Just under 3 years ago, Josh McDaniels left the nest of the New England Patriots to pursue his dream as a head coach in the NFL. He took the head coaching job in Denver after 7 years of being with the Patriots. As we all know, McDaniels didn't last two full seasons in Denver with the most notable thing he did was draft Tim Tebow. Last season, he was the Offensive Coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. With Bill O'Brien leaving the Patriots as the current Offensive Coordinator to go to Penn State, the Pats and McDaniels reached an agreement to make him the new OC at the beginning of next season. McDaniels, however, is coming back to the Pats this postseason as an offensive assistant.
If you are a Pats fan, this seems like good news. McDaniels was the OC when the team was 16-0 in 2007 and broke a ton of offensive scoring records. I sort of feel bad for McDaniels having failed as a head coach but not every great Coordinator in the league can make it as a Head Coach in the NFL. Some just work better as coordinators. Maybe McDaniels will get another Head Coaching shot down the road. He's only 35 and has plenty of time to make another impression in some GM's mind. If that opportunity does knock on McDaniels door again, he better not screw it up again.
P.S. What the Pats really need is an old Defensive Coordinator to come back. Someone call Romeo Crennel.
