The first day of the new year means the last day of the regular season in the NFL. Yesterday had a bunch of great games but the highlight of it all was the Sunday Night Game between the Cowboys and the Giants with the winner going to the playoffs. Tony Romo had a injured and swelled throwing hand and had to deal with Giants D-line that had pressure on Romo all day. 7 Sacks were recorded for the Giants defense. Meanwhile, Eli Manning and Victor Cruz had great performances exploiting the Rob Ryan led Cowboys defense. Cruz had 6 catches for 178 yards and 1 TD. Giants would win this one, 31-14, and claim the NFC East title along with literally the last playoff spot. Cowboys once again have a disappointing season.
Another playoff spot that was fought for earlier in the day was the AFC West spot. All the Broncos needed to do was beat the Chiefs and they were in. This game was a low scoring game which is what the Broncos wanted. Unfortunately they didn't score a TD while the Chiefs scored one. The Chiefs won the game, 7-3. This loss means that the Raiders had a chance to take the AFC West. The Raiders, however, couldn't get the win and lost, 38-26, to the Chargers. So basically the Broncos lose but still get into the playoffs as the AFC West Champions thanks to tie breaker rules.
As for the rest of the NFL, the Pats would eventually get by the Bills, 49-21. This win gets them the #1 seed in the AFC. The Ravens manage to beat the Bengals, 24-16. The Ravens claim the #2 spot in the AFC while the Bengals still get into the playoffs as a Wild Card team. Why? Jets lost to the Dolphins, 19-17 (I Think. It's hard to follow all the formulas). Last ones I'll mention is the Falcons decimated the Bucs, 45-24, and claim the #5 Seed in the postseason thanks to their win and the Lions loss to the Packers, 45-41. The Falcons are the top Wild Card team in the NFC.
The season is over and the playoffs start next weekend. For round one of the playoffs the AFC will feature the Bengals vs. the Texans and the Steelers vs. the Broncos while the Pats and the Ravens take a week off. Round one in the NFC will feature the Lions vs. the Saints and the Falcons vs. the Giants while the Packers and the 49ers take the week off. Which of these teams will be in the Super Bowl? How should I know? I'm trying to hide from my original picks.
