This question has gripped the boxing world for the last few years. It comes up again due to the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr's camp has set a date for a new fight (May 5), a place (MGM Grand in Las Vegas), and has said they want the biggest fight possible. The exact quote from Leonard Ellerbe, one of the advisor's to Mayweather, is "We're looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella."
Meanwhile, the Manny Pacquiao camp doesn't seem to be taking this seriously. Bob Arum who is the CEO for Top Rank, a company that promotes Manny Pacquiao among other boxers, has weighed in on this.
"Listen, we're not going to consider anything until after the Marquez fight," Arum said. "The way they are going about it seems like a bizarre way to go about it. If you want to put it together, you meet, you talk. You don't just come out and say, 'The fight is May 5 at the MGM.' What kind of negotiation is that? So I don't take what they said seriously.
"I think it's Floyd's way of trying to grab a little bit of the spotlight away from Manny. I'm not going to get upset. I take it with a grain of salt." (previous two paragraphs taken from an ESPN article)
So is this ultimate fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao finally going to happen? I think eventually this fight will happen but just not on this date. It could happen on this date and at the same place but it just seems like the Pacquiao camp would like to actually have a say in the matter and not just be challenge to a fight at the monkey bars after school. I hope the fight will happen May 5, 2012 but I don't think the Pacquiao camp will go along with it. We will have to see after Pacquiao's fight with Juan Manuel Marquez next weekend.
