Last year's champions, Duke, entered the Sweet 16 to face #5 seed, Arizona. Arizona had just beaten the Texas and looked to continue their momentum against Duke. They did just that. Despite trailing at halftime, 44-38, the Wildcats came out of the break and scored 55 2nd half points. Arizona would beat the defending champs, 93-77. Derrick Williams was the big scorer for Arizona with 32 points but most of those came in the first half. Impressive game by this Wildcat team in the clutch. As to who they will face in the Elite 8, it turns out to be UConn who beat San Diego State, 74-67, effectively ending the Aztecs great season.
As for the other Mountain West team, BYU came into the Sweet 16 against a team they had beaten last year in the tournament, Florida. This game was hard to predict and by end of regulation, we still didn't have a winner. In OT, however, Florida pulled away from the Cougars scoring 15 points against BYU's 6. Florida wins, 83-74, despite Jimmer Fredette's 32 points, and goes on to the Elite 8. Who will face Florida? It's Butler as last year's Cinderella team keeps going by beating Wisconsin, 61-54. Matt Howard was the teams best player with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 steals.
The Champs fall and BYU is out. The remaining 4 games of the Sweet 16 are today.
