Some sad news hit the sports world yesterday as it was announced that Harmon Killebrew, Hall of Fame player for the Twins, died at the age of 74 due to cancer. It was only just last week that Killebrew said he was settling in for the last days of his life. While it is sad to see a baseball legend go, now is a time to celebrate a legendary life.
Harmon Killebrew made his MLB debut for the Washington Senators in 1954. The next few years had Killebrew down in the minor leagues and it was not until 1959 when Killebrew made a name for himself on the Major League level. When the team moved to Minnesota and renamed themselves as the Twins, Killebrew continued to play at his elite level and made himself into a legend. Killebrew and the Twins would get to the 1965 World Series only to lose to the Dodgers in 7 games. Killebrew would get one MVP award in 1969 batting .276 with 49 home runs and 140 RBI's.
Killebrew would finish his career in 1975 having played one season with the Royals, the only time he wasn't with the Twins franchise. His career numbers were solid with 573 home runs (11th all time) and 1584 RBI's.
Killebrew would be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. May you rest in peace, Harmon, as the greatest Twin forever more.
