The 'Pimps' of Football

There are more recruiting scandals involving NCAA teams and it's not USC. It's with several SEC teams and it actually involves players already in school and looking forward to the NFL. Players from Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida have implicated in illegal behavior with agents that represent players in the NFL. Accusations range from accepting money from agents to attending parties arranged by agents. The schools, themselves, seemed to not be the offenders while the current rules only allows the NCAA to punish the schools involved and not the agents or the players. Nick Saban has commented on these events comparing the agents to the role of a pimp. Perhaps a little harsh to call agents pimps but they had it coming.

It would seem unfair if the NCAA were to punish the schools for these violations. These alleged acts were made between players and agents, not the universities. They might get a slap on the wrist for appearances sake but I wouldn't expect anything too serious. While the NCAA can't punish the agents or players now, they can still do something. The NCAA can change the rules and make it punishable for the players to sign with these agents too early and accept gifts. As for the agents, I'm not sure what the NCAA can do but the NFL could step in and help the NCAA by punishing agents involved in this sort of thing by suspending their license for a period of time. These changes must be made in order to maintain fairness in the NCAA.
