BYU Dismisses Davies and Then Loses to the Lobos

BYU has been on a great run this year as they are #3 in the country and are looking to wrap up a #1 seed in the tournament. Jimmer Fredette is shooting the ball well and the team is solid around him... or at least it was. Brandon Davies has been dismissed from the team for violating the school's Honor Code Policy. Davies was the team leader in rebounds averaging 6.2 a game. The Cougars played their first game without Davies and it did not go so well. The Cougars lost, 82-64, against the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos had 4 players score 10 or more points in the game while the Cougars only had 1 player and that was Jimmer Fredette with 33 points.

Bad week for BYU as a top player is gone and they have lost their first game they've played since his dismissal. But still you have to sort of admire BYU for standing by their Honor Code and dismissing Davies. A lot of Universities could learn from their continual example to adhere to principals (Auburn, Florida, USC, Tennessee, etc.). True, it was for something the common person consider trivial nowadays (making the beast with two backs) but BYU is a religious institution that puts there policy on everyone that goes there. They make sure prospects (and potential students) know the Honor Code and that they stick to it.

I hope the Cougars still do well for the rest of the season but this loss may be a sign that they are not ready for a #1 seed.
