Back in 2007, David Beckham signed a 5 year contract with the LA Galaxy and instantly brought more attention to MLS. During Beckham's US Tour there arose problems between him and the popular Galaxy player, Landon Donovan. This uneven relationship didn't seem to be aided by the fact the team had yet to win an MLS Cup while Beckham was here.
Let's fast forward to last night. It was possibly David Beckham's last game with the LA Galaxy and in MLS for that matter and it featured his team going up against the Houston Dynamo for the MLS Cup at the Home Depot Center, the home stadium for LA. Both teams were well prepared and took the pitch wanting to claim the title. A rather mediocre first half with some close chances for the Galaxy but the team failed to capitalize. The 2nd half came and still nothing right away. The game would have to wait until the 72' when Beckham managed to get it to Robbie Keane who then set up Landon Donovan for a Beautiful tap in shot for the goal. A well done run leads to a score. The Galaxy manage to hold on for the rest of the match defensively and win it, 1-0.
The LA Galaxy are MLS Cup Champions. Definitely better than the Tony Stewart win. How Much? SO MUCH!!! After all that has been invested into this team and the year after year of falling short finally pay off as LA manage to win it all and at home. Donovan, of course, was MVP of the match but a great job by the whole team, including David Beckham. I feel a bit sorry for the Dynamo as the story all along was the Galaxy and this win. Maybe next year, Houston.
Speculation, of course, begins again whether David Beckham will stay or go. He has brought more attention to the sport and the sport has grown significantly while he was here. Not to the level soccer fans and investors would want but it has risen. Whatever Beckham's choice is, that is for later. For now, Congratulations LA Galaxy. You finally get the ending you've wanted for five years.
