The 49ers played their NFC West rivals, the St. Louis Rams. With the season hanging by a thread, the 49ers played to kept it alive. There was one constant for them in this game: Penalties. They committed 14 penalties in which three of them took away TDs they would've scored. Still the 49ers hang in the game. On a tough drive, Troy Smith lead the red and gold for a TD pass to Michael Crabtree with 2:10 to go in regulation. That would give the Rams just enough time to drive down the field and kick a Field Goal to send it into OT. The 49ers defense forced the Rams to punt after St. Louis won the toss. The 49ers manage to then get into field goal range for Joe Nedney to win the game, 23-20.
Troy Smith impressed many with his composure through the penalties and the obstacles, perhaps winning the role of starting QB for good. I certainly hope so. I'm also proud of our defense keeping us in scoring range. They still have a miracle to go but it's a start.
