One of the most unimaginable things has happened within the context of the sports world. Jerry Sandusky, who was the heir apparent to Penn State football, has been indicted for over 40 counts of sexual abuse with young boys over a 15 year period. Sandusky, though retired when most of these allegations had occured, still maintained a presence on campus and ran a charity program involving young boys from there. It appears Sandusky was sexually abusing boys during this time on campus. Joe Paterno, head coach of the Penn State football program, had apprently found out about the actions of Sandusky through rumor in 2002 and informed his superiors on campus. His superiors had apprently failed to report the incident and even lied about it during a grand jury investiagtion. AD Tim Curley and VP Gary Schultz have resigned after being charged for failing to report the incident and purjery.
As for what is happening with Joe Paterno himself, there is much doubt. It appears that Joe Pa won't be charged with anything as he seems to have done the "legal requirements." Past that, though, there is mystery. Joe Pa was supposed to have had a press conference today just about this Sunday's football game but it was cancelled by the president of the university. Now we here reports that the board of trustees is discussing how to manage Joe Pa's departure. It seems that Joe Paterno might be on the way out but he has said he has had no talks with anyone there about stepping down.
This whole thing is just shocking, to say the least. Penn State football is one of the most prestigious football programs in history because of Joe Paterno and now there is a huge abuse scandal involing one of the most sickening things imaginable that is just tearing it all down. From what I'm hearing, Joe Pa did the minimum but should've done more back then. Maybe he figured he could've gone to the police but what he said would just be hersay. It's at least something to go on for an investigation.
We don't know the whole story yet and we don't know whether to excuse Joe Pa or to crucify him. But we do know who who to attack first and that is the officials who covered it up and Sandusky himself. I have a feeling that this might be the end for Joe Paterno. If it is, it's perhaps the most shameful one ever.
