The good news is that Joe Mauer is not leaving the team at the end of the year. Mauer gets an 8 year extension with the Twins that is worth #184 Million. I didn't know the Twins got a bailout. Also their is a No Trade clause in that extension. Mauer won't be going anywhere during that tenure unless he waives the clause (I assume considering Halladay did the same thing). Mauer will stay home and get a lot of money at the same time.
It's not all good news though for the Twins however. The bad news is that Joe Nathan, the closer, will have surgery on his elbow that will cause him to miss the entire 2010 Season. He had a great year last year with 47 saves and a 2.10 ERA. That is a big spot that needs to filled. It is hard to find a good closer in the Majors and the Twins will most likely struggle because of it. Despite keeping Mauer, the Twins will have a difficult time repeating as AL Central champions.
