wheeler.
While I like the move, I would've been fine without it. It's not that I don't want another World Series Title, I do. It's just that I don't think we should be trading away part of our future in order to get it. Now grant it, it's a pitching prospect and everyone know we have enough pitching right now. "Right now" being the key words. Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner are all young and have full careers ahead of them but who's to say they will all be with the Giants? If one leaves and we don't have a proper pitcher to replace them, the Giants could fall out of contention for another World Title pretty fast.
But I must admit, it gives us better chances now. For years, I've wanted the Giants to make a big name acquisition mid-season but they didn't do it. Instead, they bulked up on great pitchers and somewhat skilled hitters and managed to get a World Series Title that way. Now that we have made this kind of trade, I don't know if it's really worth it. If the Giants win the World Series this year, I will be happy and never criticize the front office again (likely will forget that promise as soon as I post this). But if they don't win and don't manage to keep Beltran for a few more seasons, we might've wasted part of our future for nothing.
P.S. Also, there has been no back-to-back champions for the last 10 seasons.
P.P.S. Beltran, please make me eat Crow.
