Baseball Yesterday and the Return of Pedro

Baseball had some good stories yesterday. The one good one I saw was the Giants beating the Dodgers. This was really a must win for the Giants (in a way) in order to keep pace with the Rockies. They had been beaten by the Dodgers two times now in this series and the walk off shot from Juan Uribe was just what the Giants needed for a morale boost.

The Red Sox were just swept by the Yankees and needed to win some games. Now they've taken 3 of four so far from the Tigers in this series. After the fight that landed Youkillis with a five game suspension, the Red Sox continued the aggression by winning again today 8-2 with Beckett getting his MLB best 14th win of the season. Here's hoping for the four game sweep after being swept in four.

Meanwhile, former Red Sox Pedro Martinez made his 2009 debut with a new team: the Phillies. He pitched 5 innings, 3 earned runs, 5 strike outs, and 99 pitches. Pedro can still pitch over 90 pitches in the game but needs help getting beyond the 5th inning. Thanks to a wild 8 run 4th inning, the Phillies get Pedro's first win of the year. It is too bad that the Phillies put Jamie Moyer in the bullpen. He had won 10 games and didn't seem like he deserved to lose the spot. Though I must say he has 9 loses and an ERA of 5.47.

The Marlins lost to the Astros 14-6 Giving the Phillies a bit more cushion in the East Division. The Yankees did win thanks to Cano's game winning hit in the 11th and the Rockies kept dominating with a 8-0 win over the Pirates. I'm starting to think they are better than the Giants and might make another amazing run into the postseason. Also with the Cubs losing, they fall more behind in the division thanks to the Cardinals winning.

I hope that the Red Sox offense will stay hot. It seems like they have found their groove these last few days back in Boston. But regrettably this sport in more about slumps and streaks than any other sport I can think of. It just depends on when they happen to determine the winners and losers of the year.
