The Women's World Cup continued this last weekend with the Quarterfinals. We have already seen a shocker with Germany being eliminated by Japan. How will the USA do against Brazil? Not sure if it was skill or more luck. The US got a goal early on thanks to an own goal by Daiane of Brazil. Later, however, Rachel Buehler got a red card in the 65' which led to a penalty kick which Marta made the second time due another questionable call by the ref. The game went into Extra Time which had Marta of Brazil score another goal in the early minutes. The US would not be left out, however, as they would score in added time of the second period of extra time thanks to a header by Abby Wambach. The game then went to penalties tied at 2-2 which the US would win, 5-3, and advance to the semifinals.
It was a great win for the US Women's team and one that might be remembered for all time provided that they win the Cup. They go on to face France who had just beaten England in penalties. On the other side of that bracket, Japan will face Sweden. Winners of the two games will face each other in the Final.
