You've heard of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Kill Me Now 24th but have you heard of Black Monday. It is perhaps the most feared day of the year for NFL coaches who fell below of team expectations. It's the day when firings start. We have had already a few head coach firings this season but with Black Monday yesterday we saw some more. Steve Spagnuolo of the Rams was fired after his team went 2-14 and Raheem Morris was fired after losing 10 games to end the season as the Bucs Head Coach. As for some management, Billy Devaney was fired as Rams GM, and Bill and his son Chris Polian have been fired from their jobs as Vice Chairman and GM of the Colts respectively. Some positive news for hiring was somewhat made as it appears Jeff Fisher will be interviewed for the Head Coaching jobs of the Rams and Dolphins.
A lot of news to digest. In today's NFL, you have to always be improving or have a damn good reason for setback. Spagnuolo and Morris had neither of those excuses so off they went. I honestly thought both of their respective teams would do better this year. The Rams were 7-9 and contenders for the NFC West last season with Sam Bradford but were just awful this year. As for the Bucs, they actually started off on the right foot but somehow fell apart for the last ten games. I was a fool for picking this team for the Super Bowl but the way the team and Josh Freeman performed in 2010 it seemed like the Bucs were going to take a step forward, not backwards.
I'm sure both of these guys will gets some coordinator offers somewhere. Okay, at least Spagnuolo. As for Fisher, if my final choices this season were the Rams or Dolphins, I would be tempted to just wait a year for something else. But that's a first glance reaction. To be honest, both look like good spots. Tom Brady and the Pats can't hold the AFC East forever while the Jets and Bills look like shaky teams right now. As for the Rams, if Fisher can develop Bradford further, he would have a solid #2 team at least in the NFC West.
P.S. Fisher, please take your schemes to South Beach. Matt Moore deserves a solid coach for another chance and it's very sunny there. You'll have to play in a dome in St. Louis.
