2010 NFC West Preview: A Golden Opportunity

The Wild Wild West got crazier over the off season with many moves all around. Kurt Warner's retirement has left a gaping hole for the Cardinals that neither Matt Leinart nor Derek Anderson can fill. Whoever they choose, they will just have Larry Fitzgerald to throw to in double coverage thanks to the departure of Anquan Boldin. The Rams do get Sam Bradford which, no doubt, will be in development this year which has been made tougher thanks to the season ending injury of Donnie Avery. Seattle seems unchanged except for their new head coach, Pete Carroll. Seattle could be a dark horse team but one of their "has been" WR's has to step up for Matt Hasselbeck.

So who do I think will win the NFC West: The 49ers!!! Perhaps the most stable NFC West team during the off season working off a 8-8 2009 season. They have a talented WR in Michael Crabtree, a top TE with Vernon Davis, Frank Gore who can run with bursts of speed, a defense that has shown it can be great, and some new additions for that offensive line. There is no excuse why the 49ers shouldn't claim the NFC West... except for Alex Smith. Now Smith did have his best season yet last year with 18 TDs, 12 INTs, and a passer rating of 81.5, but he has proven to be a sloppy QB for most of his career. Smith is the only question mark on this team. If he has a great year, then the 49ers will get into the playoffs. If he waivers, I'll be the first person to run him out of the SF Bay Area. Where is my pitchfork?
