Three years ago, the Packers made a conscious choice of trading Brett Favre away in favor of their back up and future of the team, Aaron Rodgers. Many questioned the decision saying it may have been too early to let the legend go. Today proved that the Packers organization made the right choice.
Super Bowl XLV had arrived in Cowboys Stadium with the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Green Bay Packers. The media build up was over and it was go time. The Packers struck first with a 29 yard TD pass from Rodgers to Jordy Nelson to get them a 7-0 lead. Then Nick Collins would score a TD with an INT off Big Ben Roethlisberger to get a 14-0 lead. Eventually, the Packers would get a 21-3 lead off another TD pass from Rodgers, this time to Greg Jennings.
The Steelers would not give up, however, as Hines Ward caught a TD pass near the end of the 1st half and then Rashard Mendenhall scored a TD on the ground in the third quarter. Rodgers would throw another TD pass to Jennings in the 4th after a fumble recovery by Desmond Bishop when Mendenhall lost the Ball. Big Ben still showed his experience as he threw a TD pass to Mike Wallace followed by a Antwaan Randle El two point conversion with a running play. The Packers would drive down field for one more score off a Mason Crosby Field Goal to give them a 6 point lead with 2:07 to go. The Steelers would get it back but failed to convert a fourth down pass to Mike Wallace. Packers win the game and take back the Lombardi Trophy, 31-25.
A great game to watch, especially when things got tight in the 2nd half. The difference in the end was the turnovers committed by the Steelers: 2 INTs and 1 fumble, and it cost them points each time. The Packers, meanwhile had a rough night at times as Rodgers had some frustrating plays on offense. Though MVP of the game with 304 passing yards and 3 TD passes, he had a few bad throws and it seemed like his receivers where dropping some key passes. They also struggled with the running game only getting 50 yards on the ground. But they didn't commit the turnovers and they capitalized on ones committed by the Steelers.
What a year for the Packers. They started the year rough with some injuries and managed to squeeze into the playoffs. They then won 3 road games in the postseason to just get to Dallas. Winning the Lombardi trophy was a tough win over the never say die Steelers but they accomplished that too. Aaron Rodgers wins his first Super Bowl in just his third season as the Packers starting QB. Just like Steve Young, Rodgers has successfully gotten rid of his predecessor's shadow.
Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers on getting their 13th NFL Title and their 4th Super Bowl Title. The small city is once again on top of the world.
P.S. WHO CALLED IT!!!
