In early September, the Red Sox had a 9 game lead in the AL Wild Card and practically had a seat reserved for October. I must say a lot can change in a month. August was crap for the Giants and September was crap for the Red Sox. The Sox were 83-52 to start the month. After their loss to the Orioles just last night, 4-3, they finished the season 90-72. Only 7 wins in the month of September. 7 FOR F**K'S SAKE!!! We lost 20 games in this month alone. This is an inexcusable drop off.
Meanwhile, the Rays were 74-61 to start the month. At the end, they finished with a 91-71 record winning 17 of their 27 games in the month including beating the Yankees last night, who had a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the 8th, in walk off fashion thanks to a Longoria Home Run in the bottom of the 12th by a final of 8-7. Rays have won 6 of their last 7 games and are entering the postseason as the AL Wild Card team instead of the Sox.
At least the Red Sox aren't the only horrible team screwing up leads. The Braves had just as big a collapse if not a bit bigger. Sorry, Atlanta, have to bash someone else to feel good. They had a 10 1/2 game lead over the Cardinals in late August and a 8 1/2 game lead over them in early September. They too squandered their playoff spot by having a bad month and by losing last night to the Phillies, 4-3, while the Cardinals destroyed the Astros, 8-0.
There it is, folks. The Cardinals and the Rays are in the postseason instead of the Braves and the Red Sox. Two monumental collapses at the same time. Both my World Series Picks, Red Sox and Giants, are out and they're both my favorite teams. This is going to be one long October.
P.S. Tune into the Sports Khan today at 4 PM on KSUNradio.com... Pretty Good... If I'm not depressed.
