Doesn't feel so great when a QB gets tag, uh?
The Saints and Drew Brees were trying to reach a new deal for the long term in order for Drew to stay in New Orleans. Right now, Brees isn't going anywhere, at least in the short term. The Saints applied the exclusive rights franchise tag on Brees and will now have the QB for another year as they try to sort out a long term deal in the process. As for current negotiations on that deal, the team and Brees are still a few million apart.
At least the Saints will be relevant for next season. Problem is that they used possibly the biggest dick move an owner has in order to do it. I'm sure that Brees wants to stay with the team but he wants to be paid a fair amount. Instead of the Saints being fair, they said he was a "very good" QB (not great) and tagged him instead. What the hell is wrong with the Saints? Before Drew came to town, your playoff history was pratically nonexistent. He helps you win a Super Bowl and you low ball him? Not cool, Saints.
Maybe I am hyping this situation more than deserved. Maybe the two sides will be able to reach an agreement within the coming weeks and this will just be a bump in the road. But this is still not the way to treat a "great" QB like Drew Brees.
