Novak Djokovic entered the French Open looking to win his 4th Grand Slam in a row and to do it by winning the tournament for the first time. After the tournament's conclusion, Roland Garros is still on Djokovic's to do list.
Unluckily for him the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, was still around and in the final round against the Joker himself. Rafa was still in his prime and looking to climb the Grand Slam Title ladder some more with a win over Djokovic. The match was started yesterday but was delayed sometime in the middle of it due to rain and resumed this morning. Rafa would be the man to finish on top to start the week off as he beat Djokovic and clinching it on a double fault. Nadal wins 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 and takes his modern era record 7th French Open Title.
Congrats to Rafa and sorry to Djokovic as he will have to wait another year to complete his career slam... that is if he doesn't want to go to Denny's. Rafa proves he still owns the legendary clay court at Roland Garros and is unquestionably the king of the tournament itself. While Djokovic winning would have been history in a way, Nadal getting his 7th French Title is just worth so much more. He still has a way to go on the career Grand Slam mark but he now has 11 Grand Slam Titles which ties him at 4th with Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.
For those who wanted to see a career Grand Slam, should've watched Saturday. I didn't and forgot to look up the score for the women's side. Yes, I should be more attentive but I always feel like Roland Garros gets the least amount of attention of all the Grand Slam events. Anyway, Maria Sharapova won the French open on the women's side for the first time ever in her career and completed here career Grand Slam. She beat Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2 to win the tournament. Congrats to her and Rafa... onto Wimbledon.
