Last night capped off Week 15 in a bit of dramatic fashion. The Steelers went into San Francisco to face the 49ers on Monday Night Football. It was the 49ers last home game of the season and it was a doozy of a match up. Both teams had something to play for despite both already having a postseason spot. The Steelers were looking to continue their bid for the #1 seed in the AFC while the 49ers wanted to stay on track for the #2 seed in the NFC which would get them a bye week in the postseason. For positioning sake, each team needed a win.
This great game, however, was actually delayed by about 20 minutes as a transformer went down in the area causing the whole stadium to black out. I tried to reach out to Optimus Prime to see if he knew anything about it. Still no comment. Anyway, the game started and the injured Big Ben Roethlisberger looked shaky from the start throwing 2 INTs in their first two drives. Luckily for the Steelers, they only resulted in two FGs for the 49ers.
Then in the middle of the 2nd quarter the lights went out again causing a 16 minute delay. Another crazy power problem for this game but it would resume and it was 6-0 in favor of the 49ers at the half. The Steelers would manage a FG in the 3rd quarter from Suisham but the 49ers answered with a 1 yard TD pass to Vernon Davis off a very convincing play action pass by Alex Smith. Later the 49ers would get the ball in favorable field position in the 4th quarter due to a Big Ben fumble. Thanks to a questionable ref call on a FG attempt by Akers, the 49ers got another chance on the drive and scored a TD via a Frank Gore 5 yard TD run. The Steelers couldn't solve the 49ers defense and Big Ben even through one more INT in the game. The 49ers win their last home game of the year, 20-3.
A big win for the 49ers as they were 1-2 in their last three games entering last night. This big win for the team gets a bunch of that momentum back and helps them moving forward. Of course everyone now questions whether or not Big Ben should've played seeing that his ankle injury kept him from being the mobile QB everyone knows. Now the Steelers are technically behind the Ravens in the AFC North.
As for the 49ers, they manage to stay the course for the 2 seed. I thought the Steelers would knock them off course but the 49ers were having none of that. 49ers have two games left having to face the Seahawks and then the Rams. They will most likely need to win out to secure the 2 seed but they might be able to claim it this weekend if the 49ers win and the Saints lose to the Falcons which could happen.
