Now this sounds like a situation that would be null and void if we had a playoff system in College Football. But I've already hit this bell once or twice... okay, every Saturday. Apparently how it stands, Boise State would likely be the the #1 team when the BCS Standings come out for the first time this weekend. While there is no doubt in my mind that they won't stay there by season's end or even be in the top two, do they deserve the number 1 spot at all? My answer is yes.
I'm not just saying this because I like the Broncos a lot but because of their overall work material over the past two seasons. Critics of this thought process will say "you can't base anything on the season before." But that's just it. College Football analysts do it all the time. They give out poll numbers at the beginning of the year for heavens sake. That is partially based on who's returning the next season. A lot of starters from Boise State's team are returning Seniors so you have to look at last years' performance. They are 19-0 going back to last season.
As for the argument of they don't have worthy opponents to face or they wouldn't stand up to a BCS Conference schedule... I don't have an argument. It's not Boise State's fault they got TCU in the Fiesta Bowl instead of a BCS team. All I can say is that how you look at a school is based on their history and BSU have looked very good in the past few years winning two Fiesta Bowls. Notre Dame is still regarded as a good program and they stink. If there is a Non BCS team that deserves a chance at a National Title, it's Boise State of 2010... assuming they don't lose. In that case, I take everything back.
P.S. This controversy can all go away with a Playoff System.
